Israel is not stupid enough to kill a British citizen for spray-painting a wall.

If you want to use the Rachel Corrie incident as a counterexample, that crazy biatch jumped under the bulldozer. Israel isn't stupid enough to kill an American citizen either.

Ah, civil disobedience during armed conflict ... the perfect crime.

"At least I'm not blowing up buses!"

I should use that next time I get pulled over for speeding.

Hey, that's pretty good. If he's trying his hand at off-beat political messages, though, I really wish he'd be a bit more even-handed. As is, it looks like he's playing the "Israeli Wall = Berlin Wall" schtick without acknowledging the Palestinian support for terror attacks that led to the wall in the first place (which is meant to keep people OUT, not IN, I might add). Which kinda sucks cuz he is a good artist.

2005-08-06 05:15:25 AM
The wall painting was cool, and the sneaking stuff into museums kinda cute. but going through his website, i see this... he VANDALIZED historical paintings? for this i think he's a dick.

Banksy da man. I like how he describes himself as "not-quite-polemical," when anybody with two brain cells can see that he clearly is. At least someone is questioning the Israelis -- and quite artfully at that.

Ever since I heard they put up that wall, I've wanted to go and spray "Part of a Theid" on it.

2005-08-06 05:19:25 AM
i heart banksy even more.

2005-08-06 05:20:22 AM
Ok, Devil's Advocate.

I like what he's doing, but there's a couple of them that shows the other side as some kind of paradise..

To the Palestine locals, isn't this offensive rather than witty and clever?

As his website includes:

Old man: You paint the wall, you make it look beautiful.

Me (Banksy): Thanks

Old man: We don't want it to be beautiful, we hate this
wall, go home.

---

I'm with the old man on this.

Remember the Tom Green skit where he sneaks a painting into an art exhibit, and then later start drawing on it with markers in front of patrons?

I hardly think the guy VANDALISED a piece of work that was already there.

Dont you think it more likely that he got a print, made his enhancements, framed it, then hung it on an empty wall?

The paintings he painted over were not originally in the museum. He came across them by other means, did his own painting, and then put them on to museum walls. I don't know where he got the ones he painted upon, but they weren't priceless museum pieces.

I've always been of the opinion that well done graffiti makes a city look much cooler. Plus, it's a democratic way of spreading messages which is pretty neat. I mean, you'll never see a billboard that reads, "Billboards make our city a terrible place," even if some people believe it.

2005-08-06 05:48:25 AM
Awesome. I love checking out Banksy's art.

ctyt: Israel is not stupid enough to kill a British citizen for spray-painting a wall.

Nah, but they killed a British Journalist holding a camera.

Secretive "guerrilla" artist Banksy has decorated Israel's controversial West Bank barrier with satirical images of life on the other side.

Because nothings spells edgy comedy like teenaged corpses in a blown-out Sbarro's

Right on, zerkalo.

I notice none of Banksy's images of life on the Israeli side of the wall show buses getting blown up.

guerilla?

ctyt: If you want to use the Rachel Corrie incident as a counterexample, that crazy biatch jumped under the bulldozer.

No, she tried to walk on the pile of dirt the dozer was pushing, lost her footing, and was run over. Then backed UP over.
Moral? Stay the fark home and myob.

/The "crazy biatch" comment was right on the money though.

VideoVader:

As is, it looks like he's playing the "Israeli Wall = Berlin Wall" schtick without acknowledging the Palestinian support for terror attacks that led to the wall in the first place (which is meant to keep people OUT, not IN, I might add).

The proposals for the wall have been bouncing around since long before the second intifada. The threat of terrorism is, unfortunately, nothing more than a thinly-veiled excuse for a land-grab. If it were simply about security then it would be tragic but understandable. It never has been about security though.

The wall has been run right through the middle of Palestinian neighbourhoods and down the centre of streets and is being used to enlarge the de facto borders of Israel. Shopping boulevards which were once an integral part of the local economies have been seriously harmed by the wall.

This is despite the Israeli courts having also ruled, on a number of occasions, that the wall should be re-routed if it's purpose is truly about security and not about inflicting socio-economic harm on Palestinians or as a simple land-grab.

As further evidence of the actual purpose of the wall, it has been used to cut Palestinian farmers off from their land which the Israeli government then seized under existing laws, without any form of compensation, on the grounds that it wasn't being put to 'proper use' and moved to hand the land over to Israeli Jews. This behaviour only stopped when the Israeli courts condemned it.

The wall is also being used to make absolute Israel's hold on East Jerusalem.

So yes, the wall is about keeping people out but it largely seems to be about keeping Palestinians out of Palestinian areas...
