More like dumbass tag. Funny how the only people who think dyke is offensive are straight. I call myself a dyke and don't flinch. But have had lots of straight people tell me they don't like the word cause it's offensive. Like WTF? I'm the dyke and I'm fine with it, and they're straight and don't like it so I'm not supposed to use the word? Don't think so.

We always called the LPGA: Dykes on Spikes

2005-07-15 07:38:57 AM
I'm with you 100% on that one, cargrrl. I've noticed those trends myself.

It's like some straights want to keep the word for themselves - to hate lesbians with. If we take it back from them, use it in an empowering way, they get all pissy.

I suppose it's partly because we've been conditioned that words like "dyke" and "fag" are offensive, and get jumpy whenever we hear anyone use them. It's like the dreaded n-word in that regard.

Do I need to start referring to "dyke" as "the d-word" now?

2005-07-15 08:25:31 AM
I don't use the word because I hate Dutch infrastructure.

2005-07-15 08:36:49 AM
Isn't 'dyke' kind of like 'twink' or 'bear' or whatever in the gay world? To me it describes a certain type of lesbian -the heavier, mulleted kind which is different from the 'lipstick lesbian' type.

/likes the 'lipstick lesbian' types.

2005-07-15 08:38:14 AM
Some people just get offended by more words than others. My CAD teacher in high school found the word "damn" offensive and wouldnt let us say it, darnit.

Not really. Dyke is slang for lesbian.

To me it describes a certain type of lesbian -the heavier, mulleted kind which is different from the 'lipstick lesbian' type.

Now that would be "butch" and "femme", if the need is found to catagorize. Many don't fit into either catagory, but usually in the media we either see one extreme or the other.

Ditto. I call myself that sometimes too and I'm more on the femme side of the spectrum (but not too much). Mornin:

Does the status of the word dyke come and go in cycles? "Queer" was rude for a while until gays decided to take it back about 15 years ago.

2005-07-15 09:27:07 AM
For me, using "dyke" is kind of like using the N word. If you are a dyke, use it with abandon. I would just never use it in case it would be offensive. If you are African-American, you have every right to use the N word...I just won't. But, I get to call myself a "cracker" whenever I want to.

2005-07-15 10:15:09 AM
...on the grounds that "dyke" is vulgar, offensive and "scandalous."

But it's certainly ok to preach that they're abominations.

I call myself that and I'm so femme, it's like the anti-stereotype.

I've got it on good authority that the lesbians you see in pr0n are not the same in real life.

/not that there's anything wrong with it

How about "clam lappers"?

Sounds like grade 10 English class. We were to make a movie and we were going to call our's "Dykes, K*kes and Motorbikes" but the teacher did not approve.

I'm way on the femme side. Just with a sense of flair and a warped sense of style. Love my dresses and skirts, but also got a place in my heart for pretty well everything else. Love my high tops as much as my high heels.

I would say that to 99% of straight people, men and women, a dyke is a butch woman. I know that the lesbian population of FARK has a different connotation in mind, but c'est la vie. For better or for worse, in American culture, a dyke is a butch girl.

Nice dyke. I mean bike...

I think you are thinking of the term "bull dyke".

/is that offensive?

2005-07-15 02:48:53 PM
the real question is are the "dykes on bikes" hot or ugly? if they are hot then they should be allowed to use the name.

2005-07-15 02:50:57 PM
dyke:

I think that's the fear, that the dykes are taking all the good pus.. OH! Pissy! My bad.

If these are teh Dykes on Bikes of Ron and Ron fame then they are not portrayed as hawt. Wanda and Joanne?

Ok- More on lesbians. I love lesbians because they are willing to make sacrifices for their sexuality which means sexis important to them which means they like sex as much as I do which is a lot. Really, really a lot.

2005-07-15 02:53:23 PM
Last week, the USPTO rejected "wife-beater" as a trademark for sleeveless T-shirts. It just has to be offensive to some identifiable portion of society to be rejected. Dyke is offensive to an identifiable portion of society.

2005-07-15 02:54:17 PM
Can't we just use the word "homosexual" or "homo" for short?

"homo's on bikes"

Accurate, Non offensive, and has a nice ring to it.

2005-07-15 02:54:24 PM
Those who are bull dykes generally refer to themselves as such and/or don't take it as an insult.

I basically straddle all of the lines, so I just call myself queer. Works for me.

2005-07-15 02:55:12 PM

gman69: Dyke is offensive to an identifiable portion of society.

I think it needs to be more than identifiable, it has to be a significant or maybe even majority portion. That's the argument: who finds the term dyke to be offensive?

2005-07-15 02:57:22 PM
I have this theory that every lesbian woman in the United States gets their haircut at the same salon. It's part of the uniform. You get the haircut the same day they issue the Wrangler jeans and penny loafers.

This is my theory and it belongs to me.
