Flying Chilieans? That's just crazy! I mean, Columbia, its got the cocaine. Argentina's got all those smart (but crazy) nazi's. Brazil's got those pornstars giving our USA pornstars AIDS. But Chili? Its got nothing. Maybe a few aboriginal tribes and rainforests, but that's it. Before you give your goobers airplaines, you might want to show them how to put on pants.

BTW, why not sell for backward farks some old WWI bi-planes and tell them its the next-generation fighter aircraft. Then, tell Argentina that Chili said something bad about their mom, and bang, shows over!

Chilean president Ricardo Lagos has forwarded parts of the book to the Argentine foreign ministry.

The book alleges Chile provided intelligence in return for half-price military aircraft.

Wow that's really weak. If I was an Argentinian vet... I'd be mighty peeved.

EXCELLENT Izzard reference!

In other news:

Many of us in Chile already knew that. This is not news. You could talk to any "cabeza cuadrada" ("jarhead") in Chile and know this. (Well, except for the llama thing.)

The most fun thing in the world is watching the news in Chile when it comes to the Falkland Islands. Everybody in Latin America refers to them as Las Islas Malvinas, but the Chileans still call them Las Islas Falkland, just to piss off the argentinos. God, I miss Chile.

Politically, I think that this was a bad move. I believe in openness between neighbor countries and all, but there will be nothing good to come of this, because Argentina will be angry with Chile rather than Pinochet, who isn't around to be blamed anymore.

I think that this should have been a private conversation between Lagos and his Argentine counterpart, but I guess since this was part of a book that was being published anyway, it was bound to come out sooner or later.

What Chile should have done was tell Argentina they didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning against a NATO supported Britain.

First of all -- Columbia is a University. COLOMBIA is a country.

Second -- Chile doesn't have rainforest. Chile's climate is exactly like the North American west coast, from Baja California to Southern B.C.

Third -- The Chilean government (before the socialist movements) pretty much put the indigenous populations on reservations and on the political back burner. Only lately are the Chileans starting to appreciate the Aymara and Mapuche cultures.

Fourth -- You're an idiot who needs a passport and just a little intellectual curiosity.

One of my best buds in Chile was a helicopter mechanic in the FACh (Chilean Air Force). One day we were talking about the FACh and I asked him about the planes. He said they have a bunch of F-5's. I said, "Can't you buy some F-15s or 18s?" He started laughing his arse off and said, "If we sold all of our planes, and all of our tanks, and then had a national telethon, we might have enough money to buy ONE F-18."

Then again, you don't need all that military might when you're not pissing off the whole world. AHEM! Chileans only like to "sacar pica" with the Peruvians, Bolivians, and Argentinos. Our gubment feels secure enough to take on the whole world.

2005-06-26 02:20:46 AM
Even if Chilie did not supply intelligence, there is no way Argentina would have deated the UK anyway. They lost... get over it. Far greater countries have lost wars to Jolly Old England, no shame in Argentina losing too.

Unfreakable,

Hey! When were you in Chile? I've only been to Vina (yeah, I don't know how to do tildes in Unicode) once. I lived in Southern Chile; mostly Coyhaique and Valdivia. I dream about Chile almost every night.

Way back in 1988. I was supposed to go with a friend from there, but he bailed out at the last second, so I went alone and stayed with his family and friends, virtually none of whom spoke more than one or two words of English. I played soccer at Playa Renaca and spent a lot of time downtown.

Pinochet was still in office, and military-looking carabineros were on many corners with machine guns.

No its not. Prove it. Dont' post unless you know what you're talking about. There are professional reporters, politicians, and sanitation workers that read the postings here. Your lies here will misinform them

Second -- Chile doesn't have rainforest. Chile's climate is exactly like the North American west coast, from Baja California to Southern B.C.

Get a map. Chili is a rain-forest country, that's what the Greenpeace website says.

Third -- The Chilean government (before the socialist movements) pretty much put the indigenous populations on reservations and on the political back burner. Only lately are the Chileans starting to appreciate the Aymara and Mapuche cultures.

Chilean Government? Please, that's like saying that your posts are intelligently worded. The Chilean government is a sham puppet government set up by members of the vast left-wing conspiracy. how do I know? I've been to the Kerry's weekend Chilean house.. a spacious 1 room corrugated tin shack.

Fourth -- You're an idiot who needs a passport and just a little intellectual curiosity.

As I previously stated ma'am, look on a map. Its all there in black, white, and a wide variety of colours. LIsten, the green's have been after Chili for years for destroying thier natural habitat in an attempt to spur on industrialism. It is a well known fact that that natural habitat is the rainforest. Every year tens of thousands of square miles of it are destroyed in all of S. America, including Chili.

Go to bed, Drunkie McStumble. You're making an ass of yourself. Until you've lived in my country,

Lady, you're from Phoenix. While I will admit that it is different from where I live, I would hardly consider it a different country. Nice try though, trying to pass yourself off as a Chili-ite.

STFU! Dumbass!

Nice to know living in a country automatically gives you better knowledge of said country than environmental groups, news services, Chilean courts, tourist sites, etc...

Hey, dumbass... Go to Chile and find a South American Rain Forest!

Why bother going there? There's loads of pics of the temperate Valdivian Rainforest already available.

2005-06-26 06:20:41 AM
Of course, British Columbia (with a U, thanks) along the western coastal mountains is rainforest as well.

Rainforest != brazilian jungles, which is probably where the confusion is arising.

A rainforest is a forest that gets a lot of rain. West coast of North America in middle latitudes? Pretty much a given it'll have rain.

I don't think this is any great surprise. We knew Chile had helped us during the war as Thatcher kept telling us how wonderful good ole lovable squashy Pinochet was

I've often felt that 20 minutes with her old friend's dogs would be appropriate given Thatcher's behaviour during this era*. I don't believe in divine retribution, but the current state of her health gives me cause to consider it.

*If you don't know what I'm referring to, Google "dogs chile torture" but be warned you'll need a very strong stomach

Now I'm no longer sad about that back-stabbing traitor Pinochet getting jailed like a punk in Spain or wherever (in the EC).

What a tool.

Q-You help out England and how do they repay you?
A-They laugh at you while You're thrown in slammer like the slug you are.

Q-Hmm let's see Serbia also sided with the USA during WW2,
how did we repay them?
A-In tons of explosives dropped on them.

OK who wants to help us next?

Wait Argentina needed a book to know this? The Royal Navy Sea Kings buzzing around Chile during the war didn't give it away?

/the RN still owned the Argentina navy.
//Britian was gonna win, worst case they could invoke the mutual aid treaty in NATO since part of their control have been invaded.

2005-06-26 10:24:51 AM
The Falklands conflict was (from the British perspective) as near a "just war" as you can get.

What part of "It's entire population are ethnicially British and want to remain British" didn't Argentina understand?

Sovereignty is want people want, it's not a matter dictated by force, history, territorial integrity - or the unpopularity of dodgy 3rd world dictators.

"What Chile should have done was tell Argentina they didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning against a NATO supported Britain."

Britain got no help from NATO at all. Which sort of brings the entire point of NATO into question. I mean, one of your democratic territories is invaded by a fascist dictator with a taste for torture and mass-murder and NATO says "you're on your own." Fark NATO. Anyway, this is old news. A burned-out British helicopter was found in Argentina I believe, it could only have come from Chile and was transporting UK special forces to watch the main Argentine air base. Chile and Argentina hated each other and would gladly support the other's enemy.

thatcher could've had the support of nato at her request, she instead managed to isolate argentina economically. mainly with the help of her intimate friend ronnie. the argentinians were defending themselves from british aggression. does the u.s. get to pick and choose to whom our monroe doctrine applies to?

The Falklands War was basically a desperation ploy by the military dictators in Argentina at the time.

The country was a mess (as usual) and they just wanted to deflect attention from the disaster by rousing nationalist sentiment. Unfortunately, the Argentinians underestimated the British resolve that such an action would not stand.

They got their asses kicked, the military dictatorship fell, and "democracy" took hold til today.

They are still fighting about it but the Brits basically ignore them. The Argentinians need to put it to rest & concentrate on what is really important - get their country back on track.

I travel at least once a year to Argentina & all they do is cry about what they were & what they could have been. The economy is a mess, unemployment is high, and overall a pessimistic view taints everything.

I wish them well but they need to MOVE ON.......

Uh, you wouldn't care to explain that assertion would you, macanizer?

look at the timeline in the link i provided. any attempts for peace negotiations were either rejected or answered with aggression by the british.

i'm not going to debate you about this pointless war. just like Ignorant McNugget quoted: The falklands conflict was nothing more than two bald men fighting over a comb. -Jorge Luis Borges

Gash

an SAS patrol was sent to take out the aircraft at the airbase not watch it - a la WWII style, but they bottled it and never went, going straight to Chile. They even left the helicopter crew to find their own way out, even though they where meant to help the crew who risked their lies to get them their and ditch the helicopter.

other SAS members where pissed when they found out that no attempt at all was given, as they would loved to be on that type of mission.
