I guess technically, he cashed $13,084.55

Those last 4 pennies can start his new collection.

Doesn't Coinstar take something like 5-10% of your total? Why wouldn't he just take it all to a bank? Maybe they paid him to do it as a publicity stunt. Hmm.

2005-06-22 08:52:39 PM
I was just thinking, "Hope he didn't take it to a coinstar."

/didn't RTFA

Half that article was a coinstar commercial, I'm sure they gave him a good deal.

Hey kids! Do you like Chimpokomon?! Then you'll love: ALABAMA MAN! Alabama maaaaan! He's thick, he's fit, he's active!

Well, that certainly makes cents.

1308459 times 3 grams = 3,925,377 grams = 8,653.97 pounds

This had to have taken multiple trips and/or tucks.

Penny for your thoughts?

I bet Steve McQueen probably had $13,084.59 at some point in his career.

Speaking of Steve McQueen, anyone think the Fark Personals guy looks like him?

/good segue

should change title to "pizza guy not amused"

control beat me to it.

2005-06-23 01:41:23 AM
OTOH if he kept that 13000 in the bank for 38 years instead of in 55 gallon drums in his garage he'd be rich right now.

2005-06-23 01:42:50 AM
Well, I'm torn. On the one hand, this guy was previously taking a bunch of pennies out of circulation. Less pennies = better. Of course, the Mint sees this "use" as "need" and makes more to keep up with the "demand". Therefore, I hate him. World would be better with no pennies.

2005-06-23 01:46:26 AM
damn! how much did Coinstar get for that! they're a total rip off

2005-06-23 01:46:51 AM
Did they mean this Alabama man?

"Coinstar machines count up to 600 coins per minute"

For those playing at home, that's a little over 36 hours or about a week's work. I hope his time was worth the effort.

2 thoughts:

1. Coinstar took a lot of this guy's retirement fund.

2. Coinstar machines count up to 600 coins per minute

Google calculator:

(1 308 459 / 600) * minutes = 36.3460833 hours

He spent 36 hours in front of that coinstar? Wow, that's dedication.

It probably seemed that way because it was a press release sent out by Coinstar Inc.

Damnit. Too slow. You suck.

Control, I think it's likely he handled many an ass penny.

And since he had to have handled at least one of mine, I have the upper hand.

damn, i have a 5 gallon poland spring bottle full of change, and somehow doubt it comes to anywhere near that.

the largest-ever single cash-in of pennies, totaling 1,308,459 pennies (or $13,084.59).

Included for the base-10 impaired. Errr... decimally challenged.

/1 dollar is really a kilopenny

2005-06-23 02:03:52 AM
Weird, I know here, its illegal to take that many coins out of circulation, especially for an extended period.

2005-06-23 02:05:07 AM
Yeah, I've had the "late night cigarette craving, but nothing but nickels" thing going too.....shame MY local coinstar-having store doesn't give you the cash until 8am!
Bastards!

Are you sure it isn't you who is decimally challenged?

/1 kilopenny = $10.00

What really sucks is that the bank is using a coinstar machine, charging their customers 8.9% to deposit money. Fark that, get the damn tellers counting, legal tender and all that crap.

2005-06-23 02:08:16 AM
You gotta hand it to coin star though. That's one heck of a racket they have going there.

/8.9% my ass, I'll count my change.

or 6,543 rolls with 9 cents left over. always with the leftovers.
Bank insists name and phone number on every one of them.

Had one friend who ran a store and always gave change in
nickels instead of pennies. maybe he heard of the ass penny.

went to a convenience store one night, some folks had put their change in the coinstar but the grocery store wouldn't honor their reciept after 9pm. Suprisingly, the convenience store wouldn't take their reciept from a different store, but they needed the money, apparently..

Sold it to me for a dollar..
it was worth 1.67. after coinstar got their 10%.

????
Profit!

If you calculate the number of calories he has burned by lifting 4.5 tons of metal an average of 38 inches...

Ah screw it. He got shafted in the end.

Anyone else think of "Alabanambla" from Radio Onion?

2005-06-23 02:26:03 AM
i walked into the food emporium in new rochelle new york a few years ago and someone had deposited $89 in a coinstar machine and then apparently just left, not even printing the reciept. so i did the 'right' thing and went and cashed it in as quickly as i possibly could.

/i ate like a king that night

2005-06-23 02:31:35 AM
With all the extra cash, he had to upgrade to a king-size savings account.

2005-06-23 03:07:25 AM
I touched your mama.... and she liked it.

.. return to a worthless article.
... dots are better than slashes
.... should we send Drew our change and make him cash it in?

2005-06-23 03:12:41 AM
OK, here is the guy.

2005-06-23 03:23:51 AM
That's cool that he was able to trade all those coins for cash...uh; wait a minute. Aren't coins cash?

2005-06-23 03:24:43 AM
tkirby

He didn't have $13k back then though. I think it took him 38 years to collect that much in pennies.

2005-06-23 04:51:34 AM
What a wonderful concept, saving up pennies!
Instead of investing my money and get at least an average 8% annual return over the next 30 years, I think I am going to collect pennies as well!

truth be told, the $.09/dollar fee that coinstar charges isn't that bad. Given the amount of time you'd spend rolling the little buggers yourself, and the money you'd spend on rolls, $.09 doens't seem too bad if you ask me.

/supports coinstar whenever I need it

Ok. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and predict I'll be the only one in the thread born and raised in said Alabama town of 1,000 strong.

Some fun Flomaton, AL facts:
1) "Ed's Service Station", the business owned by Mr. Knowles, is widely known as the only place in town high schoolers can get cigarettes.

2) They have a HUGE high school drop-out rate. The graduating high school class had approximately 45 students this year. There were over 70 students in that class 5 years ago when they were in 7th grade. Yikes.

3) The town was hit quite hard by Hurricane Ivan last October. Here's a before/after picture of my mom's back yard.
