I've been playing Raiden III at the local game center. I was incredibly annoyed to see that the purple bendy death ray is now green and no longer locks on to things. Dammit.

They've also added guided missiles, that move left and right as you do, somewhat.

Those two changes, plus 3d rendered backgrounds, are all the changes they made. Other than those, it still plays just like the older games

Well, there goes my morning. Thanks a lot, submitter.

This is one of the best games ever. I remember playing this in the arcades when I was a kid... and I still love that purple death ray... purple death ray and homing missiles... Aiming? Whats aiming?

Good waste of an hour....

Scored 4,000,000+ without loosing a life

How the hell did that guy reach level 12?
The game ended on me after I beat the level 9 base....

Xevious was a sweet game back in the old NES days

icy_one: Damn, Ikaruga kicked my ASS.

Ikaruga kicks many asses, period. On my best day I could barely get past level 3.

I'm ashamed of my lack of skizzlez.

Now, this guy needs to add planes like the Ixion and Aegis Mk. IV and then we're talking.

If there's anything in this world or others awesomer than the Purple Bendy Energy Ray Of Death, I don't want to know about it.

Yes, its easy until your real boss comes in and you pause while battling a boss (a different one). Then the "enter" key doesn't work reliably to resume the game and when you finally reenter the game you are toast because you aren't expecting it, and in the confusion you lose a handful of ships.

Poor saps, worrying about bosses! The nearest my boss usually gets is 25 miles.

/home office rocks

Does anyone have any links or information on finding other version of these types of games to play. I can't seem to find any decent ones for console systems. I've been trying to find Raiden 2 but It doesn't seem to be available anywhere.

The PBEROD is very much the awesomeness. But this game's a joke even on Medium - I ran through 13 levels, over 6 million points, and just quit when I got bored of it.
Hard is much more like playing an actual game.

And what's with the incredibly ghey 5th level? With the ultra-lame cutscene leading in, and the boss that's continually got its dong pointed at you?

The game ended on me after I beat the level 9 base....

Down at the bottom of the screen there should be an option to continue.

Torus Trooper. A most kickass shooter coded in D. My friends and I used to play it and another game in class all the time. Shame I can't remember the totally insane one we did play. Had what looked like a gundam on the second level.

Bah. Causes Firefox to lock up under OS X. Won't even recognize when I click "New Game", just keeps showing background shiat.

Best I've done om Raiden II without continuing was 1-1 to 4-3.

With 8 credits I got to 9-6, anyone know how many missions there actually are?

2005-07-01 01:05:49 PM
That game is the best farking ever!!!

Arrow keys for movement bring new meaning to the words Carpal Tunel Syndrome. I had to quit around level 7. I should install my gamepad.

Anyone remember 1942? 1943 was popular, but 1942 had the famous Moras Code music. Yes, it was a series of short and long beeps... non stop...

Uh oh, a thread for gaming nerds. All your base are belong to me.

2005-07-01 01:49:48 PM
I kicked the crap out of this on newgrounds. Beat the whole thing with ten lives left, though i did get 2 1-ups.

Didn't even die against the final boss.

Though it's not a top-scroll shooter...

Bangai-O. Best Shooter. Ever.

...only because maxing out it's superweapon was directly proportional to how deep in shiat you managed to get yourself into.

/games like that and Katamari Damacy still give me hope about the industry

If you want real electronic shoot-em-up crack, try rRootage. And prepare to sweat like a maniac,

shootthecore.com. Links to lots of PC shmups. Be prepared to "translate this page" when following some of the links.

Games you shouldn't have too much trouble finding at your local game store:

Castle Shikigami 2 (PS2)
Ikaruga (GC)
R Type Final (PS2)
Gradius V (PS2)

...and that's pretty much it, unless you care to use ebay, break the law, or buy imported consoles/games. Most of these games never reach the states, and those which do go out of print quickly (and often are slapped on a god damn PS2 hostile CD, the farkers... if Metal Slug Worthless and Slightly Less Worthless were released on DVD, why not Gradius V?!?).

Yes there are twelve levels. Don't quit after the first cut-scene.

proud to say i beat ikaruga on my dreamcast way back in the day when i figured out how to burn dreamcast games. that game was pretty hard. they need to make more hard games i hate games now a days when you can continue as much as you want and there all easy and junk

2005-07-01 06:39:57 PM
After 9 levels, if I click "Continue" like some of you have instructed, the game just starts over from Stage 1.

2005-07-01 07:52:17 PM
charlycrash

rRootage! Maybe that's why I thought this game was so easy...I've been toughened up by all the rRootage.

Seriously, I beat normal on one life. This game == easy.

2005-07-02 12:13:17 AM
I just played rRootage for the first time. I passed levels 1 &2, so I skipped to the final level. I beat about 6-7 styles of bosses before I died. I find it amusing how the game slows down, as if a lot of things on the screen could really slow down a computer of today's speed.

2005-07-02 05:23:34 AM
Ah yes, this sure does bring back memories. I was lucky enough to find a copy of The Raiden Project for the Playstation a few years back. I was never that excited about Raiden, but boy did its sequel ever surpass my expectations. That's the game that first introduced the purple lightning beam to the series, and you can see how frickin' cool THAT is... 'nuff said.

I'm just wondering how the designer managed to pull off that effect in FLASH of all things... it looked like he spent 50% of his time figuring out how to duplicate the purple lightning beam and about 5% drawing the backgrounds.

Level12? How about Mission 12 then?!

I'm playing the game that wouldn't die... I got as low as 10 lives then worked back up to 15+ again. Sheesh! I just don't know how much more of this I can take!
