Yep. The best of private enterprise and true communist idiocy...I mean ideology, all wrapped up into one.

golly. does that mean i can take my tibetan friends in that restaurant and the owners will have to apologize to them?

Great. Greenlight. Here is the synopsis of this thread so that no one needs to post.

1) Dozens will yell about "Japanese have to own up to their history and apologize and pay reparations for the horrors they inflicted upon the poor innocent Chinese" ignoring the last 50 years of loans, yearly foreign aid, and heavy investment in the Chinese economy. And also ignoring the quintannual apology made by the Japanese government.

2) Dozens of others will be yelling "don't repeat history by visiting the sins of the father on the son" and they will point out the above points about apologies and money and then will ignore the pretty systematic attempt to forget what happened. And Koizumi's yearly visits to the war shrine.

The end. Go about your business. Politics is farked and the more you buy into the crap propaganda fed you by ANY government, Chinese or Japanese or Martian, the more of an idiot you will become. Everyone is an asshole. Let's work from that and try to be friends.

Does the Chinese equivalent of Basil Fawlty own this restaurant?

Well, that whole Rape Of Nanking thing was pretty significant. It's offensive as well that Japanese history books in schools tend to omit just about all of World War 2. Not to mention that the Japanese are one of the world's most proflic polluters and depleter of endangered animals for aphrodesiac purposes.

Well, I have a Japanese history text right in front of me. And it has a pretty graphic description of Nanking in it. Do you begrudge them the right to tell the story their own way? The fact is that the present generation of kids ARE learning about the war. The last generation (anyone over 30) didn't really learn much, just that it happened and that Japan had done some bad shiat but that some think they were pushed into it.

Not to mention that the Japanese are one of the world's most proflic polluters and depleter of endangered animals for aphrodesiac purposes.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'd need to see some sources for that.

Well, I was basing my comments on that regarding what I knew to be true at one time, so perhaps things have changed.

Looking....my comments on this came from a BBC television special I watched about how poachers are killing rhino's in Africa because some (rather weatlthy) Japanese businessmen believe the powder from the horn is a powerful aphrodesiac and pay big bucks for it. Apparently, they have never heard of Viagra.

Re-Japan and pollution...best I could do on this short of notice, plus I have to get on with my day.

Actually, China is Asia'a leading polluter as far as air pollution goes. The acid rain Japan gets is a gift from China and India.

But I think you'll find that China is the greater consumer of the two here. And that Iceland kills as many whales with a population 0.2% that of Japan's. Perhaps your, the BBC special's, data is correct but that hardly makes Japan "one of the world's most proflic polluters and depleter of endangered animals for aphrodesiac purposes".

And I've just realised that I'm not sure how that is relevant to the Chinese restaurant owner being a racist prick.

It's not, and I'm with you on the restaurant owner thing.

It's like a black owned restaurant demanding all white patrons make apologies for slavery.

Lately the Chinese government has been egging on its people to get upset about things like stupid books used by 8 of Japan's 10,000 middle schools to cover up the Chinese grab for favored status over Japan and the U.S. in world markets. Make Japan look bad in the world's eyes, gain a competitive edge when you're the Chinese and you go into a country, flush with bribes and designs on exclusive contracts and trading concessions.

And then sometimes, restaurant owners ingest a little too much of their own MSG.

/this tin-foil hat is chafing...

2005-07-12 09:56:13 AM
That's awful and hilarious at the same time. Chinese citizens demanding other nations own up to their own humanitarian failures. The hypocrisy is so powerful it would knock over small children.

2005-07-12 09:58:13 AM
That's just farking petty, espscially coming from China. Like somebody else said, I hope Tibetans eat there free.

Chinese restaurant owner being a racist prick.

Actually, aren't Chinese and Japanese members of the same race? It's like calling an American France-basher a racist. It would be more accurate to call him a "nationalistic prick."
Hmmm...China really is catching up with the US.

This reminds me of that book "Kitchen Confidential", when Tony Bourdain is in cooking school. In his "Oriental Cookery" class (hey, this was in the 70's), he had a Chinese teacher, and when the Japanese portion of the class came up, the teacher would give an extended lecture on the Rape of Nanking. I dug up the book, and here's the passage (forgive any typos):

"His loathing of the Japanese was consuming. In between describing the bayoneting of women, children and babies in World War II, he'd point at a poster of a sushi/sashimi presentation on the wall, and say in his brokem heavily-accented English, 'That a raw fish. You wanna eat that? Hah! Japanese shiat!' Then he'd go back into his dissertation on forced labor, mass executions and enslavement, hinting darkly that Japan would pay, sooner or later, for what it had done to his country."

2005-07-12 12:54:01 PM
Yes, let us all be obligated for the rest of eternity to apologize for things that happened hundreds and thousands of years ago and with which we ourselves had absolutely no involvement. I think that's fair.

That quote is just as relevant to yours. Define "truth". They do tell the factual truth, they just add "why" in their own words.

So does this mean we can make the French wear all white in American restaurants?

Farkin A: Shush, sweetie, the adults are having a discussion.

2005-07-12 12:58:37 PM
The problem I have for this is that it is the same as people wanting monetary reparations for slavery, which is completely asinine. Are these Japanese consumers the ones who actually committed the WWII atrocities? Did any of these Japanese individuals actually rape Nanking? If any are alive that did commit those atrocities, they probably won't try to eat at a Chinese restaurant, so the point is moot.

The Japanese to which they are denying service have done nothing.

2005-07-12 12:58:41 PM
I don't know if this is going to tick anyone off but,if people think this is absurd, how about reparations to African-American families whose ancestors, who lived over one hundred years ago, were slaves? Correct me if I'm out of line, but I think reparations are crazier than a simple, "I'm sorry. Table for two, please."

This would have gotten the "HERO" tag from some right winger if it was a U.S. diner requiring the French to apologize for not supporting the Iraq war.

But instead it's "china is so commie and evil, look at this crap!"

This article makes me wonder what the history books will say in 50 years about Iraq.

I guess the red state history books will say "The USA invaded Iraq after Iraq attacked on 9/11".

They are the same race, but there are genetic differences -- ones a bit too subtle for Western/white types, but noticeable to Asians. Vietnamese, Koreans, Filipinoes would be identifiable on sight to those living in the East, as well.

Sometimes racism is practiced, and quite blatantly, by many Asians versus Asians. I guess you could call it "sub-racism".
