Well, they want an M-113, not a tank. The picture that goes along with the article is very misleading- that's a 'vismod'. An M-113 visually modified to look like something else, for training purposes.
A M-113 has no turret, and no weapons permanently attached. There is a mount for a .50 cal, but that's it.
The armor on a 113 is also thin enough that it will stop small arms fire, but nothing more. I don't know how it would fare against explosives. Depends on the explosives, placement, etc...too many variables.

In any event, while I don't see an immediate need for it, I don't see how Denver buying one would be a bad thing.
I mean, really, $35,000 is not a lot to request for one of these- I bet their police cruisers aren't much cheaper.

What a bunch of crap. I still can't see how they would help in a WMD attack using nukes (the tank vaporized the same millisecond everything around it did), biological (do you really want people with the plague crammed into the same 20 sq ft as you), chemical (maybe, but see biological).

I don't think the money should be spent on cop toys. If anything the money should go to the fire department so they can buy equipment that might help save people instead of giving the cops another weapon.

This is a joke, same thing happens in our town the cops/fire dept buy all this crap just so they have some "cool stuff" to play with. we have less than 3000 people but the cops have police dogs, atvs, suvs, we have no building over 2 stories in town but yet the fire dept has a huge ladder fire truck!

Didn't we hear this article about 2 years ago when crazy ass Joe Arpaio wanted one. I know he bought a humvee w/ an Anti-Aircraft gun. Ya know to protect the gorgeous Phoenix skyline. Maybe BOB.

Actually, not state money. It's money from Dept of Homeland Security. Money that should have gone to NYC, DC, or LA to protect actual targets rather a piece of rock in the middle of nowhere.
