I drive on that highway (I-40) pretty often, my home is quite near it. It's insane- people routinely drive at 90 mph or more. Drivers here are self-centered and insane. Absolutely no courtesy on the road.

I've never understood how someone could ride one of those things in shorts. I remember what it felt like to wreck my bicycle on blacktop as a kid, all too well. Extrapolate that to highway speeds...*shudder*

Doing that without full gear is definitely darwin material. Even the full gear won't save you ass at 130 mph if you crash into something. Every rider will however hit the top speed of his machine at least once though. Just don't do it when someone else can get hurt.

It's about self control, or the lack of it. That's why i'm switching back to the gold ole 500 cc twin from my 750 cc sport touring bike. Yes, any bike today runs up to 100 mph but when the bike is underpowered enough you won't get tempted to crank the throttle as much as the 1000 cc bike's kick on the ass would do.

I40 in the RTP is a raceway. I was driving there last week in my work 'burb, even at 80 I had people blow by me. Even the workzone stuff doesn't slow people down anymore, nothing like doing 60 6" from a Jersey bumper while a semi blows by you at 75+.

Speaking of Darwin, one of my neighbors was racing in town and ate it. Off the road, into a ditch, got some serious air sans bike. Now he spends most of his time drooling and making strange noises.

I got to ride along with a state trooper in an unmarked (though the four antennas kinda gave it away) Camaro once. 140 on the Interstate, the fastest I've ever been in a wheeled vehicle.

Blew through a small town at about 60, local cop pulled out behind us, and he didn't even slow down. About when the local cop got close enough to run our plates (civilian, but they would come back as State Police), he flipped on his lights and pulled over. They chatted for a minute and we went on our way.

Frequently, I'll find myself pissed off at my ex wife while riding my motorcycle. She tends to do something every day to cause frustration. I'll triple the speed limit on a long straight back road... it's stupid...

Then I'll think about my three kids, and how I'd never forgive myself if I left them in her care... because she really is the spawn of satan. And I mean that in the most literal sense possible. I truely think her mother is the devil.

Anyway... my comment is 25% commentary on motorcycling, and 75% hatred of my ex wife. Who is currently up to no good and I just want everyone on fark to know this.

Wow...same thing happend to me once...well except I was in a car, the police car was marked, and I didn't get pulled over. In my defence,

80 mph isn't fast on the major highways in my part of the world (Greater Toronto). When I'm riding my bike on the highway, 80 feels pretty slow. 100 feels pretty fast. 110 feels very fast! Most of the time I keep it at about 90, just a bit quicker than the speed of traffic. Having said that, I'm a very cautious rider, even if you think 100 mph is fast and stupidly dangerous.

The power to weight ratio of current motorcycles is mind-boggling. I bought a 17-year-old 600cc sportbike that'll do 135 mph (and up to 175 indicated on the speedo!). All for a bike that cost me $2000.

For $10,000 you can get a brand new Suzuki GSXR litre bike. 365 pounds, and 176 horsepower. That's less than 2.1 pounds of weight for every horse. Compare that to say, a Dodge Viper, which is about 7.5 pounds for every pony.
