If the fractures really do exist, and many historical buildings are located on them, they must not be that unstable, else the historical buildings wouldn't have been around long enough to become historical--they would have become rubble.

The other half will be partly sunny, with highs in the upper 80s. Chance of rain 40%.

Can we just code it so Pravda articles automatically get Satire tagged and have done with it?

Any russian farkers able to help me out on this one?

I have been wondering for a while, is this Pravda a direct decendent of the original party Pravda, or just someone capitalizing on the name?

2005-06-30 10:40:30 PM
Perhaps "Pravda" is russian for "The Onion"

If I had to guess, its the same Pravda that Stalin was editor for, all those years ago (think he was editing it before he came into power in the early 20's? not sure...just was reading a bit about old S. a few days ago)

ah, tradition ;-)

its the same pravda... pravda means truth. for the longest time it was just a tool of the kgb/communist party, sort of the way the new york post and fox news is...lol
is that godwin'd?
anyway, i've been to russia, as a foreign exchange student. put it this way, i would rather get my news from pravda than fly airoflot(sp, in english looks silly)

mathmatix: airoflot(sp, in english looks silly)

No need for silliness. That's Aeroflot, already transcribed into English (for half a century or so), same as any international airline. Kind of surprising you never saw the name in English before. We even used to joke about it in high school in the early 80's. Plus, they put the name up in non-Cyrillic script at any airport at any (non"Cyrillic") airport they fly to.

Crown Of Negativity

Perhaps "Pravda" is russian for "The Onion"

Alas, no. I once suggested this, and was shot down. Then I suggested it was the Russian equivalent of the Onion, which as everyone knows is the Beet, but that, too, was debunked. Note, however, that both Onions and Beets do grow underground, which makes me suspicious of this particular story.

/Since I took Russian for a day in high school, I really do know what "Pravda" means, so all you experts can lay off.

God, am I tired of people posting pictures and then putting an "/obscure?" tag at the end. Is that the new cliche?

What's worse is that half of them are immediately self-evident. The other ones aren't, and no one cares enough to follow up, so who knows what they were?

Just attach a clever line or something to identify the thing and quit being so clever.

2005-07-01 12:21:16 AM
Using decent Photoshops is one thing, but this looks like piss-poor Soap job. Nice to see that Pravda is as professional and credible now as it was in the seventies...

halfmast trousers
yeah honestly i never had... my russian teacher in high school used to tell us about his one trip on aeroflot... still one fo the funniest things i remember about high school....
my russian teacher standing in front of a full class, basically saying if you fly aeroflot, you die....lol
yet the irony was he was standing there in front of us telling us.....lol

I agree, posting an "/obscure?" tag after a pic is lame.

And annoying.
