"All Star Banjo Band"

I know those words but that sign makes no sense.

The Banjo CAN be cool in the right hands:

http://www.curtiseller.com/

Go bathe in the demented genius that is Curtis Eller.

Ok, so I know the guy...but it's been a long time since he moved out of Chapel Hill for NYC, and he still rocks.

2002-04-10 10:33:27 AM
Man, how cool would it be to see these guys on a double bill with Those Darn Accordians?

Baddy: Now, let's you just drop them pants.
Bobby: Drop?
Baddy: Just take 'em right off.

...

Baddy: Them panties. Take 'em off. Hey boy, you look just like a hog. Come on piggy, give me a ride. Looks like we got us a sow here, instead of a boar. I bet you can squeal like a pig.
Bobby: Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Steve Martin is an excellent banjo player. I once saw him on a late night talk show, I forget which one, and he playd banjo with a large group of musicians, and he was great.

He uses his banjo powers for good and awesome!

"I had this terrible fear that the tenor banjo, which is one of America's oldest instruments, was just going to fade away."

I've woken with night sweats thinking the same thing.

Five words: Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.

2002-04-10 10:41:56 AM
Bluegrass is cool.

i wouldn't want to listen to it more than once a week or so, but come on, you gotta like it at least a little bit, any genre of music where people have so much fun playing it can't be all bad.

2002-04-10 10:42:31 AM
YEEEEEE-HAWWWWWWWWWW!!!

2002-04-10 10:43:22 AM
The sample music on that website is HORRIBLE. I'm guessing 6th grade band students could do better.

I prefer steel guitar, myself, but banjo's pretty cool.

Bela & the Flecktones are incredible, as are any number of bluegrass bands. Yonder Mountain String Band is pretty fun too ...

2002-04-10 10:51:35 AM
Scoots, like who, Robert Randolph?

2002-04-10 10:52:17 AM
Alright, 'nuf of this 'YACKIN.

I am here to defend the banjo.

First of all, we're in the midst of a bluegrass/traditional country music revival thanks to that George Clooney movie "Brother Where Ya Bound" and the "Man of Constant Sorrow" deal. They've even been touring a showcase concert and the producers of the movie are even involved. No shortages of banjos there!

In addition, it has recently become popular to record bluegrass versions of classic rock tunes and even entire albums. A bluegrass tribute to Pink Floyd was released in 2001, for example. Samples are here.

Bela Fleck and The Flecktones had a cool banjo player, namely Bela Fleck! They also have traditionally hosted an assortment of musically eclectic individuals. There's a hell of a lot more than bluegrass here, although Bela did have a succesful "Traditional Country" career prior to the Flecktones.

I suggest the Flecktones' CD "Cosmic Hippo" but they may well have recorded a better one since I last checked in on 'em. They're GREAT live, too and extremely fun to talk to. I SERIOUSLY RECOMMEND THAT ANY ASPRIING BASS PLAYER CHECK OUT THE FLECKTONES VICTOR WOOTEN (sp?) - he may be one of the best bass players alive today.

I'm just a' Pickin and Grinnin,

Not familiar with Robert Randolph. I like Junior Brown a lot tho...

2002-04-10 10:54:04 AM
Oh, and FerrisBueller, Thanks for the banjo link. Pretty damn good.

2002-04-10 10:54:20 AM
Robert plays pedal steel, a bit different than a steel. Check him out at www.robertrandolph.net - you won't regret it. And he's always in our the Northeast.

2002-04-10 10:54:36 AM
Ahhh, the sound of 55 banjos playing at once....by 6th graders...with various tuning idiosyncracies, no doubt...how relaxing...

2002-04-10 10:56:04 AM
Ignore that crap... This is real banjo music.

Good enough to make you want to fark your cousin.

twice.

place in texas + banjo resurgence = obvious.
you sure got a purty mouth.

2002-04-10 10:57:54 AM
I wonder if Ned Beatty really read the script before taking the role...

2002-04-10 10:58:31 AM
Pedal steel is nice too....I really like that sound. Too be honest I'm not aware of any "new" country/bluegrass artists outside of Junior Brown. I go for stuff like old Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, Hank Williams, etc.

2002-04-10 10:59:35 AM
Bad_CRC, no thanks, none of my cousins are farkable.

2002-04-10 11:00:24 AM
This is the funniest CRAP ive ever heard.

Banjos are part of a musical revival?

Yeah, and Carrottop is creating a comedic sensation.

Id rather listen to a kazoo.

Want to hear good bluegrass? Make it a point to get to the Walnut Valley Bluegrass festival in Winfield, KS. One of the best bluegrass events in the county. Third weekend in September. Viva la banjo...

2002-04-10 11:05:12 AM
Are there really this many banjo fans on FARK?

2002-04-10 11:07:27 AM
When I think of banjos, I think of...

a) Space Ghost's mutated sea-monkey (Banjo! BAN-JOOOOO!)

b) The theme song from the vastly underrated movie, Ten Thousand Maniacs by H. G. Lewis (YEEEEEE-HAW! Oh, the South's gonna rise again!)

Now Hee-Haw has come back to smack me in the face thanks to the picture above (I'm-a pickin'...and I'm-a grinnin'!). God Bless you Roy and Buck...for making me laugh about love again!

Sorry, please ignore me and go back to making fun of banjos...

A Herschel Gordon Lewis tie-in was the last thing I expected in this thread.

I HATE BANJO PLAYING FARKERS AND SQUEELING PIGGIES !!!!

2002-04-10 11:09:08 AM
HEY! I'm a spic and I like the banjo. Makes you hicks sound all cultural and stuff. Sounds cool, no, really!

Bluegrass music is hick-olicious until some stupid redneck starts to sing like the inbred hot-pink-faced idiot he is.

So screw you dicks. If you dont like the Banjo you are ashamed of being american or whatever you are. Hicks.

2002-04-10 11:09:16 AM
Scoots: I aim to please...

2002-04-10 11:11:58 AM
I hear Blood Feast 2 is coming out. Can't wait, such
a huge fan. That dude is a genius!

Oh yeah, banjos are cool.

2002-04-10 11:13:14 AM
The banjo is a difficult instrument to play but in the right hands it can produce some good toe-tapping tunes.

2002-04-10 11:14:35 AM
Spram: I like spics like you until you start to talk like the dirty pig-farking idiot that you are.

2002-04-10 11:15:23 AM
I like caca!

2002-04-10 11:17:04 AM
The word "spic" is such an ugly word. Can't we use a more pleasant term like "pepper belly"?

2002-04-10 11:18:26 AM
Pepper Belly? What the hell does that mean anyway? I thik spic sounds cool. SOunds like brit and brits are snooty. Snooty people are cool!

2002-04-10 11:19:34 AM
I'm a banjo fan and player. I play banjo along with sequenced gameboy. True folk music which borrows from my distant -and- recent heritage.
