Damn...from the headline, I was hoping it was a fully armed construction vehicle. Or a new batmobile design.

S.Lanka clamps down on illegal arms -- with bulldozers

Honestly, is it really necessary to abbreviate Sri Lanka down to S.Lanka?

"If they hand over these weapons, we will not prosecute them."

"And if you leave us alone, we will not kill you."

Guns guarantee individual rights will be respected..

Without the ability to resist oppression, there is nothing left but tyranny..

Never bring an unarmed steamroller to a gun fight.

/that's now #26 on the list of rules for a gunfight

2005-07-09 03:37:12 AM
Is it just me or does it not make any sense to destroy unusable guns. "were mostly beyond repair, and had been sitting in police and army stores for years." May be they can go after working guns next, but that might cut into corupt officals bounus money..

2005-07-09 03:38:14 AM
So they destroyed guns that didn't work anyway.

Good use of money.

"...sending two bulldozers rolling over 32,000 rusty shot guns, rifles and handguns to drive its point home."

Yes, drive your point home by crushing rusty non-functioning weapons from the 1970s. That'll learn 'em!

2005-07-09 03:53:32 AM

wanted for questioning.

Symbolism over substance. Destroy non-functioning firearms...

/nothing to see here, move along.

2005-07-09 03:54:44 AM
I wonder how many of these guns had viable receivers, and just needed a new barrel or something. They might have made some decent imports.

Of course, the bad guys weren't using those weapons, as they were non-functional and locked up. Destroying them won't stop anything.

Taking arms away from law-abiding citizens never solved any problems, nor did it result in criminals not having access to arms, or indeed being less inclined to commit criminal acts.

/bought an M1 Garand today from the CMP
//also got a Trijicon Reflex II sight for my Kel-Tec SU-16B

2005-07-09 03:58:05 AM
These things are usless, you only get guns that would not be used any.

2005-07-09 03:58:36 AM
If they really want to drive their point home, they should be driving those steam rollers over convicted murderers starting from the feet on up. That would drive the crime rate down pretty damn fast.

After the bulldozing, Charlton Heston's cold, flat hands had to be amputated.

Oh god the guns D:

Please Sri Lanka, think of the AK47's.

2005-07-09 04:18:41 AM
Gee, that'll sure do a lot to reduce violence in the region. Maybe tomorrow they can rent out the steamroller to work on the damn roads?

Heypete:

-How did the CMP program work out for you? I've been considering purchasing a Garand, and CMP seems like a relatively cheap option for decent condition arms.

2005-07-09 04:24:42 AM
Nice p.r. move. You can get almost any type of arm you want in Sri Lanka. It is a good thing that weapons that probabally do not fire were turned in I guess.

Russian Kalshnikovs and the Chinese knockoffs are available, along with heavy machine guns, land mines, etc.

2005-07-09 04:27:08 AM
*sobs uncontrollably. Poor guns!

I know that it is spelled: "Kalashnikov." And yes, they are devastating at close range with unskilled folks.

rickandrak:

I only own two antique guns (both work fine). But I do know the M-16 and M-4 carbine from personal experience. No match if you are trained.

2005-07-09 04:43:32 AM
Just wondering. I saw news clips of police patrolling subways in American cities after the Londen bombings. Does anyone know if the cops use M-16's or the M-4 variant? From the quick shots I saw, they were not AR-15's (civillian model).

2005-07-09 04:47:34 AM
Looked like 16's to me. Anyone know? Just curious. I would prefer them to handle Heckler and Koch rifles, but they cost five grand a piece the last time I checked.

/Colt it is!

Would you see me coming with this?

I must say that the Germans still make some fine guns, from rifles, sniper rifles, and to the guns on the American battle tanks.

I have to guess this was a move to placate the US and British government. By destroying (bunch of) their 'old' guns, now it's a cinch that Sri Lanka will have to import thousands of new guns for their robust civil war.
/guess who will sell them said guns?

Don't forget the Chinese and Russian gun industries...nothing says cheap yet effective armament like a Norinco AK.

Noooooo! You know not what you're doing! When that M1 shows up, do not take it out of the box. Send it directly to me if you wish to avoid the painful affliction Garanditis. This horrible disease will leave your wallet permanently empty!

State_College_Arsonist:

If you talk to Garand collectors the advice will almost always be unanimous: CMP is the way to go. They're a non-profit organization devoted to improving civilian marksmanship. Naturally they're going to get you a good gun. All the CMP rifles I've seen have been gorgeous and functioned well. If you have any problems, or are unsatisfied, CMP's customer support is very highly regarded and will try to make things right for you.

Far as I know, Police use the M-4s...the biggest difference: the M-16 is a full-length rifle, M-4 is a shorder carbine model. That's as far as I know, anyway

2005-07-09 10:40:51 AM
Clamping down on illegal guns? That's un-possible!

I think cops use the MP5.

Another difference I've heard about the M-4 vs M-16 is the M-4 doesn't jam as often.

gun info/facts:

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ground/m16.htm

"The M4/M4A1 5.56mm Carbine is a lightweight, gas operated, air cooled, magazine fed, selective rate, shoulder fired weapon with a collapsible stock. A shortened variant of the M16A2 rifle, the M4 provides the individual soldier operating in close quarters the capability to engage targets at extended range with accurate, lethal fire. The M4 Carbine achieves over 80% commonality with the M16A2 Rifle and will replace all M3 .45 caliber submachine guns and selected M9 pistols and M16 rifle series.

time to load up my ma-duece(M2)and take it to the range.
and if any one has a problem with it on my way to the range i will put it on its pintle mount and introduce you to the muzzle flash of a firing round

Mmm, PSG1. H&K makes a fine rifle. (Oddly enough, I still prefer Glock pistols)

I can't decide between a Ruger 10/22 or the .17HMR for a varmint rifle though... Farker opinion?

JohnnyC:

Some police do use MP5s, but they also, including the LAPD, carry M-4s. The difference between LOTS of 9MM cartridges with very little penetration overall (FBI rates the 9mm at 64%...as in, of all the cases in which a 9mm was used against a person, it only stopped them in 64% of the cases vs. 94% for the .45 ACP and .40 S&W) and an accurate carbine/automatic with higher penetration. (Then again, I'm an AR-10 fan... .308 vs. 5.56MM/.223 Remington) Different applications, but both used.

Twinspool:

I've tried Glocks and H&K, but in each case, I could never get used to them. The H&K pistols are just too wide and chunky for me to really get excited about, and the Glock grip angle keeps forcing my aim high. Give me a good ol' M1911A1 .45 ACP any day.

Then again, the Springfield XD has every benefit of the Glock with the same grip angles and comfort of the M1911A1...
