(Some Guy)   Theaters just enjoyed the worst weekend since 1985. Hard to believe with Batman, Herbie and Bewitched all on the big screen at the same time   (eonline.com) divider line 408

Good. Perhaps they will start to realize that people are tired of having to take out a loan to go to see a shiatty movie.

Oh, who am I kidding? They'll just blame it on piracy.

"It was the 18th straight down weekend, passing the dubious record set in 1985 as the longest slump since trackers began keeping detailed tabs on the minutiae of weekend grosses."

That just means that for 18 weeks, the total revenue has declined every week. It doesn't say anything about the actual dollar value of the revenue, and it certainly doesn't say "worst weekend since 1985."

I saw "Batman Begins" Friday, and it was actually very good. Much better than that obnoxious brain rot that passed for the last couple of efforts.

2005-06-27 08:58:39 AM
Yeah, "Batman Begins" was an exception. The rest of the drek...it's all remakes and attempts to suck the last bit of marrow from rotten corpses.

2005-06-27 11:25:11 AM
Maybe now they'll get the picture that their prices are too high?

Yeah, right. And in other news, pink elephants took over the White House this morning...

2005-06-27 11:31:15 AM
I went to see star wars for the fourth time sunday (yea, I know, I know).

I thought it would be on its way out by now. It was packed to the gills.

Take that, haters.

When such movies don't do well, you just know it's because of P2P.

After all, why watch one of these movies when you can see fansubbed anime from Japan?

2005-06-27 12:14:20 PM
Well this is what happens when Hollywood has to take all of its ideas from best-selling books. Here's a question...
Can you name a movie that was better than the book it was based on?

I certainly can't.

2005-06-27 12:49:20 PM
Oh, don't get me started.

OK, I'll start.

A couple of months ago, I went with my husband and two kids to see a matinee. The movie: Ice Princess *shudder*. After 4 tickets, two kid-sized popcorns, two kid-sized drinks, and a small Pepsi, the bill was $50. Keep in mind I don't live in a major city (near Dayton, Ohio). I hate to think what would have happened if we went at night. Or got a box of Candy. Or if I was thirsty.

2005-06-27 12:59:01 PM
I wouldn't even mind paying the prices, if it included public execution of anyone whose cell phone rang.

2005-06-27 01:07:59 PM
You know the poor revenue is because of those millions of thieves out there watching Batman, Herbie and Bewitched on their computer monitors all at the same time. I'm waiting for the Supreme Court to outlaw broadband.

2005-06-27 01:08:39 PM
armybottom- I can't personally confirm this, but I have heard that the Forrest Gump movie was better than the book.

2005-06-27 01:08:39 PM
First non-TF post?

Batman Begins was a good film and shouldn't be lumped in with, well, anything.

2005-06-27 01:08:57 PM
Ah.. the joys of having several friends in the movie theater business..

/hasn't paid to see a movie in years
//gets free popcorn and soda too
///just as long as I bring a cup and garbage bag

2005-06-27 01:10:01 PM
////help my TotalFark expired and I'm too broke until the 1st to restore it! sponsership, anyone?!

2005-06-27 01:10:41 PM
With Batman Begins playing, I thought I would be able to catch Mr. & Mrs. Smith less crowded late at night. I was wrong. And somebody brought in a crying baby.

/still bitter

armybottom -

the godfather
goodfellas (based on wiseguy)
the last temptation of christ
a clockwork orange
sideways
and the most obvious, Jaws

i am sure there are a lot more movies, that are better than the book on which they were based.

2005-06-27 01:11:56 PM
Where's the list of remakes someone posted last week? When will our entertainment industry get a clue?

2005-06-27 01:12:12 PM

Saw it Yesterday. Definitly not a dissapointment to any Zombie fan.

2005-06-27 01:12:41 PM
How about Hunt for Red October? I thought it was slightly better than the book.

/Saw Land of the Dead
//Wasn't impressed, sadly
///Did like Batman though
////Hooray for slashes!

2005-06-27 01:12:57 PM
This must be the fault of those evil pirates that are distributing the movies on the internet

ReverendMediocre: Ah.. the joys of having several friends in the movie theater business..

I hear ya. Back during high school, my mom's friend owned one of those smaller 6 or 7 screen theaters, and for about a year and a half I (and usually other friends) got to see free movies, with free popcorn and soda, for a whole year. Later he sold the theater and that ended.

Funny, I can have sex down at the morgue with the same arrangement.

2005-06-27 01:14:19 PM
Batman was farking awesome. Everyone should go see that movie.

2005-06-27 01:14:30 PM
This was the first weekend in about a year that I've been to a movie. It must be all my fault. :(

Anyway, Batman Begins was a great movie that was more about who Batman is and why he does what he does than a comic book action movie for kids. It was really good and worth venturing out of my cave.

they could have advertised a "batman" movie and instead played informercials for florida real estate for an hour and a half, and it would still have been better than joel schumacher's batman movies.

Blade Runner (or Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep). Granted the movie was only loosely based on the book, but in this case it turned out to be a good thing.

2005-06-27 01:15:22 PM
Hey, all you farker out there still going to the theatre, I got a secret for you. DVDs. They are going to be huge. I mean a movie inyour own home. Huge, I say.

1) Bums suck

2) .. I just can't be bothered going on with this.

What that dude said. Sounds to me like the MPAA is trying to make everyone think that their sky is falling so they can blame the internets.

/yet another crappy hollywood sequel - chicken little 2

What is this DVD you speak of? Laserdiscs, man... that's the future right there!

The Exorcist
The Exorcist III: Legion
Fight Club
Ghost World

I could probably think of a few more if I wanted to spend any time at it.

I hate going to the theater, and now with the only 2 month delay before new releases are out on DVD why go at all ?

I hate going because...

1) Asshats talking.
2) WAY TOO LOUD. We usually bring earplugs. Volume must be set for iPod addled kids.
3) Expensive, taking my whole family costs several times more than the DVD will. Wy not buy the DVD and watch it as many times as you like?

2005-06-27 01:18:19 PM
I wonder what movies came out in the summer of '85? Anyone know or do I have to google it myself?

2005-06-27 01:18:23 PM
Gawd, here it comes...

"I hate going to theatres, too expensive, and too many kids"

"I have a super duper home theatre system, I'll just stay home and watch my DVD's"

"Hollywood just keeps recycling crap, they've run out of ideas."

We get it...

It's because they're out watching the original versions of those movies.

Maybe not... just saying...

It's those dang kids and their internets, I tells ya!

Quick! Wire some senators some money! We need another law or something.

Wonder Boys. I love Michael Chabon, but I honestly thought the movie--character development, scene inclusions/exclusions, etc.--was way better than the book.

I helped contribute to this.

first time in a long time - hell, maybe ever - that i've actually gone and seen a movie at the theater two weekends in a row. definitely first time i've seen a movie at the theater three out of four weeks.

Farkistani Man, Beta killed laserdiscs!

I'd like to put a fish sandwich under the seat in Herbie, and then park him in the sun for a couple of days

2005-06-27 01:19:56 PM
Everyone's still smoking cigarettes from the final Star Wars climax.

2005-06-27 01:20:07 PM
Theaters just enjoyed the worst weekend since 1985. Hard to believe, with Batman, Herbie and Bewitched all on the big screen at the same time
But surely those films will mainly be shown in cinemas, leaving theatres to continue to show plays and musicals.

I'm off to watch march of the penguins tonight.

who wants to bet it is going to be a much better movie than anything else out right now?

This is an indicator of the impending revolt against the famous people. Soon the streets of Hollywood will run red.
