Wow , that California real estate is worth $1.8M.

Good grab. Insurance would have "overlooked" that one.

The rich get richer.

TakeC: I don't know about this specific guy, but most of these people were not rich. Their land may have been worth a lot, but that does not mean that they are rich. I read some stats. Most of the homes were around 1400 sf. And there were many residents who had owned their homes for 20-30 years.

2005-06-22 11:46:43 PM
He's still a dumbass for living in a landslide area.

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. (CBS) A couple who lost their multimillion-dollar home

awwwww cry me a river! multimillion dollar home? me thinks they'll be able to afford another house!

2005-06-22 11:50:52 PM
I love reading about stuff like this. Did anyone ever get those Ripley's Believe it or Not books from their school book fairs back in the day? I dont know if any of the crap in there was ever true but I do remember one of the stories in one of the books was about a bakery in Europe sometime at like the turn of the century that was using a painting that they thought was a piece of junk that they'd had in the back room forver to cool pastries on and it turned out that it was a long lost Rembrandt or something. Or the people who buy similarly priceless paintings at flea markets or find them in their grnadparents' attics, etc. Damn, why can't I inherit some kind of creepy old castle filled with long lost art and treasures and such. blast.

2005-06-22 11:53:00 PM
Not to mention that insurance will pay off the house and property.... makes you wonder if it was pre-meditated.

2005-06-22 11:56:17 PM
Most insurance doesn't cover landslides. And when these homes were built, we honestly didn't know as much about landslides as we know now. Remember, this wasn't a surface landslide. This happened well below ground.

2005-06-22 11:59:53 PM
Wow, that's half a million more dollars to be spent on pink flamingos and lawn fertilizer...yay for art.

2005-06-23 12:02:42 AM
Remember kids... it's only worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

A multimillion dollar home in cali is not much of a home.

Take for example this home

Thats it. I'm going to start going to the dam garage sales and start sifting though everyones useless junk.

If there is one thing this teaches us is that one mans usless junk is another mans treasure.

Gnaget: Take for example this home

That's not exactly a multimillion dollar home either, is it?
Granted, $700k would buy a lot more where I'm from.

2005-06-23 12:21:25 AM
Gnaget.....that home isn't a multimillion dollar home...it is worth 699k.

Gnaget: A multimillion dollar home in cali is not much of a home.

Tell me about it! When Mr Theologian and I visited my family in So Cal, my mom showed us the half-million homes in Burbank. Nothing fancy. Such a home there would be priced in the Fort Wayne area at $150k-200k, if not less.

Keep in mind that these homes have been bought years ago a much cheaper price than today.

/The only redeeming value in California is In-N-Out.

2005-06-23 12:36:15 AM
And when these homes were built, we honestly didn't know as much about landslides as we know now.

This true . . . landslide technology has advanced exponentially in the past 20 years.

Here's one.

And another.

Not exactly cheap for what you could get even in the northeast.

That first link was supposed to be this.

2005-06-23 12:39:31 AM
Since real estate is based on both location, value of land, and value of the home, they could possibly end up with at least as high value after they rebuild. And that's without insurance.

2005-06-23 12:41:20 AM
Better yet, here is a comparison of what 1.4 million dollars can get you in:

Fort Wayne

Los Angeles

fark you farktards who talk about California like you've actually spent some time here. Dredge up all the stereotypes you want, this state > your state.

2005-06-23 12:48:42 AM
Paintings are so overpriced in California. In Boston or New Hampshire they are much cheaper.

Romulux: fark you farktards who talk about California like you've actually spent some time here

I was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley. I miss California and I have great times there. But when it comes to the cost of living, it's crummy.

/And if anyone thinks LA is expensive, you have not seen Miami...

//Home of $5 million condos...

2005-06-23 12:55:12 AM
My grandfather bought a Picasso sketch at a yardsale for $5. Picasso wasn't famous then.

Not worth 1/2 mil, but still, its cool to have.

2005-06-23 12:58:29 AM
Romulux i live in california too and i admit we are all retarded here, i mean we are the like the retarded little brother to the rest of the nation.

Maybe you'll find some baby clothes worth half a million bucks.

"Can you get a closeup of this? It's fifty year-old cheese!"

The rich can't turn around without making money.

/still, 1.8m - 0.5m = 1.3m they still have to "find" elsewhere. Have you checked the couch cusions? Oh what's that, your couch is a Salvadore Dali sculpture worth 2.8 million? Gee, what a surprise. And your dog just crapped out the Hope Diamond? It's your lucky day!

/I want to be rich, but I keep blowing all my investment money on high-speed 'net access and Otter pops.

Most insurance doesn't cover landslides.

I have never understood this. Why doesn't home insurance cover home destruction?

my home is nicer than that one and it cost under $100k

there are probably additions to a regular home owners policy that would cover land slides, kinda like earthquakes and mine subsidiaries.

2005-06-23 01:39:03 AM
my home is nicer than that one and it cost under $100k

You must have bought it more than 4 years ago.

I wasn't trying to single anyone out, I was merely being generally inflammatory ;) That said, FecalFeaster, I must admit that California is not without its fair share of mental midgets.

/I ain't rich, I just live here.

I have never understood this. Why doesn't home insurance cover home destruction?

You'd have to be an insurance underwriter with a death wish if you were to insure those homes on stilts in the hills. I can't believe people actually buy those. I wonder how anybody can buy a one on a mortgage. Your bank is going to want a guarantee on their investment, so people must buy these things with cash nowadays.

2005-06-23 05:02:51 AM
The lost house was described as being "multimillion-dollar". Is it any surprise there was something of value inside it?

In short then, yawn.

2005-06-23 05:55:29 AM
Another irony: Trevino tells KCAL 9 that about six weeks before the landslide, the painting was moved from the living room of their home to their studio because of their 50th wedding anniversary party. If the painting had stayed in the living room, it may not have been discovered -- the living room is hanging over the side of a cliff and is inaccessible.

Who knew Alanis would be reduced to writing stories for CBS?

When I read the headline, the first thing I thought of was the horrible new cover of "Landslide" by Billy Corgan. And then there is the picture, I knew someone would post it.

*cringes*
