Thanks a lot, submitter, it's 1-2' and windy here. Even the Gulf States are getting better waves than I am right now.

I dont agree with the term "wild ride". I have surfed 15ft faces that scared the shiat out of me. Sure this guys legs may be sore---but come on its just like a long walk in the park.

i dont get it... how does one wave continue for 10km??? doesnt it reach the shore at some point? i need a diagram explaining how you surf a RIVER. totally lost, i am

2005-07-10 11:28:36 PM
I guess not... The wave really isn't mighty, but it's interesting how it's generated. It's like the Atlantic regurgitates into the Amazon. Google it.

-Pororoca. The word is from a local Indian language and it translates as "great destructive noise." Others call it "Monster," or "Killer."

Nicknames like these mean a good opportunity for the greats of surfing to come and test their mettle.

So the things a wave, and it rolls up the Amazon and other rivers in Northeastern Brazil. First theres low tide, and the river pushes back the sea. And then the tables turn, as they inevitably must, and the tide comes back in. The currents a powerful one, and the match between sea and river can produce only one victor. Out there on the open sea, a giant wave rears up its head; it reaches the rivers mouth which, even though its very wide, gives the wave an even bigger punch and sends it charging up-river, three to four meters high. Only after around 13 kilometers will it come to rest and slip back, leaving behind it the colossal mess that the people living by the river experience twice daily during the full moons between January and April. The wave washes away whole trees, tons of dirt and more than a few panicking animals that either a.) find humans tasty to begin with or b.) get quite dangerous when their desperate.

first i thought the headline said the wave was 10KM high, then i was greatly disappointed.

Kat i know i couldnt do anything that required standing up for a half hour. but im a programmer so i have an excuse, your a hostess...come on.

oh and hook me up with one of those one blink thing gets small, second blink thing gets big again laser thingys. id like to small blink a lot of things then just leave them that way... annoying people, trash, bad drivers, my yard.... the list goes on

Kat as a food expeditor in the philly area, i would LOVE to know how you get away as a waitress without the ability to stand for more than a half hour at a time. I'm dead tired after a 12 hour day of walking as a "just below jogging" pace up and down steps all day. I'm clearly working the wrong restaurant

Yea, it's wonderful that he was able to do that. Just remember folks, when entering the waters of the Amazon and the like...to secure your penises with something so that little bugs don't crawl up your urethras and then they must amputate your penis....

specialj oh, i just hostess. when i started, hostesses weren't supposed to sit at the bar between seating people. i was like "fark that." since then, everyone gets to sit when we're free. customers like talking to us, i see people as they walk in, so really, it was a silly rule.

Actaully, that was in Step Into Liquid.

Last September, I met Pete Mel (famous for Tow-in @ Mav's)who was here with Frank Walsh (Jersey), Tom Carroll (AUS) and they surfed the tidal bore here in Nova Scotia. I guess its pretty intense because its such a long ride. 10.1km is freakin long. Plus the threat of Malaria, Pirhannas, etc. would make it even crazier. Good for him.

Then again, as some one mentioned before, a 35ft. wave at Maverick's + a whipeout would be even more intense. Nothing like being slammed down into some rocks 40 ft. below the surface. Worst thing this guy could face would be a fall, where he can jsut get back up and catch another wave, maybe.

Kat:

nicely played. sadly the place i work is under "new management" so things are going steadily to the crapper. just today i was yelled at for eating my meal at the bar by new management. to hell with that, i say. hostessing is the way to go if you're looking to be laid back in a restaurant. anyways, back to the topic at hand:

surfing- neat.

To get a taste of what the Pororoca is all about check out the trailer for "Pororoca - Surfing the Amazon" by Bill Heath. Shot in 2003, it's one of the best adventure surfing docos I've ever seen. It's not available on DVD right now so it's a bit hard to find but Bill might be getting around to changing that real soon.

Take a look at "Sinners" too, while you're at it. Best ski movie evar...

Yes, thank you. We rule. =)
I must say, us true* surfers are a different breed. But remember, those guys are the big wave riders. Look for Step Into Liquid in your local video store. It will give you a whole new perspective on the lifestyle of everyday surfers. I see you're from Ontario, so you might get a kick out of the part in the movie where they show people surfing the Great Lakes. If you really wanna try it, come out here to Nova Scotia... I'll teach you myself!

GoSurfing has never been to the Amazon. Or he would know that it is not "little bugs" but a small fish called the candiru.

The northward urethral swimming and penile amputation parts are correct, though.

One of the guys in my Motorcycle Club pulled the leash plug
out of his gun at Mavericks during a 35+ day. He said it's
the only time in his long/all over the world surfing career
that he was sure he was going to die.

We destroyed the board at our next bike rally to excize the
bad juju.

I'll stick to riding whatever is breaking lower than my
head at 36th on my Bob Miller 10'2" cheater board.

I've always dreamt of being a big wave surfer, but alas I live in land locked alberta. Going to Victoria this summer to take some more lessons.

The biggest wave I ever rode was about 8 feet or so, on the Upper Red Deer River in Central Alberta. Can ride it forever, or until a raft with 8 people runs you over like a school bus.

As credited above I saw the same thing "Pororoca - Surfing the Amazon" on the "FUEL" channel last year or so except with Carlos Burle (carlosburle.com). Very cool.

Also as mentioned above, the new "Riding Giants" can also be appreciated by non-surfers simply because it was made so well.
