I was a senior at UR in the spring of 2004 when they tested this service (before "forcing" students to take it in the fall). It was a joke. Poor selection, didn't work on Mac, and you can simply stream the songs for free and create a playlist. Why would anyone bother buying them?

I'm not the submitter, btw.

With tuition costs rising shouldn't it be administrators' job to cut out waste?

2005-07-09 05:51:34 PM
Why would anyone want to rent music?

I don't want my songs to be held hostage by a monthly subscription fee

A host of companies, most notably Napster and Real, appear convinced that consumers will buy into the concept of renting their music.

Real? Not in this lifetime.

A host of companies are about to go bankrupt then.

I am a student at the University of Miami and I would be more inclined to use it if the songs were not DRM-protected.

2005-07-09 10:21:19 PM
I don't doubt it...
At Rochester Institute of Technology they were trying to shove this Cdigix crap down our throats :-/

No one I knew signed up for it, and no one I knew, knew anyone else that signed up for it... Miserable failure...

Plus why would any of us sign up for it when we get 10MB/s downloads off our DC++ hubs =)(Yes MegaBYTES per second)

2005-07-09 10:21:22 PM
Why would anyone want to rent movies? That's just nonsense!

2005-07-09 10:21:23 PM
Forget Napster. Even when Napster was big, I still got my music from Scour.net and Filequest.com. Both were way better than mp3.com, in term of selections with no ratio.

2005-07-09 10:21:59 PM
(on the other hand, the service can't suck, which it appears it does)

2005-07-09 10:22:01 PM
Tarded, and then retarded.

You got that right.

I don't understand; didn't we all learn from our parents that renting furniture or cars (e.g. leasing) was a waste of money? Why would you rent music? It's ludicrous.

2005-07-09 10:24:22 PM
No! Duh! Where'd you park your squad car, Dick Tracy?

/Probably wouldn't have added the lame quote had I not seen this movie the other day.

I refuse to buy a single song.

*pops open p2p*

I was at Best Buy to buy some cds, and I debated getting the new Motley Crue. Found it...my 25 dollar gift card wasn't enough. Got 3 AC/DCs instead.

Also...who would rent music. :-/ If I were to seriously spend money on music, it would be through iTunes. Real and Napster are effed. Omarion is probably crying because of their downfall. Pray for him.

2005-07-09 10:25:34 PM
I always thougth things are supposed to get better over time.

How is it that music sucks more and more by the minute and we are being asked to pay more or the same as in the past to only "rent" music that we can't even take with us as we wish.

/weeping

2005-07-09 10:26:30 PM
I should mention: I know people who use the Napster/Real services to listen to songs akin to radio, only to actually buy the songs from other services (iTunes Music Store or CDs, generally).

2005-07-09 10:26:51 PM
Whoops, I didn't pay my monthly bill and/or they didn't get my money! I guess I'll have to listen to no f*cking music AT ALL, until THEY get things sorted out. Hrmm, yes yes, I'm just going to WAIT for them to get their sh*t straightned out...

BWAH HAHAHA....... GASP .....

BWAHAHA HAHAHAAAAAAAAAAA!!

You mean RIGID? Or are there actually ridges on it? I've never personally see his C**K...

2005-07-09 10:32:13 PM
Napster's logic has always been flawed.

iPod + 10,000 songs to fill it from iTunes music store=$10,000.
Napster player + 10,000 songs to fill it=$10 a month.
iPod + 10,000 songs to fill it from old CDs, friends and P2P= NOTHING!!!

It's that last step they seem to have missed...

The one song they will break down and buy (I know because my friend's brother is totally one of these kids and he knows everything they are going to do before they do it because they plan everything out at tea parties and other cover up operations) is "There's A Tear In My Beer". There is a new version of it that is specifically about "JR" beer. I know this because I have been told by a member of the inner circle of this group and he has prior knowledge of their activities before the do them and fully execute the plan that they came up with before doing it. By it I don't me it it, but the activity or avoidance of activity pre determined by the group. I'm sure you knew that but some times immature people like to make "do it" jokes, or "doodie" (which sounds like duty in casual conversation), or pre mature someting or other. I feel as though I have now done my duty to America. (this is the point where many in the group would chortle, pointing out "He said doodie")

My last semester at Purdue, they rolled out Cdigix. I tried it...for about ten minutes. Piece of crap. If I remember correctly I couldn't use firefox, it had a horrible interface, didn't have anything I liked, and was sloooooooow. I can't think of anyone who used it for more than a few minutes.

Here's the deal: music companies don't want to release non-DRMed music. Consumers want to do whatever they want with what they purchased. I shouldn't have to fight a clunky interface and jump through hoops to listen to music.

Allofmp3.com is good (yeah, not really legal). Plenty of other places to download too. I'm not paying to stream music.

2005-07-09 10:43:16 PM
din38404, I'm sure they meant to refer to ribbed, not rigid or ridged...

2005-07-09 10:44:59 PM
I knew Napster was still around in some form or another, but never realised they rent out the music. I had just assumed it was like iTunes. Good god. No wonder they're losing money. what a stupid, stupid idea. Good riddance. The scum paid enough money to cash in on the Napster name, let them lose their shirts.

2005-07-09 10:45:14 PM
If Napster goes under, can consumers sue for their music? I don't think legally, but I would sure as hell be pissed!

2 entries found for ridged.
ridge Audio pronunciation of "ridged" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (rj)
n.

1. A long narrow upper section or crest: the ridge of a wave.
2. A long narrow chain of hills or mountains

Yep, I meant ridged. And yes, you're right about his penis probably looking like #2.

2005-07-09 10:52:09 PM
Kinda on-topic: I used to be an avid Winamp fan - still am - but once i got iTunes, it was kinda superfluous to have two programs that did the same thing, and I had to use iTunes anyway for my iPod. If Winamp did iPod support....farkin' sweet.
On-Topic: Fark Napster. Fark buying your music/renting music at all. LimeWire... What a sweet program.

That's what I do. It's even better in the Spring when Pepsi gives away iTunes songs. Listen to some stuff on Napster (which I wouldn't pay for, but I go to Penn State, so I already do...), then grab a Pepsi with a code and get it from iTunes for free.

Napster is like that chick who used to give you head for nothing, but now she wants you to take her to dinner first. Eff that.

unfortunatly the thing built into my philips to prevent piracy actually encourages it! Its DRM can only play mp3 files so I can't get them from any legit source (except cds, but soon that won't be legit) so I'm stuck using limewire

*snaps fingers* darn, how will I survive?

Seriously, though, I thought my University was bad about charging me for superflous crap that no one wants or uses. I really would NOT stand for the place to force me to pay for friggin napster.

I'm one of the "lucky" students at a Napster plagued school (Penn State). I do not know one person who has paid for music on Napster. Most people don't even realize you can buy music from it. I'm just glad the University isn't spending my tuition on this horrible idea. Hopefully it will be gone before I graduate.

2005-07-09 11:01:07 PM
Yeah, so all of our students use ipods, I got a great idea, let's make them subscribe to a music service that doesn't support ipods.

BRILLIANT!

What a lot of people REFUSE to admit is:

APPLE + IPOD is more monopolistic than microsoft ever was.

The IPOD hardware will only use the iTUNES service and the iTUNEs interface is CLOSED, and Apple is doing everything they can to keep things that way. There have been some hacks out there to make IPODS work with other formats and programs, but why is it that APPLE is allowed to get away with this behavior while everyone raises hell with microsoft? not to mention the hell that everyone raises about other music services too? Apple has been as vicious as microsoft ever was when it comes to this. And the apple zealots out there conveniently look over this fact. By no means do i approve of overly draconian DRMs and monopolistic behavior...but I hold EVERYONE accountable for thier behaviour (even Apple).

By the way...if you lose an iTunes song that you have purchased, through a hard drive crash or whatnot....too bad...its lost, even though Apple has receipt of the purchase. Napster will allow a redownload of any song you have purchased. Just one example among many that iTunes is less than perfect too.

2005-07-09 11:08:06 PM
Yep. Napster can suck it long and hard.

When I do buy music, I buy CDs (not often) or go through iTunes. I can't imagine "renting" a song.

2005-07-09 11:08:39 PM
I have a Creative Portable Media Center. I have 10gigs of my own CD's. I have another 10 gigs of stuff I've "rented" from Yahoo Unlimited (similar to Napster). Yahoo costs 7 bucks a month. Just like an IPOD, I can trade and add non-rented music without cost. For $7 a month, its nice to have 10 gigs of new music (even though its rented). IPOD users don't have nearly as much music options as I do.

2005-07-09 11:10:04 PM
h3dge: APPLE + IPOD is more monopolistic than microsoft ever was.

true.dat

We all saw what happened when real found a way into the ipod, apple patched it away quick as they could. Wonder how no companie has pressed for an anti-trust suit yet?
