Please come to Boston and toast a few pedestrians for me. Pedestrians: that red thing you're ignoring means "don't cross now."

He says he has to replace a broken front passenger window. But the bulletproof glass costs more than $14,000.

Wow, I hope that Sarge knows how lucky he is. He'll end up making more off that car than he will off of his whole ToD in Iraq.

That car should fetch well over $100,000 depending on the amount of due dilligence he can do with Mercedes to prove that it was sold to the high ranking officials in his state department.

Hitler's dusenberg sold for well north of a million dollars recently in a private sale.

I've seen one of "Hitler's cars." It's on display at THE THING?, which is a bizarre roadside attraction off the highway somewhere in AZ. Anyone else seen THE THING?

And no, I'm not telling what THE THING? is.

2005-08-02 09:25:36 PM
Somehow I doubt Saddam will see any of that money.

2005-08-02 09:28:57 PM
Wonder if he has to register those flamethrowers with ATF.

2005-08-02 09:30:37 PM

the lighter side of international sweep and clear machinery; the burning and swaddling of pedestrians?

not to sound like some sort of green peace nazi, but getting a deal like that in a country you occupy sounds alot like profiteering or pillaging to me.

/not that there's anything wrong with that

I hope he's planning on painting some flames on the sides of the car since that'll make it go fast too.

Saddam did a lot of driving around Johannesburg? WTF?

If he was such a scary dictator, why was he afraid of carjackers!!!!

Things are very cheap in Iraq. $5000 is a small fortune for whichever Iraqi sold this guy the car. Besides, it originally belonged to Saddam Hussein, you can't very well give it back.

isn't 14k a bit high for a simple glass. bmw 7 series cars with bullet proof glass are relatively common.

I'm assuming it was a 560, which in 88 was the top o' the line mercedes.. this is not the particular car, just a GIS.

2005-08-02 09:46:12 PM
Man I didn't know Saddam was so badass. I can just imagine what he used to dream of....

FriarTuck:

-In all fairness, any Duesenberg in good condition can garner that amount.

-American currency is a better bet than the current Iraqi currency, not to mention the exchange rate and the cost of living for Iraqis.

Teucer: Man I didn't know Saddam was so badass.

I guess you forgot how he gassed and tortured a lot of people.

2005-08-02 09:51:00 PM
Now Saddam had his bad points, but this is a car with STYLE.

2005-08-02 09:52:00 PM
Could this car be classified as a weapon of minor destruction?

2005-08-02 09:52:17 PM
He could have gotten Saddam's chauffer for an extra $500.

2005-08-02 09:55:13 PM
damitjim,

Nope. Flamethrowers aren't firearms and are not regulated by the ATF. I don't think the federal government regulates them at all. Your state laws might ban or restrict them though.

Thanks so much splishsplashfark! been waiting for a reference to M.A.S.K. Now if I could only find the episodes on DVD i'd be all set noastalgically... and indeed this car rocks, but did Saddam need to pay an extra +15 points for the Heavy Flamers?

/One marginalized reference after another!

2005-08-02 10:01:19 PM
ha ha, too bad he won't be able to register it here. i bet the emissions control system won't cut muster with the state he lives in and it will probably cost 2x$5000 to retrofit it with US emissions.

Von Zehle says he did some research on his pimped-up ride and found just three of armored 560 models were sold to the Iraqi government in 1988. He says that means only one thing Saddam.

OR it belonged to either Uday or Qusay.....

Hmmm...

Bullet-throwers = firearms
Flame-throwers = leadarms...?

Think for a minute about the concept of the flamethrower. Because we have them....That means that at some point, some guy said to himself, "Gee, I sure would like to set those people on fire over there -- but I'm way too far away to get the job done. If only I had something that would throw flame on them!"

Do Mercedes factory install flamethrowers these days? Or are they a strictly after market accessory? Maybe they're an AMG tune up fitting running off the exhaust system...

Is petrolhead a British term for 'pyromaniac'?
