"Now cut that out!"

2005-07-09 05:38:21 PM
Rep. Charles Rangel has written to lobbyists who represent corporate interests before the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, where he is the ranking Democrat, asking for contributions from $1,000 to $10,000 "to underwrite" his 75th birthday party.

He's a huge douchebag. If it wasn't for the fact that he's a veteran I'd have no respect for him at all.

And absolutely nobody at all on either side of the aisle is surprised by this in any way, shape or form. Rangel is pond scum.

This is a good example of why the whole lot of them need to be turned out in '06. I talking both sides of the aisle with the possible exceptions of Ron Paul from Texas and Dana Rohrbacher from California.

2005-07-09 06:17:20 PM
ksdanj: Dana Rohrbacher from California.

Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaa

The single biggest most hateful scumbag in all of our government and you would keep that slimy hatred filled douche?

You gotta be farking kidding me.

That guy is a complete asshole.

/lived in L.A. for 15 years

This is normal activity for politicians.

Hear-hear! Vote them out! All of them!

I noted Paul and Rohrabcher as possible exceptions because they've been the only two Republicans I've seen who have been willing to stand against Lott, Frist, Delay, Hastert, and Bush when it comes to questions regarding the proper role of the Federal government. I believe that decisions made at the state level are more likely to reflect the views of the people of that state and Paul and Rohrbacher are the only two Republicans that I've seen who've been willing to buck Bush and the DEA on the medical marijuana issue.

Since you've lived in Rohrbacher's district, I'm sure you're more attuned to his demeanor and character than I am.

100% federal funding of elections now

And you think this would lead to a different crop in office? Highly unlikely, the power structure would just find another way to siphon money to their favorites, and we'd end up with idiots like Fred Phelps on the tickets because they had enough wacko followers to meet the requirements for funding.

100% federal funding of elections now

Yeah, let's just remove that last incentive for elected officals to pretend to listen to us.

2005-07-09 07:02:40 PM
Wraithbane: And you think this would lead to a different crop in office?

Sure would. The vast majority (not sure the %) of House incumbents run unopposed, because they can scare off worthy candidates with ginormous war chests. There's a 90%+ incumbent winning percentage.

If I wanted to run against my local nitwit, I'd be up against a $4M war chest, with the ability for him to raise up to $12M additional in the face of a real challenge.

$16M dollars? I wouldn't have a chance. Subsequently, local parties tend to avoid such battles, and will only allow someone to run on their ticket if they start out self-funded.

More competition = better deal for the public. Works in capitalism, works in politics.

Isn't Novak in jail yet? Rangel's a scumbag, but isn't it a bit hypocritical for Novak to be writing anything that implies poor ethics or morals in others?

2005-07-09 07:57:23 PM
Check out the article on the same page about Congressman Harold Ford, Jr. (D) supporting the Kelo eminent domain decision.

Maybe some developer should start to build a hotel on Ford's home property.

/won't vote for Republicans, for sure
// now can't vote for the Democrat in this race

Typical money grubbing Democrat. Does this actually suprise you? Anyone?

2005-07-09 09:53:24 PM
that headline made sense until I read the name of the article's author... and then the better question came up:

Has ROBERT NOVAK no shame?

two people are going to jail for his ass, and he has the right to question anyone's ethics?

I know Rangel is a partisan blowhard, but considering recent events, it amazes me that Robert Novak hasn't hid under a rock yet!

I think rangel is the same guy who introduced that draft bill, in order to perpetuate the myth that the administration would start a draft in june 05. total scumbag.

I agree with you on Ron Paul. That guy is the only one, in my mind, that has a head on his shoulders in either house of Congress. You should stop by www.lewrockwell.com. He posts articles there sometimes.

I've always been fascinated by some of these long term senators or congressfolk. Some have been there since the 1960's, what's up with that.

I can see that maybe the president has a 40 year political career working his way up the ranks...

oh wait...

never mind.

100% federal funding of elections now

How about this instead: All campaign contributions go directly to the Federal Election Commission. Half the money goes directly into into a candidate's account, with the remaining half split evenly among all qualified candidates. (For a two-candidate race, this works out to a 75/25 split for every dollar donated.) A candidate can *only* spend the money that is in his account, and it can only be used for campaign expenses (no "become a candidate and get a redwood deck and hot tub"), with the record of all expenses made public in a timely manner.

In addition, drop all limits on campaign contributions (there's no real need, since a portion of each donation can be used by all candidates), and have the FEC report every individual donation above a certain amount, as well as all corporate and foreign donations of *any* amount. A candidate can only start accepting donations and start drawing money once they have entered the race, which would force them to state their intentions fairly early in the campaign, and all money that isn't spent by election day can help fund the election itself.

This way, only the people who want to contribute are "taxed" for the campaign -- which is fairer than taxing everyone *or* putting limits on donations -- and third parties would gain a voice that is drowned out by the two major parties.

Ok, just in case the point wasn't made clear by 10 previous posts, Rangel is a slimy ass shiatbird.

I remeber when the goddamn INS lost my citizenship papers, and I couldn't sign up for USMC because of it... I called Rangel's office for help and the secretary basically said that he has better things to do. So I contacted Sen. Schumer's office and the problem was straightened out. Schumer may be an attention whore but at least he responds his constituents' letters.

Oh by the way, Rangel likes to complain that there are too many minorities in the military. And he wouldn't help me join the military even though I am white.

Anyway, can we get a movement going for some sort of grassroots write-in opposition? This is disgusting.

These Republicans need to get their farking asses into gear and stop this petty larceny of the people.
