'family orientated shopping'

sounds like 'kids dont have money, bring your parents that do'

they tried similar idea here, enforced trading hours restrictions at shopping areas (no 24hr shopping), so everyone went across the border, and the small town had a huge boost in night-trade

2005-07-09 07:34:02 AM
Ah yes. I've seen this happen before.

Drive out the kids, welcome only little old ladies and corresponding business (like a store that sells walkers and bedside commodes), act surprised when the little old ladies die off, then go out of business and have the mall razed.

2005-07-09 08:03:32 AM
Maybe they're at the library!

BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Seriously, though, I'm sure they're at the 4-H Club.

2005-07-09 09:35:34 AM
You know, the people that made the decision to limit times when teens could be in the mall are probably the most intelligent economic geniuses in all of the Midwest. Hell, they're probably the smartest people between Denver and Baltimore.

/lived in Iowa for a while
//actually got stupider

In a small-ish town called Lansdale they tried this in the mid 80s. My friend's father was the owner of a convience store. He freaked the fark out that they only imposed it in the summer when all the kids were out and about. During the school year you could have been out till 4am and the cops didn't care. Of course there weren't any kids out on a school night.
except me

I have been to Salina.. there is NOTHING in that area to do. It's Kansas, and truth be told, thats one shiatty state with nothing fun to do in it.
I am all for not letting these kids in the mall, i support this idea.

There is a nice mall near my house thats infested with idiot kids, fake thugs, and dirty hoodrats.. I won't go there because of the people.. and neither will a lot of folks.

Lisa McDowell, marketing director for Central Mall, said she thinks its too early to judge how the program is going.

I think any type of program requires more than two weeks to make a decision, McDowell said.

Sales throughout the mall have been down, McDowell said, and there could be a number of contributing factors, including the recent Fourth of July holiday and summer vacations.

Denial is the first step, right?

2005-07-09 01:45:03 PM
Its been three weeks since the mall started a pilot Youth Escort Program that prohibits those under 16 from being in the mall without a parent after 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Since that policy took effect, Kromer said, attendance at the theater has declined dramatically.

Are you listening RIAA? Are you paying attention MPAA? There's your customer base, in case you were wondering. Want to know why your sales are in a slump? Want to know why kids pirate movies?

Tick off your customers and they don't come back, that's why. Something this movie theater is learning the hard way.

This is Salina KS everybody, the town is full of redneck morans. Intelligence is the thing that area of the country needs most.

/went to KSU and KS has a stockpile of rejects from other states
//not proud
//slashes will rule the world

Malls all over are dying. Kids are the mainstay income for malls, spending mommie's money at Aberzombie and biatch. Kids don't hang out at the mall much anymore, not like they did in the 80's. Malls are being replaced by 'multi-use destinations' with overpriced luxury condos, Target and Starfarks.

2005-07-09 02:00:37 PM
Yeah, teenagers spend money at the mall. Maybe at the food court... Most normal humans avoid the mall during summer vactions because of all of the sullen brooding cretins that live there.

2005-07-09 02:01:02 PM
Holy cow!

What a bunch of morons!

2005-07-09 02:03:12 PM
I wonder if they noticed less empty packages laying around too?

2005-07-09 02:04:29 PM
Teenagers year olds should be on a dirt road drinking beer, driving drunk, and having sex for weekend fun. At least thats what we did for fun in central Kansas, ahh the good old days.

2005-07-09 02:04:31 PM
6pm? Does the sun go down early there or something? Why not dusk?

However, if the mall actually had something I wanted or at least wanted to look at (most shopping is online these days), then I'd be much happier shopping at the mall without the punkasses. I'm sorry that this is in Kansas and not near civilization.

2005-07-09 02:04:46 PM
When they outlawed cruising in my town some 20 years ago, the downtown died. They are still trying to bring it back.

2005-07-09 02:10:48 PM
I would drive my kids to the mall in the next town in protest. Dumbfarks.

2005-07-09 02:12:24 PM
Uh who goes shopping at the mall on Friday and Saturday night? I mean seriously what the hell were they thinking.

2005-07-09 02:12:33 PM
This is stupid, but not nearly as stupid as my local downtown mall which shuts at five and then wonders why the out-of-town shops kick it, and half why half of its units are empty. The also have a "Business College" [secretary school] taking up masses of space, which would be all very well if it hadn't just gone bust for the third time in a decade.

They Never have late shooping, even in advent, and even though there the nearest place with food to the theatre. Eeeeyoore. Eeeeyoore. Go back to managing a thistle patch, donkeys.

2005-07-09 02:14:35 PM
yeah teenagers are pretty scary, i'm glad i don't have to endure the stress of walking by them or having them look at me.

when i was a kid we went from 12 to 20 and we liked it goddamnit

/sarcasm

this is dumb they deserve to go bankrupt and kids should be shopping online even if it is for more corn and corn related accessories

2005-07-09 02:15:25 PM
I think it's a good idea. Too many kids selling chocolate covered pretzals, most likely.

/can't believe no one's referenced this yet...

2005-07-09 02:15:42 PM
My mall has a midnight curfew. Thank god for fake ids.

2005-07-09 02:16:06 PM
I'm happy just as long as those darn kids stay off of my grass.

2005-07-09 02:16:18 PM
We are a lot concerned,

And you should be too!

/WTFC?

2005-07-09 02:16:29 PM
corn??

2005-07-09 02:16:35 PM
I wonder what all of these kids are doing.

Hmmmmmmm...

I am betting there will be a surge at the maternity ward 9 months from now... all unwed teenagers.

Who's with me on this?

2005-07-09 02:18:29 PM
Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn, MI did this a couple of years ago, and ever since then business has SKYROCKETED>

I really love the auto-denial by mall management

"Lisa McDowell, marketing director for Central Mall, said she thinks its too early to judge how the program is going.
I think any type of program requires more than two weeks to make a decision, McDowell said.

Sales throughout the mall have been down, McDowell said, and there could be a number of contributing factors, including the recent Fourth of July holiday and summer vacations.

None, to me, have said they think their down sales are due to the fact that we have implemented the new program, she said.

So the theater manager says this is a problem, but the mall representative says no one thinks their sales are down? And how does a 7% slump in sales even remotely correlate to going from 700-800 patrons to 400 (somewhere between a 40% and 50% drop)?

I just love it when you bring management bad news... best Ostarich immitations I've ever seen (LMAO)

Oh, and Dr. Knockboots, you support this? Will you be happy when the state just takes children away when their born and raise them in state farms, because obviously most Amerikan parents can't be trusted to raise children? Please, take your fatal case of CRI (Cranium Rectitus Insertus) elsewhere.

2005-07-09 02:20:47 PM
A curfew is fine, but 6pm is a little extreme. At least it isn't the 4pm that my local mall has. I can't imagine this would do anything but choke off business. Too many shopping options now.

2005-07-09 02:21:17 PM
I hate it when they do things like this. It addresses the effect, not the cause of the problem. The most likely reason why the kids are hanging out at the mall is because there's nothing else to do. A lot of small towns and suburbs have this same problem. Hell, even some cities do. And you know what? when you give youth things to do, problems like drinking and crime actually drop!

I once went to Buffalo (I'm in Toronto) to help out a youth group at the Albright-Knox gallery there. The kids there seemed to be dying of boredom. They weren't allowed to go to the mall, they couldn't hang out on the streets, basically all they could do was play video games at home.

And, yeah, hasn't there been all these economic stats saying that "Generation Y" is where all the money is at? You'd think malls would be catering to these kids.

2005-07-09 02:21:39 PM
We are a lot concerned, Kromer said. I have sat here and marveled at the lack of teenagers coming to see movies.

This man is clearly a highly intelligent individual.

2005-07-09 02:23:58 PM
The Association Press contributed to this story.

oh, the Association Press. yeah, they're one of the big news orgs, just like Goiters and U.P.On.

/"Salina" rhymes with...

2005-07-09 02:24:51 PM
oh come on, ROBO - surely you realize by now that this is bread and butter for the Amerikan government now. Find a little tension, fan the bajeesus out of it until it seems like a raging inferno to the right group of people, then announce its a problem, tax the shiat out of us, and spend that money to supposedly solve the problem.

Hell, we ought to be used to it by now...

/wishes he was kidding...

2005-07-09 02:28:15 PM
6 pm for those younger than 16 is nothing... At the Walden Galleria in Buffalo, they're implementing a "No one under 18 after 4 pm without a parent or guardian" beginning in September...

2005-07-09 02:28:54 PM
You have a town full of bored teens looking for a excitement and a way to earn a little cash.

You have a bunch of bored senior citizens looking for a way to teach punk teenagers a lesson.

Result: senior paintball!

Pay teens to hang out unarmed in a mall-like environment wearing full body armor. Seniors pay to drive by on their little electric scooters and shoot paintballs at the hired unarmed teenagers. No one is bored. Everyone is happy.

It amazes me that no one has thought of this before...

2005-07-09 02:29:15 PM
All I know is that if you're a store owner it is beyond stupid to chase away anyone with large amounts of disposable income and poor impulse control.

2005-07-09 02:30:24 PM
I can't say I've ever lost sleep over teenagers running around the mall. I actually love it when kids show up and are bored, just roaming the mall. Our family owns a restaurant in a local one. Let them wander, come in, buy a drink or something. Step 3: Profit?

Well, seeing as how the only parallels between your reference and the story are the words "mall" and "teenagers," I'm afraid you'll just have to live with unfulfilled expectations in the pop culture reference department.

Spud Boy: Aberzombie and biatch.....Starfarks

*sigh*

Please stop this. Making up alternate names for corporations isn't funny unless you do it correctly (aMberzombie). The same goes for politics. Keep the "republitard" and "dumbocrat" insults locked in the basement along with "Sprawlmart", "K-mapart" and the rest of the half-baked insults.

Sorry, teenagers that hang around in malls for no reason DO NOT BUY ANYTHING. Sure, they might see a movie. But they go see the crappiest movies that Hollywood can shiat out. It's no loss.

I've just never understood going to a mall and doing nothing. Maybe I have a brain, that's why.

Candy - I was gonna type up something meaningful, but i like your idea a hell of a lot better. Senior paintball would rock. The winner gets control of the town.

Buy nothing? Are you out of your mind? Who buys video games? Who buys DVDs? Who buys all those crappy little t-shirts and pre-worn jeans? The last thing I did at 14 or 15 was go shopping with my parents. If I needed clothes, they gave me money and dropped me off. If I wanted DVDs, they dropped me off and I spent money I made painting houses and mowing lawns.

What do you think the only age group with 100% disposable income is? It isn't the twenty-somethings, it isn't senior citizens. It's the under 16 crowd. No gas money, car payments, no grocery bill, no tuition payment, no rent. But they do make money. And they do spend it.
