Yet people pay more to live in my area of WV than almost anywhere else in the suburban east coast.

I love generalizations. This is no different than greenlighting an article that more than half of current Federal prison inmates are black with a nice Obvious tag.

Not only have all of my teeth, but use them on a girl you're not even worthy of serving fries to. ; ). I am also willing to bet that from your mothers basement, aside from fapping and arguing over Star Trek inconsistencies with fellow witty people such as yourself, you would spend time praying to any listening God you could live in a place like this.

That's only my opinion, I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

The fact is, I want these stereotypes to persist, so pathetic assholes like you can waste other peoples oxygen and leave our state alone.

Do they have flouride in their water? My dad didn't grow up with flouride in his well water and his teeth are awful. Luckily he has good dentists, so they look fine.
The flouride in the water really makes a big difference.

I know, it is definetly smoke time, but I get highly irate with the one-sidedness of Politically Correct humor. Those sitting in this threa laughing up WV or Mass (I never thought of that, you guys do have your own stereotype to deal with) would be offended if the headline read 'Blacks' instead of 'West Virginians'.

Such is the mind of sheep in a herd.

I'm from Mississippi. My state gets made fun of a good bit. Most of the stereotypes are funny and I laugh at them...

Anyway, let's see the percentages by economic status rather than location/race/sex, etc.

Since your profile says DC, I'll assume you live near Charles Town WV. Even you will have to admit that is a signifigently nicer section of WV than the rest of it (probably because it is way off on the edge of the state).

I have lived in rural WV and TN and now live in a urban area. While WV is unfairly singled out it certainly does have more than its fair share of backwoods yokals. I actually can feel myself getting less intellgent when I visit area I used to live. I feel unclean.

I actually work three moiles from Charles Town right now. Martinsburg, Charles Town - the whole area of 500,000 dollar homes - yet people perpetuate this myth about the state. I lived in Charleston, went to school at Marshall in Huntington, nicest people in the world and I seldom met someone missing teeth, let alone most of them.

There are sectors of this state that are bad off (Mingo County for example) but that could be said for any state in the nation. I think WV, Kentucky and TN are just easy targets for the rest of the country. The last breed of people that it is still OK to make fun of, when in fact, Appalachian people are by far the nicest people living in one of the nicest areas I have ever had the pleasure of living.

What's all the whining about stereotypes? The article says

By some estimates, about one-third of the dental patients in the mountain region fall into that category, and Bailey believes it is the primary reason that central Appalachian states lead the nation in toothlessness.

About 38 percent of Kentucky residents surveyed last year had lost six or more teeth because of decay or gum disease, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

That number was 32 percent in Tennessee and nearly 43 percent in West Virginia, which had the nation's top rate.

So if almost half of West Virginians have lost six or more teeth because of decay or gum disease, isn't it only slightly statistically misleading to make fun of West Virginians in general for being toothless hillbillies? I mean, if almost half are missing >5 teeth, that probably means the other half are missing at least one!

/Just kidding. Lighten up, Francis!

The people who make up these statistics rarely make it out to civilization. I've seen some documentaries on families who live up in the hills and all, and you'd be surprised how primitively some folks are living in this day and age. Anyone who lives in the nicer areas of WV that keep getting mentioned in this thread is probably far away from the 43%.

From TFA:

In addition, some Christian groups have opened free clinics in church buildings, which are staffed by volunteer dentists who come to the region from other parts of the state for weeklong mission trips.

Still others hold dental-care events in Wal-Mart parking lots.

TheHazMatGuy is right. It is Wal-Mart's fault.

Ok, I must say that WV is my favorite place in the eastern half of the country. I used to live in NoVA and had a few friends who worked near DC and lived in WV. I loved going up there, easily the prettiest mountains in the east and super nice people. Would live there anyday if I could ever convince my wife to do so as well. She is from Miami, now that is a shiathole of the highest order for ya.

As for being expensive logistic, try crossing the border into Fairfax county some time. You have it much better where you are, and you get the benefit of nicer people and the most glorious scenery available around Harper's Ferry, etc. Don't compain!

Q. Why do ducks fly over West Virginia upside down?

A. There's nothing worth craping on!

Q. What do a tornado and a West Virginia divorce have in common?

A. Someone always loses a trailer.

The article isn't very clear about it, but i'm pretty sure that the surveys were only conducted in Appalachian regions of KY and TN.

I've spent lots of time in Western KY, Louisville, Lexington, Nashville, Knoxville, and Charleston. People have teeth. There is no way that such large portions of the populations of the entire state have lost 6 OR MORE teeth.
