It is a terrible thing that happened and my condolences go out to the loved ones of those killed. But reading this thread I am amazed at the viciousness of how everyone is acting. It is amazing that just yesterday Canadians and Americans were agreeing and getting along on Fark, but today there is a whole nother aura in the comments. Both countries are equally great and beautiful. Accidents happen, and no I am not insinuating that this one should be handled lightly, but shouldn't we at least show respect for each other's country? Show respect for those killed, not act like children over who's country is better!

What a bad thread to get into American victim mentality.

Now, now... soldiers have been needlessly killed so that we all can post our crap freely...

...let's all bow our heads for our fallen brothers of the 51st State.

I hope the DND does screw the families around with compensation, insurance etc.

on a side note: I just saw a military person from DND in Edmonton talking to some reporters on TV(I think it Edmonton, I can't get a good view of the TV form my office) and its snowing, man here in TO its about 27-28 and you need sunscreen.

No comment. Lest I lose royalties.

Leonard- luckily we have been spared the snow in Calgary, Edmonton however is less fortunate... I'm going to Montreal in a couple of weeks, I'm sure by then it will be snowing there too these systems always have a way of moving west-east

Leonard_Cohen :Your lack of culture doesn't betray your words, past or present.

Leonard, here's some "culture" for you while you ponder your country's continued tendency to emulate every aspect of American culture: bite me. That's an insult, by the way, but based on the fact that your Canadian, your culture won't be plagiarizing such American slang for another 2 years or so.

And that's a nice picture of Married With Children's Al Bundie's next door neighbor (Steve) wearing a Miami Vice leisure suit. Beats the crap out of my smoking monkey picture in subtle hilarity.

The fact that you use a TV show (and a bad one at that) to prove your "point" further proves my point original post:
Your lack of culture doesn't betray your words, past or present.

I want that pilot to be impaled on a pole and his farking balls cut off!

hmm wonder if this will work.. It is sad but at the same time we do seem to do this semi regularly... Maybe its jsut to reaffirm that YES WE ARE HERE?? Condolences to the families but it is a part of war...

Sex0r: Two things - the media is constantly getting news facts on this. Also, the article says "apparently". That's hardly concrete. Who cares though, someones ass should be in a sling for this regardless.

I read about 1/2 these posts and wondered why no one pointed out the obvious:

The US pilot was flying a night mission and reported ground fire. He didn't know it was a Canadian patrol below, all he could see were tracer rounds flying past him.

Which begs the question, did the Candian patrol think it was a Taliban F-16 flying over them?

Quit talking sense. There is America-bashing to be done!

2002-04-18 04:04:56 PM
GMiscue:

He didn't see tracers flying around him. He saw muzzle flashes on the ground below from the Canadian soldiers shooting at targets. For all he knew, those could have been American soldiers firing at Taliban fighters -- unfortunately for the dead Canadians, it was them. I think it all boils down to a jumpy reservist pilot with an itchy trigger finger. We're not playing with Lego here, gentlemen, let's err on the side of caution before dropping 500 pounds of explosive death on unidentified human beings.

2002-04-18 04:09:09 PM
I knew this was coming... I mean it's hard to go anywhere these days without finding Americans who have hidden feelings of resentment towards Canada. And I mean... I understand... there is so much there to envy...

Seriously though, these are military men. They joined up of their own volition. People die due to accident/friendly fire in wars all the time. So while it sucks, its something that they accepted might happen to them when they joined up.

all he could see were tracer rounds flying past him.

This is completely false.

2002-04-18 04:14:15 PM
Mike_P:

Friendly fire deaths are not acceptable -- the real tragedy is that it happens often enough that it has become acceptable in the eye of the public. Even In the days of carpet bombing and inaccurate artillery barages, friendly fire deaths were expected but not accepted. There is no reason you should kill your own troops or the troops of allies in the 21st century. It always boils down to human error, be it someone not following orders, bad communication or insufficient training.

People die in war, but it shouldn't be from a bullet in the back.

Um...I wasn't using that to prove any point, just to make an observation for the purposes of testing your response. I'm an asshole like that, but I'm just so farking full of culture that the pain leads me to such actions. Your mis-considered response indicates that you're a little off base now. Take your time to re-collect your thoughts and take another stab at it.

Were they flying past him, though? Or did he just see muzzle flashes on the ground? I doubt the Canadian's would be so stupid as to fire towards a fighter jet when the only fighters around are allied.

I'll pass, but I will leave work now and head over to the butcher shop and pick up a couple steaks and grill them outside tonight.

Faust: What the hell is this "horse's axis?" is that suppose to be some kind of witty name for Bush? Oh man thats farkin hilarious. My side is literally splitting open. You see cause its suppose to be horse's ass, but they have gone an made it Horse's AXIS. Oh shiat no wonder everyone thinks Canadians are so smart.

Perhaps an explanation of the joke would help. Yes it'll ruin my little in-joke, but you just don't get it. Mr. Dubya named the countries in his imaginary "Axis of Evil". A day later, an editorial cartoon by the very talented Bruce McKinnon came out. On the left, a drawing of all the countires in this "Axis of Evil". On the right, a picture of Bush labeled, "Horse's Axis".

And I think this pretzel choking, gun toting, geography challenged half-wit fits the name perfectly. His father was popular during the gulf war only to fark up and lose to Clinton in 1992. Clinton, Bush Sr., Reagan, they were all COMPETENT presidents. Dubya is just an ignorant hick.

And that's my 2 canadian cents worth

All I have to say is... next time planes crash into buildings down there in the US... I say we just give you the finger and say ask Mexico to use their airports. I know all americans aren't assholes like a certain few here, but damn... they make it hard as hell to farkin like you people.

2002-04-18 04:52:23 PM
Since we are talking about GWB, I thought I would throw in my 2 American cents. Chick is right GWB is a hick. He maybe the smartest man alive, right, but he comes off as a farmer from Texas who does not articulate his words. Now I demand more from my leaders then simply a famous father. Clinton may be a sex freak but at least he can speak in complete sentences and he worked his way to the top from almost the bottom. Why is it that US presidents do not speak multiple languages? I just want a president that is smart, well read, multilingual, articulate, and fair. For the US being the only superpower in the world you would think we could find someone half decent. Maybe they are all to smart to take the job.....

That is not what I meant to post! The image was that "This man is your friend, Canadian, he fights for freedom:" WW2 poster.

Apologies to all!

GMiscue The US pilot was flying a night mission and reported ground fire. He didn't know it was a Canadian patrol below, all he could see were tracer rounds flying past him.

The US pilot was flying a night mission over a designated live fire training area Which part of designated training area do you not understand ?? The bit about it be officially designated, the bit about it being a live fire training area ?

Designated: You've been told it's there - it's on your map

live fire: The people in the designated are will be firing live rounds - including tracers

Training area - The people in the designated area firing live fire are training.

Now do you understand you farking moron.

Um. No. He recieved permission to MARK the target, not drop a farking bomb on an allied training camp. Farking reservists and guardsmen are not professional soldiers. Use them to fly cargo, guard airports, whatever.

Up to you, but a lot of us listen to american music. Horrible crap? If you say so.

2002-04-18 05:48:17 PM
congratulations USA!

taliban: 0 USA: a whole bunch more

seems like they are finding it easier to kill friendly troops then the enemy. this should be interesting to see why this actually happend. from what i have heard on the news is that the canadians were actually in a "safe zone" designated for ground pratice.

2002-04-18 05:55:10 PM
Live fire training zone = no fly zone!

The pilot's career is over. His handler's career is over. And that is the way it should be. They can fark'n well fall on their swords now; and should.

I got about an 8th of the way down this comments section, maybe 30 comments or so, before I got so fockin fed up with the the absolute bullcrap some of you guys are posting.

Holy Christ, do you people KNOW how insensitive you are being? I am not, (which should be obvious) getting mad at you farkers who thankfully have a bit of decency and post condolence messages--but stuff like "getting blown to bits" even though it was in a condolence message...holy crap, can you imagine if you were a relative of one of those soldiers, and you read that? Can you even IMAGINE how bad that would make you feel?

These people are dead. Imagine one of your acquaintances in the armed forces, hopefully it's a family member, and imagine him killed by friendly fire. No, *imagine it* Don't just dismiss it. There are people out there who are going to be crying for a LONG time because of this, and some of you freaking idiots have the *gall* to joke about it? Who the fark taught you about decency and timing?

I don't even know how to *say* how disgusted I am with some of this tripe. Grow a sense of decency and mutual respect for your fellow human beings.

2002-04-18 06:29:45 PM
Chick3_16, I Have that Horse's axis cartoon around here somewhere, I'll see if I can post it. Hehe the only reason I even read the paper is for his cartoons.

BTW, I thought I was the only Farker from the area (from Sackville myself), now I see there is someone who goes to the same school. Quite the coincidence.

2002-04-18 06:39:03 PM
Wow,
First let me say that the comments here today make me sick. Some of you Farkers are ignorant farks, I'm talking both Canadians and Americans. Grow up.
These were the first Canadians to be killed in a combat-zone since Korea, and I think thats something to be proud of. We are not a military people, but we should honour those who fight that the world will be a safe place.
Thanks PPCLI, MAPLE LEAF FOREVER.

Just curious, how the hell do you post THAT picture by accident. Did you just have it laying around on the pasteboard?

2002-04-18 06:49:05 PM
Took me a long time to read all these posts. I had never imagined that there were this many assholes on Fark. What an utter disappointment to the human race.

After reading what I posted, I'll change that from "this many" to "so many".

Hear, hear!
I agree with Caen1944. And I'm an American.
It was an accident. It was tragic and stupid. Can we all stop the flag waving and pissing contests and deal with it maturely? Thank ya!

I think i've figured it out: Vanhfan is Harmonia's evil split-personality. Same likes, same dislikes; just alot more pissy about it.

Sex0r: According to current news, the pilot did NOT have permission to bomb, but rather he decided to anyway (apparently an action they are allowed to do if they feel they are in personal immediate danger).

Usually I read these threads and just let these things fly but this time I'm sorry. There is no other way to describe some of you people than completely sad tosser_s. why there aren't more decent americans on this board trying to restore some dignity is beyond me. its stageering how after your shiat for brains soldiers go and kill four canadians you lot just come on here and take the piss about it. you're miserable excuses for human beings man, no wonder so many peeps have a beef with the US

At the end of today, regardless of what was said in this thread, four soldiers, four Canadians are still dead. Regardless of what Canadians or Americans or anyone may have written in here, I would like to believe that everyone is truly saddened by this, as everyone should be saddened by tragic accidental deaths, regardless of who they happen to, or when. Once again (as I said so many comments above this) I appreciate the sensitive condolences passed on by many of you to Canada. For those who had nothing good to say: I must say you've given my faith in humanity a good jostling, and it may take me a while to get it in order.

Tonight, a nation mourns.
