They take kids to watch the Parliment in action?
What kind of sick country is that?

If it's good enough for Bush, it's good enough for some Aussie senator.

2005-08-11 08:45:26 AM
One finger good.
Two fingers better.

Action Replay Nick: Is Australia turning into baby America? What's up with all the hypersensitivity?

Only the opposition is hypersensitive. Happens on fark too.

He gave "the bird" to the opposition benches in the Senate after the government narrowly won a parliamentary vote, 33 to 31.

I second that hero tag. Sounds like my type of senator...what's the big deal, really? I hate Bush/Cheney, but since I actually support freedom of expression, when video came out of Bush flippin' the bird, and when Cheney told that guy to "go fark yourself," I just laughed and said "oh well." Everyone does that. It just proves they're human (well, Bush is a puppet, but that's beside the point).

St00pidN00b: when video came out of Bush flippin' the bird

I thought that that was a thumbs up. Unless you're talking about the one from back before he was guvna.

Are you implying that I'm hypersensitive? I am appalled! I demand an apology for your slanderous and disgusting remark, sir, for you have deeply offended me.

No no no, i'd never say that. If you are offended I will apologize ... that you are offended.

Ya COMMIE!!!

Pale_Green_Pants_With_Nobody_Inside_Them, I was referring to the governor, "is this thing on?" recording. That and the video of him a little bit tipsy at a wedding make him seem actually somewhat normal.
Do I like his politics? No.
Could I see myself having a couple of drinks with him? Sure, him and Clinton both.
I guess that's part of his appeal to the voters.

You'd have to drink early though. I hear he's asleep by 9:30

I'm quite surprised that this was a National Party senator.

Bob Katter, on the other hand...well, I'd expect friggin' anything from that galah.

2005-08-11 09:15:45 AM
Was that video of Bush giving the finger real? I've only seen animated GIFs of it, which look rather grainy.

2005-08-11 09:16:21 AM
Why does the opposition party hate Australia?

I blame the Australian Bush.

It's an Australian trap!(sapphire)

leperboy69: galah.

Galah? Is that some sort of crazy criminal speak?

Galah? Is that some sort of crazy criminal speak?

Yep. This is a galah, and to call someone by that name (usually prefixed with suitable Australian adjective - eg, "flamin' galah!") has the same intent and meaning as other words such as "ass".

Oh, and it's pronounced "gaH-laH" - rhyming with car.

That'll confuse 'em - Americans don't say 'car', they say 'veee-hickle'. I learned that on World's Scariest Police Chases, so it must be true.

He described it as an "appalling, disgusting, deplorable, affronting and offensive gesture".

Inappropriate, yes, but it's not like he took his wang out.

He described it as an "appalling, disgusting, deplorable, affronting and offensive gesture".

His opponent called this statement a long-winded, profusely redundant, heap of meandering, copious, and verbose thesaurial blathering.

This guy sounds like nothing more than a cheap Pierre Trudeau wannabe - perhaps not the greatest, but certainly the coolest and most entertaining politician Canada ever had.

From Wikipedia:
"In Canada, showing the middle finger is sometimes called the Trudeau salute after Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau because of a famous photo of him giving the finger to protesters. He has also used the gesture in the Canadian House of Commons."

The first incident happened as he was on a train that was moving past a large protest against him.
As the train went by, the protestors were shocked to see the Prime Minister of Canada sitting in the caboose, giving them all the finger with a big smile on his face.

He also caused an international incident by doing a sarcastic pirouette behind the Queen's back at a formal dinner, hung out with John and Yoko and more than likely smoked dope with them, dated Barbara Streisand before marrying a hot university student half his age while in office, and then nearly lost her after she had an affair with Mick Jagger.
He also often wore sandals in Parliament, and frequently swore in there as well.

The Queen incident

Goofing off

Despite all of this misbehavior, or maybe because of it, he managed to serve 16 years as Canada's Prime Minister.
We need more politicians like him!

2005-08-11 02:44:49 PM
Wow, no pics of bush and his 1 finger(thumb, whatever) salute to the press yet.

2005-08-11 02:45:59 PM
sens: and frequently swore in there as well.

It wasn't swearing! 'twas "Fuddle Duddle".

Ask any of his friends: He said it all the time. I don't see where the controversy is.

2005-08-11 02:46:30 PM
LOL.. I hadn't heard of the Queen thing before. That's hilarious.

Yeah, we could do with another irreverent politician.

2005-08-11 02:46:42 PM
Wake me up when politicians get truly in touch with the populace at large they represent. By this, i mean when they start throwing up the Shocker or Hardcore sign. Yawn.

2005-08-11 02:48:08 PM
From this abc.net.au news story, it looks like it's not even the middle finger:

What gives?

2005-08-11 02:48:48 PM
You know, if someone pissed me off enough for me to hang the bird I wouldn't be apologizing for it.

Further if they demanded an apology I'd do it again, and add the comment "Suck it!"

I don't think I'll be running for office soon.

2005-08-11 02:49:21 PM
The guy lacked the courage of his convictions and said he was sorry later. If he would have told them to fark off then he'd be a hero. Since he caved in and said he regrets his actions doesn't that make him a dumbass?

2005-08-11 02:49:43 PM
Pale_Green_Pants_With_Nobody_Inside_Them: You'd have to drink early though. I hear he's asleep by 9:30

That's when Cheney tucks him in and has to go to the shop for a battery replacement and tune-up.

Australians Rule. They are all badass pirates who wrestle kangaroos.

2005-08-11 02:51:34 PM
since this is austrailia, i thought it wasn't a big deal since their symbol is 2 fingers in a v (like our peace sign).

That goes back to the days when archers were the big deal in warfare and showing your two fingers said you'd come back and shoot at them some more.

2005-08-11 02:51:35 PM
Denise R Sharpe: What gives?

Sounds like the writer of the article has a sense of humor.

For farks sake, it's a good thing he didn't moon them!

Lighten up people...

maybe he has 7 fingers...

He described it as an "appalling, disgusting, deplorable, affronting and offensive gesture".

Oh Good Lord! And America gets shiat for being prudes. What is the deal with Australia?

Like when Douglas who was taken hostage in Iraq. He saw them murder his fellow captors. He later called them assholes and Andrew Jaspan had the nerve to scold him for that.
