MSN doesn't even have my sisters house that she's been living in for 8 years.

2005-07-25 10:55:01 AM
Umm.... some of them are very old satellite shots. my house isn't there, even though I've been living in it more than 10 years.

2005-07-25 10:58:46 AM
Wow. My grandmother's house isn't on there either. I think it's because she called iMac tech support one too many times.

2005-07-25 10:59:29 AM
Google bought the rights to the most recent satellite pictures. And the next few years worth.
Ha! Microsoft can't buy everything.

2005-07-25 11:07:41 AM
What's more disturbing is that they still have the WTC.

2005-07-25 11:07:57 AM
How new is the Cupertino campus? The Virtual Earth has some fairly old satellite shots.

2005-07-25 11:23:48 AM
If it was feasible, I'd want Google to have my baby. I love how they just keep improving

2005-07-25 11:24:36 AM
I think those are actually USGS survey shots, taken from an airplane.

2005-07-25 11:26:45 AM
Didn't Bill Gates buy a controlling share (or at least a significant share) in Apple a few years back? Or am I hallucinating?

2005-07-25 11:33:15 AM
I suppose this is what Bill Gates plans on doing in the near future...

2005-07-25 11:47:15 AM
Yeah, MSN is using old photos. My house was built just about a year ago and it's not on there. That's not too surprising, but my parents' house was built in 1994 and it's not there, either. It just shows a dirt lot.

2005-07-25 12:01:57 PM
I dunno. I'm at Santa Clara University, probably only 5 or so miles away, and the shots seem to be relatively recent -- I'd say past 4 years or so. I think Apple's Cupertino campus is older than that, and I also think that both the University and Apple would have been in the same satellite shot. That said, Apple definitely looks under construction (construction trailers and such). So maybe they weren't blurred out, just "replaced" with an older shot? Or maybe the satellite shots of my school and of Apple were taken at different times.

My home town: Smalltown, USA

I think the image came fropm the old Microsoft Terraserver site.

2005-07-25 12:41:48 PM
This story would have been a lot more interesting if it were actually a story.

2005-07-25 12:52:34 PM
My company's office building doesn't appear on MSN, either. Does that mean I'm not actually working today?

2005-07-25 01:08:45 PM
Too little, too late. Google Maps/Earth is faster and cleaner.

2005-07-25 02:12:06 PM
pshaw:

My home town: Smalltown, USA

Not found. MSN Earth has a weird quirk where if you click on a link that it can't find it displays the last map you were viewing. For a second I thought you were from my old home town in Montana because that's what came up. I was looking at it earlier.

But then I pasted your coordinates into Google maps and I see that you're in TN. Not sure why the MSN link isn't working.

2005-07-25 03:13:22 PM
Not sure why the MSN link isn't working.

Probably still quirks in the software. I used the "Permalink" button to get that link.

2005-07-25 03:26:47 PM
My house of 8 years is an empty field on both servers.

What's more disturbing is that they still have the WTC.

Seriously?!? Wow. That's...disturbing.

Even more disturbing MSN's Virtual Earth still shows the twin towers of the World Trade Center in all their pre-9/11 glory.

I don't get this "let's pretend like the WTC never existed" mindset. Why is it neccessary to erase the WTC from every movie, photo, tv show, and software program?

2005-07-25 03:28:47 PM
Why doesn't MS just launch its own satellite? They've got the dough.

2005-07-25 03:30:12 PM
Yeah whoever remarked that those are USGS shots was correct. The problem with USGS airial pics is that they can date back 20 years or more. I live in jax and the USGS pics are only outdated 5 years. But this city changes daily. There's so much you can't get from the airials. Keyhole is where everyone is going.

This microsoft thing is funny. Google has them running scared. Everytime google does something remarkable Microsoft copies it but with marginal success.

2005-07-25 03:30:15 PM
Can't blame them too much for keeping their R & D headquarters cloaked.

2005-07-25 03:30:26 PM
Not as bad as a U.S. Navy Base shaped like a swastika.

2005-07-25 03:30:48 PM
The infinite loop campus has been around for a while. I don't know when it was constructed but macs from circa 1995 had a picture of it in an easter egg. MS is using some old-ass pics. I'd hate to think how out of date their road maps are.

2005-07-25 03:31:02 PM
Can you say too much free time?

That said, this seems pretty much in-line with Microsoft's corporate strategy: "Today's Technology...Tomorrow"

2005-07-25 03:31:18 PM
Continuing on what I just said. The pics on microsofts site are so old that the headquarters hadn't even been built yet in them.

2005-07-25 03:31:18 PM
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Apple's Cupertino campus located in Arkansas?

2005-07-25 03:32:45 PM
HA! The street around the Apple Cupertino headquarters is Infinite Loop... That's amusing

2005-07-25 03:32:48 PM
This could be no more than an old picture taken before Cupertino was built or a glimpse of an imagined future.

This could be no more than a horrible attempt at a news story or a glimpse into the imagined research done on this article.

2005-07-25 03:33:25 PM
The building was under construction - so this thread is pointless.

2005-07-25 03:33:58 PM
Some of their pics are very old, but there are places (Tampa, for example) where they aren't that old and are actually of higher resolution than the Google ones. The USF campus is a good example.

"Erased -- from existance!"

I don't get this "let's pretend like the WTC never existed" mindset. Why is it neccessary to erase the WTC from every movie, photo, tv show, and software program?

What's the WTC?

2005-07-25 03:35:29 PM
This isn't a cool, snarky comment by Bill's minions. There's no way to see this other than as proof that Microsoft's own agenda makes them unreliable. I say that from my Dell/MS laptop, but it's still true.

2005-07-25 03:35:55 PM
It's definately old satellite photos. You can see the mobile offices of the construction crew at the top of the lot. And I doubt this was purposeful since they also left the WTC twin towers in place.

"Even more disturbing MSN's Virtual Earth still shows the twin towers of the World Trade Center in all their pre-9/11 glory."

This is just MSN being cheap and buying ald satellite stock photos

2005-07-25 03:36:02 PM
Interesting. According to Microsoft's maps, my house has been cut in half. I'm fairly certain it wasn't like that when I left this morning.
Google doesn't even seem to know where my house is exactly...

2005-07-25 03:36:26 PM
Heh - Heh!

Microsoft couldn't even find itself.

2005-07-25 03:36:54 PM
Wow, MSN Earth really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really sux0rs!

2005-07-25 03:37:59 PM
Lets just chalk this one up to MS trying to one up Google, and failing. The msn icons for Interstate 280 also look horrid. (and the fact they are using super old sat data.)

Yay for the Google Overlords. I can't wait for them to offer a new service where you can pay to re-task their satellites and get real time data.

2005-07-25 03:38:07 PM
Ant - There's a lot of anecdotal postings so far "My grandmother's house isn't here" or "this development is still farmland" or whatnot, but pointing out that the Twin Towers are still there is more of a universal statement of how old and outdated some of the images are that Microsoft is using for their flashy new service.

What a stupid article.

2005-07-25 03:38:47 PM
wow, this got greenlit?, i mean, i enjoy a chance to bash microsoft as much as (alright, probably more than) the next guy, but wtf?

2005-07-25 03:39:09 PM
Those satellite pics are crazy outdated. They don't even show the "CHA" on the moon.

2005-07-25 03:41:00 PM
I used to work for Microsoft (before the farkers sent my job to India) supporting home and office products. One of the hardest calls to take was from someone who had just bought the newest version of Streets and Trips only to find out his neighborhood or sometimes even his entire town wasn't included in the latest version.

/usually gave them back their money
//never got a good explanation why they farked up
///me and 398 other people got farked by microsoft in a day

2005-07-25 03:41:05 PM
What about the WTC in it's post 9/11 glory???

2005-07-25 03:41:51 PM
Anonymous, you're wrong. So corrected. It's in California, as is obvious from every "designed in california" label they stick on their hardware.

Along with what phong3d said, you'd think New York of all places would have updated satellite photos. If some small town in Iowa wasn't there at all you wouldn't be surprised but you expect if anything's going to be updated it'd be NY.
Don't worry, my paper coffee cups didn't change their design.
