ggargett: Sweet video of the tail breaking off on CBC

2005-08-02 06:56:58 PM
It's OK. Nobody croaked.

"It can only be attributable to human error."

Plane landed ok, then ran off the runway?

There was a report that the lights went out. Perhaps the computer controlled landing failed, and the pilot did not react fast enough to engage reverse thrust before running off the runway.

esteban9, killerjetski,

While the skin of a passenger plane may indeed act as a faraday cage, this has nothing to do with lightning strikes. You're confusing an electrical discharge with electromagnetic radiation (i.e. radio waves).

Lightning can certainly damage the electrical systems of an aircraft should a strike take place. Modern aircraft are pretty well insulated against such damage, but nothing's 100%.

A quick google search gives us this link.
2005-08-02 07:01:05 PM
oh god i have a friend working there in air traffic control.. i hope they weren't working on this flights landing...
2005-08-02 07:02:07 PM
EVERYONE SURVIVES! ....except the plane :(
2005-08-02 07:02:23 PM
Isn't this the same country that gave us the worlds biggest glider?
2005-08-02 07:03:53 PM

No linky. On TV.

It's just close-up video of the post-wreck fire when the tail broke off and clunked to the ground. Not like the tail came off beforehand. That wouldn't be sweet at all.
2005-08-02 07:04:53 PM
Flippin' sweet! Latest news says no deaths. Best news I've heard all day. Looks like the evac equipment/plans actually work.

/just dropped doughnut
//rolled back to get it
///of course, I rolled over it

This is a hit for

[image from too old to be available]

Please DO NOT fly on any major airline in the next 3-4 weeks if at all possible. There is going to be a plane crash, but at this time I do have any more detail. When I do, I will post them in the Latest Update Section.

I checked my archives of his site and this was there before today.

now that we know everyone's alright...

dead baby jokes anyone?
2005-08-02 07:07:55 PM
Nobody died?!?

Guess the news channels are going to forget about it now...
2005-08-02 07:09:50 PM
God loves the French

That makes one of us
2005-08-02 07:10:22 PM
Brian also has this on the "latest" page but I don't know if it was there before the crash.

Has micro-burst been cited as the cause?

August 2nd, 11:30 am EST USA

[image from too old to be available]

Something to do with a Micro Burst? a fire and people being killed.
2005-08-02 07:13:05 PM
252+ souls and 12 crew, looks like most or all made is out on the deployed chutes, 14 injured? Nice job flight crew. Hope the Pilot remembered to set the air brake, looks like they weren't deployed on the 1 wing shot I could see & wind shear probbably made him pancake it pretty hard. Good luck guys. Buzz.

All 309 survive fiery crash landing

2005-08-02 07:16:44 PM
Good news everybody is safe.

/Note to self: think about reading the safety card next time in case of emergency evacuation
2005-08-02 07:18:48 PM

A faraday cage can/does protect against lightning just as it does with EMI. Get your facts straight.

Yes, because if I weren't a "noob", I would not be bothered by shockingly unclever, appallingly ill-timed attempts at humor displayed in this thread.

I like jokes. I don't like jokes about people being
trapped in gasoline-soaked aluminum tombs.

What a drama queen!

kudos to the crew and rescue efforts

truly lucky/miraculous

/hope i die peacefully in my sleep like my father and not screaming and yelling like all of his passengers

2005-08-02 07:25:39 PM
that would be a KEROSENE (jet-A) soaked aluminum tomb.
2005-08-02 07:28:07 PM
I'm glad even our plane crashes are boring.
2005-08-02 07:28:30 PM
Wow that's so awesome everyone survived.

I can just imagine in news rooms across the US, "What?? everyone survived? Aw, gawdamnit, there goes the story!"

/It's okay to do this, cause no one died
//Don't know if it will show up properly
2005-08-02 07:28:58 PM
Heh. Guess I now know who some of the people were I pretended not to understand in Paris.

I'm glad most everyone got out safely.
2005-08-02 07:29:09 PM
I was at the airport when this happened. The bullspit helpful announcements are still just blaming the weather for all the cancellations. Yeah, that an the burning fuselage at the end of the runway. Airport staff are using the "there was an incident with an Air France plane". Ever wonder why most airports don't have TVs? Too informative in a situation like this. I spent 45 minutes on hold with Air Canada's reservations desk, before giving up and deciding to head home. Would have been at least an hour's wait for a cab/limo if I hadn't run up to the departures level and grabbed a limo that just dropped off some sucker who's gonna still be there!
2005-08-02 07:31:15 PM
Awesome. Good thing it wasn't a Boeing, or everyone would've been fried to a crisp.
2005-08-02 07:31:41 PM
If I was ever on a plane that crashed, no FARKers would know about it, because no one I know knows who I am on FARK.

That would be sad.

I would hope that the news links on the crash I died in made it to greenlight status and some jokes were told about it. I think I would like that. FARKers could look at photos of the burning wreck and parts of my former body would make up the smoke they'd see. They wouldn't know they were looking at the smoke of a former FARKer, but they would be.

So to any FARKers who were on this plane and died in the crash, my hat is off to you. May you rest in peace.
2005-08-02 07:32:10 PM
Canadians are always trying to be like Americans. Now they have mastered our art of crashing planes.
2005-08-02 07:33:06 PM
Think for a second before you start about "humour". Regardless of whether you're a farking asshole or just making light jokes to relieve stress, don't complain if others laugh or make jokes when someone who you know is in danger/dies/died.

You could see an endless array of people talking about how "muslims" laughed after 9/11, but they're ones who're first to laugh and joke when it's happening to someone else.

There's a fine line between having a humour sense and being insensitive. If you don't know that, there's no point in talking to you any further.

Obscene_CNN: spiralscratch,

Ah, fark. I was reminded of this property by another link shortly after I posted. Guess it's been a while since studying this stuff, and I'm accustomed to seeing faraday cages in regards to inhibiting radio.

/mea culpa
2005-08-02 07:37:28 PM
First reaction: they all survived. Awesome.

Second reaction: Now that they all survived, I'm damn glad my plane landed with enough time to get me home and asleep before all this shiat happened.

Didn't gamble in Vegas, but I'm still feeling lucky.
2005-08-02 07:37:38 PM
So an Air France jet that is flying into Canada (full of Canadians and Frenchmen) crashes, and none of them lose their lives?

John Gibson must be furious.
2005-08-02 07:38:27 PM

I'm tired people saying "Miracle" on TV. It's not a miracle motherfarkers, it's GOOD design by the engineers who worked on the plane, and have built on decades of aviation experience and past tragedy.

...And luck.

But a "miracle" it's not.

2005-08-02 07:40:03 PM
No, there's no echo in here.
I tried to comment an hour ago when Fark was all farked, but I didn't think it'd gone through.
But the thread involved Canada, and I always feel the need to put my two cents in, so I came in and retyped it. Now that I've read the thread far enough down, I see that it worked after all.

And no, I don't care that no one else cares about this.
2005-08-02 07:40:10 PM
This is not a news flash. Its an unfortunate event, but accidents do happen. There are many more things happening right now than this that should be concidered news flashes.

Nobody cares about your opinion.

A big jetliner crashing into flames IS a News Flash. Name another current major breaking story. Twit.

JihadJoe - So an Air France jet that is flying into Canada (full of Canadians and Frenchmen) crashes, and none of them lose their lives?

Hey, man. If there's one thing the French are good at, it's running like hell at the first sign of trouble. Looks like that skill saved them all this time around.
2005-08-02 07:44:12 PM
I don't like this terrorism.
2005-08-02 07:45:24 PM
I got a riddle for you, Hank. Okay. A plane crashes at Pearson Airport in Toronto. Do one dies. Where do they bury the survivors?
[image from too old to be available]
/extremely appropriate Canadian joke
2005-08-02 07:46:22 PM
Why do things like this draw so much attention? Because people like to see shiat get destroyed. Nobody cares about the progress society makes, only when something goes wrong.

Not necessarily, I love watching controlled demolitions. shiat gets destroyed because something went right.

Hummmm, It does not look like an airplane to me.
I bet it's a missile that the military shot at the freeway.

Glad to see that Canada screwed up a deadly plane crash.

/did I write that correctly?
