Konacki has developed a method to extract the planet wobbles from this messy, combined spectrum.

We have come much further in technology than I had realized! Someone should tell Whitney, so they can use this on heranus.

The planet has two moons that do most of the work one named Bud and the other named Uncle Charlie.

/God I know to damn much about classic TV

That would be so beautiful, don't you think?

Reminds me of this from my childhood:

I think I'm too young to get the reference in the headline.

Help from you old folk, please?

(I say old folk lovingly...I can't wait to be in my forties...but I have at least 20 years to go.)

There was a T.V. show called "My Three Sons." It stared lamewad actor Fred MacMurry. The Submitter is playing off the title of that show.

"It is the first extrasolar planet found in a system with three stars. How a planet was born amidst these competing gravitational forces will be a challenge for planet formation theories."

Two.

continued...

The show was a 60's sit-com. One of the main characters was the boy's crochety old uncle, Uncle Charlie.

Interesting note. Fred MacMurray was seldom on set for the filming of the show because he was an a55hole and working doing shiaty Disney movies. The other cast members would shoot their parts like a normal show. Fred would come in and shoot all his scenes at a later time. You will often see him by himself in many many many shots.

if it's 149 light years away, does that mean we're seeing what was there 149 years ago, or 149,000? not sure what the right conversion is

I'd be more impressed if we knew what it looked like right now, in the present. Not several hundred or thousands of years from now, just to see now.

I couldn't agree more...but it seems to make some folks happy.

(I've said folks twice in one day and I've rarely used that word in my life. I think our President is rubbing off on me...pray for me, please.)

Ha, I'm laughing at what I just said so hard...and I wonder if anyone else will.

"lamewad actor Fred MacMurry"
Except that he was uttery brilliant in the CAINE MUTINY.

Very spineless character though.

btw--one time my wife and her peers at work were having major problems with this overbearing and oddly eccentric manager.I made her watch the CAINE MUTINY and it completely changed her attitude.

I'm now singing the theme song to ATHF in my head and dancing in my office chair.

If I weren't married, I'd propose to you. You've said, count em, two things so far that made me smile out loud. (In a manner of speaking.)

mckenna.christina: I think our President is rubbing off on me...pray for me, please.

yeah i know what you mean, i find myself laughing at people who try to ask me valid questions, asking asinine rhetorical questions in a condescending tone, and falling off of wheeled vehicles a lot lately

149 years ago, Tongue

I find all this tremendously exciting. We're finding planets farking everywhere. Only gas giants at the moment but soon (5-10 years maybe) we'll be seeing Earth-sized planets and watching their ice-caps and (hopefully) vegetation changing with the seasons and analysing the atmosphere. It's quite likely that within the next decade we will know that Earth is not the only planet with life. Isn't that exciting? Then we might all pull together and stop being such monumental arseholes to each other and to the environment.

You ever see a trinary star system....on WEED?

2005-07-14 11:29:37 AM
TONGUE

we are seeing what was in existence 147 years ago. A light year is a measure of distance not time. 1 light year equals the amount of distance covered by light that travels for 365 days. So this place they are talking about is 9,500,000,000,000 times 147 kilometers away. Pretty farking far if you ask me and I don't see why this news is at all farkworthy. We are never gonna get to this place. Anyway hope that helped.

Ok, quick! Trivia time!!!

Q: In My 3 Sons, towards the end of the series, what was the little sister's character's name?
What was her real name?
And what heart throb of the 70s is she related to?

"Now imagine two suns... the earth is lifeless..."

Does anyone else remember that ad for Time-Life books?

Man, I can't imagine what kind of UV rating the sunblock would need on that planet. Probably just scientific notation on the label...
