Being a fairly new homeowner I say that if it's an eye sore then take it down.
As a hardcore Sesame St fan I say "Fark 'Em!"
\confused

2005-08-03 12:35:29 PM
Yep, back on July 20th, the owner was ordered to take it down within 2 weeks. Today would be two weeks. Wasn't this already greenlit 3 weeks ago?

2005-08-03 12:37:17 PM
Jeezuz - some people REALLY need to get a life. With all the shiat happening in the world, how does taking down this thing REALLY help anybody?

Live and let live morans.

2005-08-03 12:37:31 PM
Heh - they're giving their neighborhood the bird.

2005-08-03 12:37:31 PM
Take down the bird... and in it's place, add a giagantic Snufflufagus with breasts.

"You said you wanted me to take down the bird..."

2005-08-03 12:38:27 PM
This would piss me off too; Big Bird is yellow.

Tanthalas39: This would piss me off too; Big Bird is yellow.

That's exactly what I was gonna say. If you're gonna put up a statue of Big Bird, at least get the color right, dammit.

2005-08-03 12:46:53 PM
the bird diminished the historic integrity of the community

Well, you know what your next move is, don't you, man.

2005-08-03 12:47:36 PM
That is one crappy looking statue. It's not even the right color. The article says the guy's kids made it. Are they retarded or something?

2005-08-03 12:48:13 PM
The street it's on is called Bluebird Court.

2005-08-03 12:50:55 PM
... ahhh historic Blue Bird Court.

/You walk there, and you just feel the history

Hmmmm, I reckon your expectations of the arts & craft skills of children are a little lofty.

Mind you, you're correct, it's damn crappy looking. I can see why they want it down - can you imagine living across the road from this and having it staring in your window 24-7?

Hello leperboy69, I'm watching you. Sleep easy leperboy69, I'll come and fark you in the arse one day.

Ah, America, land of the free...

The neighbors have a right to complain if they are negatively affected, in this case if the bird is ugly enough to lower their property values.

No buyer is going to say, "I love this house, but I'm offering $5k less because of that thing out there on your neighbor's house."

The neighbors are imposing their collective opinion on a homeowner without just cause via the government.

Property ownership is a myth.

2005-08-03 02:23:45 PM
sure, its a stupid looking bird, but so what? anyone who cares enough about something like this to go and complain to "The Village's Historic Preservation Board" needs a good swift kick in the nads.

2005-08-03 02:33:09 PM
I'm going to go find myself a bird, just to piss off the neighbours.

2005-08-03 03:12:41 PM
Wasn't he blue in "Follow that bird"?

His neighbours need to make a snuffleupagus statue and pretend they can't see it.

AgentKGB

I loved that movie.

And Snuffy was the best character on the show.

ArkAngel: And Snuffy was the best character on the show.

I was watching this with my nephew the other day, Snuffy is now seen by everyone, when did this happen? When I was a kid only Big Bird saw him.

2005-08-03 04:44:58 PM
"However, the statute is once again perched on top of some scaffolding at roof level, holding an American flag and in plain view for the neighbors to see."

I wondered when the government would get around to adopting a Blue Big Bird statute.

2005-08-03 04:45:42 PM
The rumor I have heard about the "outing" of Snuffy was due to the fact that they were worried about kids having "secret friends" as in "secret molesting friends" and wanted everything on the up and up.

I don't know if that's a real reason though or not.

2005-08-03 04:46:34 PM
Big Bird yellow. Cookie Monster blue.

/COOKIE!

I swear that we are starting to need a "Wisconsin" tag.

2005-08-03 04:47:33 PM
i've heard of blue balls...

shouldn't that be called a blue bird.

blue birds don't look like big bird.

this artist is colorblind & not talented.

2005-08-03 04:48:18 PM
It may seem crazy, but I'm under the belief that the First Amendment should be protecting this guy's right to hoist Big Bird onto his house. Too bad your neighborhood alliances and the like don't seem to agree with that idea.

2005-08-03 04:48:49 PM
Tom_Slick I don't remember exactly when, but I was watching the day it happened, and it really broke my heart. I haven't been able to look at the show the same way since. The beauty of the bit was Snuffy's existential ambiguity. Yet, whether or not he "really" existed, he was clearly concrete in Big Bird's mind, thus creating a powerful message about the limitations of perception and even the nature of reality itself. To see such a can-of-metaphysical-worms flung open on a show ostensibly for children was both bold and revolutionary. Or at least that's what I thought at the time, but give me a break; I was just a kid.

2005-08-03 04:50:41 PM
It is not an easy matter to decide where to draw the line between the wishes of a local community and the rights of the individual.

On one hand, let the guy do what he wants on his property.

On the other hand, is he or is he not a member of that community?

Obviously, if this happened in NYC, it wouldn't even have been an issue. Some neighbor would have pushed, pulled or blown it off his roof weeks ago. BOOM! No more problem!

2005-08-03 04:52:48 PM
Wasn't Big Bird blue in one if his movies?

2005-08-03 04:52:55 PM
I swear, I never ever in my life did I ever think my home town would show up on Fark, but lo and behold here it is. I have yet to visit the bird on Blue Bird lane seeing that I don't visit the B section much. Yes, the fun Greendaleisms you find living here, all streets arranged in sections of a particular letter. In the M myself. Though, I'm surprised the large stucko flower ascending a chimney in the A section didn't piss anyone off.

/people who live here are crazy
//stupid "historical" society
///doesn't like the bird

2005-08-03 04:53:01 PM
At least it wasn't a big shiney blue orb... anyone remember those?

2005-08-03 04:53:30 PM
Oh, Fark angry neighbors and their property values. People are such assholes.

...I still don't get the blue thing though. Maybe they thought it went better with the flag.

2005-08-03 04:54:10 PM
ArkAngel: And Snuffy was the best character on the show.

Didn't it eventually come to be that people could see him and he ceased to be Big Bird's "imaginary" friend and became just a regular character, or have I been hitting the glue too hard again? If Sesame Street jumped the shark, it would be that moment if indeed it exists.

Tom_Slick

I vaguely remember an episode where they 'outed' Snuffy. Everyone damn near soiled their trousers. Too bad Mister Hooper didn't last long enough to see him.

Snuffy is now seen by everyone, when did this happen? When I was a kid only Big Bird saw him.

Yeah I remember that too, that was the whole joke... that something as big as Mr. Snuffalupagas could be unseen made it like Hobbes being a stuffed tiger when anyone but Calvin was around.

He's been public knowledge for quite a few years now, I gather. The following link details his history and how the other residents of Sesame Street actually had an intervention with Big Bird:

The adults have been driven to the brink after another incident gone wrong, and give Big Bird an ultimatum: tell this "Mr. Snuffleupagus" good-bye once and for all, or else. Out of options and excuses, Big Bird and Snuffy tearfully say their good-byes in Big Bird's nest area. One of Snuffy's tears falls onto Big Bird while they embrace, leading Big Bird to realize that if he can even feel the water from the tears, Snuffy must be real. While the two are embracing, the adults enter the room and see that Snuffy is definitely real. After Snuffy introduces himself, Big Bird does an "I told you so" routine, prompting the adults to apologize profusely.

Mighty fine home he has in that "historic neighborhood," I mean, if by "historic" you merely mean "existed prior to now... now... now..."

I mean, honestly:

IMHO, that house is distracting from the historic significance and excellent construction quality of that Big Bird.

durty_nacho Wasn't Big Bird blue in one if his movies?

Wasn't your question answered earlier in this thread?

The neighbors have a right to complain if they are negatively affected, in this case if the bird is ugly enough to lower their property values.

Actually, what will happen is people will avoid purchasing a nearby house altogether. Property values are a big deal, and the way your neighbor's house looks means everything. That's why people zone against, or create HOA's to protect against, things like parking on front lawns and giant blue birds.

If you want to express yourself with such an overt display, move out to the rural areas.

/grew up in a rural area
//now in the process of buying a home. won't move in next to trashy people for this very reason

Kerslando, I also heard that. It's kinda sad, but it's another example of how kids grow up too fast these days...no one can have an imagination because someone will think something's wrong with them.

2005-08-03 05:05:51 PM
I also seem to remember reading this about 2 weeks ago...WHEN IT WAS GREEN LIT THE FIRST TIME!

If there's a paid position available for making sure regular Fark articles aren't repeats, I'll take it.

Its on bluebird Ct. I am scanning their neighborhood for a
Hooker St., so I can buy a house there.

2005-08-03 05:07:00 PM
Oh, you don't like my bird? Ok I'll take it down. I don't like your house. But I can solve the problem with this lighter fluid and free book of matches I found...

2005-08-03 05:07:28 PM
It's blue, I believe, because the street is called Bluebird. I've actually been to Greendale, and the historical value is that all the houses look like suburban tract houses from the 1950s. Very kitschy; a throwback to a simpler time when housing was cheap and ugly, and Communists were being rounded up just for fun.

So none of these neighbors have anything in their yards that's not historic?

No basketball hoop above the garage?

No gnomes in the garden?

No pink flamingos?

No sprinkler that looks like a tractor?

The neighbors have a right to complain if they are negatively affected, in this case if the bird is ugly enough to lower their property values.

Property value only matters if you plan on moving. So tell me why I should modify my property according to the preferences of people who aren't going to be staying in the neighborhood? Hey, if I plan to live in the same house all my life I'm going to WANT lower property values. Lower values, less property tax.

Yes, when I go looking for a house, I'm certainly going to care if potential neighbor has a yard full of junk. But I'm not going to care if a neighbor has a statue of a blue bird.

I'd be more bothered by a neighbor with wind chimes.
