that article was less than useless
if that's possible

Sleep in a graveyard, and see if that really works?

MY NEW BOYFRIEND SNORES SO FARKING LOUD THAT OTHER PEOPLE AT THE CAMPGROUND COMPLAINED!

My dad had sleep apnea so bad that he had several mini-strokes before he got his CPAP machine. I thought my da was the world's loudest snorer, but Joshua puts him to shame. I had to go out and buy silicone ear plugs for my son and I for our camping trip over the holiday weekend. Then the people in adjoining tents complained so I gave over my extras!

I told him if he wants to actually sleep in my bed, he's going to have to have a sleep study and get a CPAP. I know he's got sleep apnea because he stops breathing for long periods of time. Silly bastard.

Going to go RTFA now...

I need to have a sleep study done, i wake my SO up all the time, had to buy her ear plugs, all that. I wonder if i can just skip the cpap can get surgery. I dont want anything strapped to my face when i sleep.

Solved by a swift bony elbow applied to the ribcage, and/or wax ear plugs, those suckers really work, they even blocked out the throbbing bass lines during my neighbours summer party recently.

/hehehe, I said throbbing

I can't sleep. Clowns we eat me.

In the useless spirit of the article, I'll add some more tips.

You can also avoid snoring by:

Not sleeping
Not snoring

I smoke and drink and I'm about 20 lbs overweight, so I snore.

Breathe right strips across the nose work for me.

Yep, my wife snores so loudly I can hear her even after I move to the 2nd bedroom. Earplugs do work wonders. I've gotten to the point where I can't sleep without them, even if I'm not with my wife (business trips, etc.).

2005-07-07 10:47:40 AM
I bought an ear plug sampler pack from the ear plug superstore (no shiat). It may well have been the best purchase I've ever made. These things have been a godsend.

Never let anyone tell you a woman can't snore as loud as a man.

Many people with sleep apnea have obstruction of their airways when they lie flat on their backs that clears when they're on their side. A recent European study had the patients sew a tennis ball into the back of their pajama tops, this made it uncomfortable to sleep on their backs and their symptoms remarkably improved.

Yesterday I had a 400-pounder sitting next to me on the plane. He snored, slurped, and gurgled the entire way from NC to Detroit.

Those $300 Bose noise canceling headphones are starting to look real good.

As for surgery, my fiance had it and it didn't take. The surgery has a history of being about 50% effective in about 50% of patients. Wish they told us that before!

I did just hear something about a woman who developed a singing technique to strengthen your soft palette on NPR the other day.

Ear-plugs might help you, but if your SO has sleep apnea, they need to get treated for it.

They look like tiny missiles. Tiny orange EAR missiles.

CPAP, especially the kind which warms the air first, completely cured my stepdad's sleep apnea and associated symptoms (snoring, poor sleep, waking up feeling beaten, etc). Highly recommend it.

That stuff didn't work for Trek_Nerd ten years ago, why would these lame things work now? Jeez.

It's so loud in our house that you can hear him outside. I have learned to tune him out, but sometimes he still wakes me up. He even tried one of these mask thingies and that didn't work.

Next he's going to get a nose job, because his doc thinks it's due to the fact that his nose was smashed when he was little and wasn't fized properly, and now it's falling down pretty badly.

2005-07-07 04:02:48 PM
What an informative, exhaustively researched article!

On a less sarcastic note, there's a store near where I used to live that's called "Precision CPAP." Although, if you're not looking closely, the big red-and-white sign looks like it says, "Precision CRAP."

2005-07-07 06:21:09 PM
No smoking or pre-sleeping alcohol? Why don't you just shoot me now?

2005-07-07 06:21:30 PM
WTF was that?

2005-07-07 06:21:47 PM
I snore minorly because I have a deviated septum. I'd get it fixed, but frankly I'm cash poor because I just bought a big old Victorian house in a nice neighborhood in a hot housing market.

2005-07-07 06:29:04 PM
I just had a sleep study done over the weekend, and got the results yesterday. Definitley sleep apnea. I stop breathing ~45times per hour, and the doc said it doesn't seem to make a difference whether I am on my back or on my side.

Now, I get to go back for another sleep study to get "fitted" for a CPAP machine (will make more sense to most people than saying "get titrated")

I guess this explains why I wake up feeling like I have been in a drunken barfight (underwater) all night, and I never remember having any dreams. I wonder if my ADD will improve any with apnea treatment.

2005-07-07 06:30:40 PM
I wake the dead. The DW leaves and the kids close their doors. Had the test, no SA.

2005-07-07 06:31:15 PM
I meant to say --Hey, look, a bunny!
but I forgot to. I guess I got distracted.

2005-07-07 06:31:36 PM
Just about the only way to fix snoring is with a breathing machine. You wear a mask and the machine applies positive pressure to help you breathe. You have to learn to sleep on your back and you have to have a prescription.

My wife has accepted that ear plugs are the second best appliance to bring to bed.

If you snore: they mention, in passing, a "sleep study", this can be very important. It is to rule out sleep apnea. People with sleep apnea can suddenly die in their sleep from suffocation. LINK

2005-07-07 06:36:22 PM
barncook

I have a BiPAP and I still sleep on my side. You just have to get used to this big plastic thing blowing air up your nose all night. I just think about the alrenative and go right to sleep... Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty. My dad had it and wouldn't wish it on his worst enemy.

2005-07-07 06:36:34 PM
Seriously...look into the sleep apnea angle. My hubby has it and since he got his C-PAP, I can finally sleep in peace. He went from constantly sawin' the logs...to silence.

2005-07-07 06:36:48 PM
I hope people posting this nonsense to fark also die suddenly from suffocation.

2005-07-07 06:38:57 PM
barncook, my husband sleeps on his stomach with the big plastic thing sending air up his nose...he says it was tough for a little bit, but he can pretty much sleep however he wants. He's quiet no matter how he sleeps and believe me he sleeps in some pretty crazy positions.

...Going to go RTFA now...

Your post was more informative than the article.

My husband says I snore "like a busted chainsaw". I couldn't be more proud... ;-)

Also, nothing in that article was useful or new information. Thanks. :-P

2005-07-07 06:41:39 PM
So, umm, what's a CPAP? And a BiPAP?

/didn't RTFA

I went for months with very poor sleep and apnea-type symptoms, turns out the problem was caused by a polyp up my hooter.

One incredibly distressing operation later (tip to all nose op patients - when they remove the packing from your nose donlt immediately breath out through the nostrils - two three feet long spurts of blood from tehnasal cavities - i kid you not - I thought the nurse was gonna die!!) and the problem is 99% gone.

Remaining 1% covers heavy nights out drinking followed by enough noise to rattle the windows in the bedroom :)

2005-07-07 06:45:09 PM
I used to rattle the walls with my snoring. Had my tonsils taken out last November - my hubby says the snoring is now completely gone.

yeah.

2005-07-07 06:46:18 PM
Good article contents, poorly written.

Assuming no sleep apnea is involved, Weight, aging, and booze are the big three causes. You can't do anything about your age, so drop the pounds and only sleep with your SO when you ain't been drinkin'.

Surgical procedures are the big lie. No lasting relief can be obtained, and the procedures are painful.

Dental appliances sometimes help. In my case, a dental appliance worked PERFECTLY, as in downshifting-dump-truck-sound before, summer-breeze-sound after.

2005-07-07 06:46:27 PM
I want to get paid to write worthless non-articles.

Sleep studies/Cpap do work. One of the few medical things they push that actually help people (as opposed to just making another drug company & doctor filthy rich).

They need to make a CPAP that runs on batteries or stored solar so we can go camping again :-(

2005-07-07 06:47:32 PM
I drink before I go to sleep, and I smoke, and I snore.

But I WANT to snore, that way I can be more productive and piss of my GF even when I am sleeping. It helps, I wake up without the earge to make crude comments, or pull her hair.

2005-07-07 06:47:58 PM
I snore loudly. This has led to girls I share my bed with either ignoring it and dealing with it (and saying it was "cute"), or waking me up and biatching at me.

I've learned to use my snoring as an indicator of which ones make suitable long term mates.

2005-07-07 06:48:44 PM
It's when my butt snores that causes distress.

2005-07-07 06:49:19 PM
Sometimes earplugs aren't enough! :(

I eventually made my husband (with threats of great bodily harm) go to the doctor. He couldn't tolerate the CPAP no matter what style mask, had his septum straightened and eventually had throat surgery (but not after I went through a similar surgery for my tonsils ;P)

I had never slept so good as after his surgery and I'm quick to smack him in the head when he snores (bad sleeping position).

Unfortunately, sometimes the surgery doesn't work for folks and i feel for y'all. Just kill the offender and claim insanity from lack of sleep.

2005-07-07 06:49:26 PM
I snore so loud I wake myself up.

2005-07-07 06:51:43 PM
You can't sleep on the couch...

...the cat's already claimed it.

I've been using a CPAP for a year and I'm only 30.. it really does work, and there's millions that are affected by apnea.. yeah it sucks wearing a device (and hitting the insurance premium every other year for replacement parts), but it really does work.. sometimes it comes to my advantage when I only have to sleep 4-5 hours a night during the week because I sleep so deeply, meanwhile my wife is all groggy in the morning.

"can't believe the article didn't even mention a CPAP machine.. don't waste your money on a dental device if your snoring is really bad, it won't work, you'll just spit it out during the night"

How did snoring get so bad in humans? Its so disruptive to the snorer and their family that it puts them at a genetic disadvantage that I figured would be weeded out long ago. Is there some advantage? Does it keep the bears or other animals away at night?

2005-07-07 06:52:25 PM
My snoring been compared to a semi truck's engine brake.

It is on my list of "things to investigate when I have the time and money", right after laser vision correction.

2005-07-07 06:53:01 PM
Has anyone ever had a sleep study done and found out they DON'T wake up 40 times an hour?

Just curious.

2005-07-07 06:56:56 PM
Phink Phloyd

It wasn't in TFA... CPAP/BiPAP are machines that blow air into the nose and keep the soft tissue from collapsing and causing a wearer to snore or stop breathing. CPAP is "Constant Positive Air Pressure" and BiPAP is "Bilevel Positive Air Pressure". BiPAP lowers the air pressure on the exhale. They are used when the air pressure required is so high, exhaling against it is uncomfortable. By the way, the pressure is measured in cmH2O, the only place I have ever seen pressure measured this way.

My money would be that snoring is a side effect of having a larnyx designed to make sounds, and optimized for language. That or an effect of peoples' faces getting shorter, like a lack of enough room for wisdom teeth.

My first method: deaf in left ear, roll over and ignore.

Second: Poke his nipple.
