That's awesome that Hillary Clinton plays GTA.

2005-07-14 11:38:49 AM
Don't buy it then, it has an "M" rating for a reason.

2005-07-14 11:39:38 AM
If you throw in turrism, she'd sound like some any other politician using fear-mongering to pass their agenda.

Government, you're not my fcuking nanny. You're not my mom. Get the fark out of my daily life. Go back to protecting us from foreign threats, not free thought.

This country is in dire need of a civil/revolutionary war to reboot everything.

You think that's bad, you should see the "Bill Frist/Hillary Clinton" cheat code I have. I call it "afterglow with a lead pipe"

btw, to those who don't see it for what it is:

This is a really misguided attempt to skim a few votes away from the "moral values" crowd. There will be a handful of ignorant grannies out there who will applaud this kind of intervention.

If GTA sucks, then people won't buy it. No need for gov't interference.

It takes a village to pick up hookers and kill Haitians...

I remember back when parents were the ones in charge of their kids. I don't blame the government for butting into our lives.

I blame lazy-ass parents for not wanting to raise their own kids and calling on the government to do so.

You know, the primary reason I would not vote for Lieberman if he ran for President is because he's so big on censorship. If Clinton decides to make it her signature issue, and the Republicans decide to run Jeb, I'll have no choice but to vote for Kodos.

I don't think Hillary is concerned about the quality of the game...

"has so many demeaning messages about women and so encourages violent imagination and activities and it scares parents...."

THE GAME IS NOT FOR CHILDREN!

I'm sorry. I have been playing videogames for 20 years. The game is rated M. From the back of the game:

MATURE 17+
BLOOD AND GORE
INTENSE VIOLENCE
STRONG LANGUAGE
STRONG SEXUAL CONTENT
USE OF DRUGS

If the store sells the game to a minor, they should be fined. If a parent buys this game for their child, they are retarded.

Hillary Clinton and Joe Lieberman and their anti-videogame crusaders are some of the worst examples of nanny-state politicians I've ever seen.

Hey, for an added "fark you", here's a link to the "Hot Coffee" enabling save for Xbox on our website.

Ain't that what I pay ma taxes fo? You 'spect me to raise my 8 younguns by myself? How am I spost to do that, suck cock for crack money, AND watch my stories? Next thing you know, they gonna try to tell me I got to pay for my own trailer.

From the article:

In a letter dated Thursday to FTC chairwoman Deborah Platt Majoras, she also urged the agency to examine whether the game's rating of "M" for mature should be changed to an "Adults Only" rating.

Does anyone know the difference in these ratings? I assumed that Mature +17 meant "adult."

2005-07-14 11:51:03 AM
the united states government scares me. I'm a parent...so maybe she can start an investigation into the entire government. yeah, that'd be nice...

2005-07-14 11:51:32 AM
Hey, Hillary, as long as you are going to use the awesome powers of the Federal Government to make sure my videogames are okay, could you figure out a way to keep my eleven year old cousin from consistently whipping my ass on Madden? I'd appreciate it, you freakin' nanny-state wanting harpy.

Like booze and cigarettes, man. If they sell to underaged people, they get in trouble. It's easy. The goal should be to crack down on retailers, if people are really so worried about it.

Depends on which US-approved definition of "adult" you're using. Is it the 14-year-old kid being tried as an "adult"? Is it the 16-year-old that is "adult" enough to drive a car? Perhaps the 18-year-old "adult" that can vote, go to war, and buy porn? Maybe we're talking about the 21-year-old "adult" that can buy liquor? Of course there's always the "adult" that becomes a responsible driver at age 25.

The only difference I know of is that WalMart won't carry "Adults Only" games, which would have a pretty severe impact on GTA's sales.

Stop playing with the Saints. Pick up a team like the Eagles, Pats or Vikings.

I'm certainly opposed to all this talk about government censorship but as I said before I don't think we can put all the blame on Hillary here. She's simply responding to what she knows many in the general public are crying for. If she thought that pushing state-sponsored censorship wouldn't be well recieved she wouldn't bring it up.

Politicians are scummy, to be sure, but they always tell us what we want to hear.*

OK, found something:

"Mature

Titles rated Mature (M) have content suitable for people ages 17 and up. These products may include more intense violence or language than products in the Teen category. In addition, these titles may include mature sexual themes.

Adults Only

Titles rated Adults Only (AO) have content suitable only for adults. These products may include graphic depictions of sex and/or violence. Adults Only products are not intended to be sold or rented to persons under the age of 18."

That's from here.

2005-07-14 11:57:37 AM
Hopefully she's miscalculated, NICU8697. We'll see.

2005-07-14 11:58:20 AM
So, we're talking about 17-year-olds, solely.

Sure, fine, make the rating Adults Only. I don't give a sh*t.

2005-07-14 11:58:44 AM
If people don't like the game, or the way it is distributed, then vote with your wallets. It'll send a message that the publishers truely understand. Getting the government to regulate more and more little details of everything is just insane.

I'll do the investigation, actually I'm already done, here are my results:

Dear Senator Clinton,

GTA3: San Andreas has been found to contain sex, drugs, and violence. Furthermore, it is the recommendation of this investigation that this game not be played by children. Please find the enclosed bill for the cost of this investigation and remit the $486,647.22 as soon as possible.

Needed to be repeated. This is the only true way to get rid of things that you don't like/approve of.

If that is true, then many in the public aren't doing their farking parental jobs correctly -- if they were, their kid wouldn't have the game in the first place.

2005-07-14 12:01:00 PM
I know, lets add more warning labels to everything. And more waivers.

When you buy a video game you have to read a ten page document on parental, societal responsibility, an essay on how video games are not real and should not be taken seriously, any action you take mimicking the video game is not the responsibility of the retailer, manufacturer, distributor, or designer. Do not take this video game internally. Playing this video game for extended amounts of time may damage your eyes, attention span, physical endurance and may make you fat and/or socially inadequate. voice modulators are not cool.

You'll have to sign it, initial each page, note it with your social security number, driver's license number, your address, phone number, 5 references and a psycholgist's recommendation (everyone will be carrying around "SANE" licenses that they have to update every 6 months. in a related scientology discrimiation lawsuit, scientologists are allowed to carry either "CLEAR" or "PRE-CLEAR" licenses.). After a 2 week waiting period during which they check your references, crimial record, academic transcripts, and credit report, they'll give you a call and let you know that you can pick up your game along with a slew of custom tailored advertisments (everyone gets the same pile) and credit card applications along with a coupon that you can use at the next gun show (where you can walk in and walk out with a gun the same hour).

I'm pretty sure that the adults only rating is more like rating a movie XXX than R. It can't be displayed in a lot of places and needs to be hidden.

the_pgoat: Adults Only

Because the difference between 17 and 18 is so significant? When you turn 18 you're magically mature enough to handle simulated violence and simulated sexual content? What a farking joke. I'd heap the blame on the legislators, but they're just pandering to all the parents who are completely out of touch with their children and modern society.

Bingo. Though you could've left off the "correctly" at the end, since most "parents" don't even try to do their job, correctly or otherwise.

She's simply responding to what she knows many in the general public are crying for. If she thought that pushing state-sponsored censorship wouldn't be well recieved she wouldn't bring it up.

That doesn't make it right. She's pandering. Tipper Gore did it in the 80's. Hey, I don't think an eight-year-old should be playing GTA, and I don't think a store should sell GTA to an eight-year-old, and I think parents should have a heads up, right on the box, that the game is for adults, so that they don't mistakenly buy it for their eight-year-old for Christmas thinking it's going to be like Super Mario Kart. But, I draw the line at going after the content itself. There's a line there, and as a well-educated lawyer, she knows what that line is. When you start going after content, that's censorship. Labelling a game just provides more information for parents, and I find no harm in that.

Exactly like the difference between 18 and 21. Of course the big difference between 17 and 18 is that you can vote. SO she wouldn't want to miss out on all the new voters that will be to busy playing their video games to hit the ballots on election day.

Sure, fine, make the rating Adults Only. I don't give a sh*t.

But see, the thing is, even with the built in, hidden by Rockstar "Hot Coffee" mode on, there's still nothing in the game worse than an R-rated movie.

If we're comparing to movie ratings, for an R rating, persons under thirteen cannot get in, 13-17 can with a parent, and 17+ are unrestricted.

That's pretty much what the ESRB is modeled after, and if it were enforced at retail, I think is a fine system. This is a total non-issue that these jackasses are latching on to for no reason other than to attract the votes of the ignorant. (shocking, considering they are politicians)

Of course she's pandering! She's a politician! In case you haven't noticed, pandering has taken the place of old-school, simple lying on our national political front.

2005-07-14 12:06:35 PM
She's got to maintain a delicate balance, because there are a lot of people in her base who will be annoyed by this type of thing. I'm not in her base, but I'd consider voting for her.

Not if she continues the douchery.

I see what you mean, about the parallel with the movie ratings. **nod**

2005-07-14 12:10:15 PM
Do you have to be 17 or 18 to get into an r-rated movie? (yeah, I know you can get in anyway, but that's beside the point)

Is an "Adults Only" video game rating much like an NC 17 rating?

2005-07-14 12:11:31 PM
The problem with the AO rating is that the game will ultimately end up having to be sold at the equivalent of a video game "Porno shop". This will severely restrict sales, and undercut the marketability of this or similar games. Therefore, they won't get made.

While I enjoy Katamari, I don't think all games have to be squeaky clean. And, more and more adults are playing games as they are from a generation that has grown up with nintendo (commadore 64, pong, et al). This fact is being overlooked for the knee-jerk, paternalistic, "think of the children" argument. This is censorship in a bad disguise.
