Why don't those fark-heads ever call my phone? Damn the man.

2002-04-09 02:15:52 PM
Man, he is lucky! I should do that when they call me up in the middle of dinner.

My brother just puts the phone up to his stereo and blasts some of his punk music into the guys ear until he hangs up.

Recently I've been getting a lot of telemarketing calls from Bob Guccione, but for some reason I just don't want to complain ......

Unfortunately most states don't have anti-spam laws as good as Washington.

Inappropriate use of the "Hero" tag:

I know it's been linked, but this one is BIGGER!

The better to show "Mr. I'm pasty-white, fat, and I sue everybody".

If this is law in 21 states, what are the other 20. If there's a way to keep Countrywide home mortgage from leaving their damned automated messages on my voicemail 5 times a day, I'd love to hear it!

2002-04-09 02:32:36 PM
I've been getting automated marketing calls from some shady cellular service. My battle isn't going as easily. To add insult to injury, you hear the automated sales schpeel, then another voice comes on and says, "Due to the popularity of this offer, we cannot take your call now." It's unbelievable. Luckily with a little e-sweat I was able to find the marketing director's direct number. Now the fun begins.....

2002-04-09 02:32:49 PM
There is a national telemarketing act that has the same rules...

2002-04-09 02:38:27 PM
What is this "home phone" you speak of? I actually canceled my home phone number and just use my cell.

2002-04-09 02:40:14 PM
that's kind of tough to do when you have DSL

2002-04-09 02:40:15 PM
I've been getting random calls from telemarketers at all hours - but the phone just rings once; when I pick up there's no one there, but the call-back # is 999-999-0001. It's been going on for four months now, in the middle of the night, whenever...I registerd with the NY State "no telemarketers" list last year, but only recently with the national one -- I'm hoping that will fix the problem.

2002-04-09 02:42:44 PM
"schpeel" is actually "speil" or isn't it
Ich spreche nicht sehr gut Deutsche

2002-04-09 02:44:53 PM
National list of no telemarketers? Where the hell can I find that?

2002-04-09 02:45:17 PM
Tmwes: but not if you have a cable modem

2002-04-09 02:45:55 PM
Spiel ist nicht Deutsch, not in the sense you're using it, but, yes, it is Spiel.

I'm getting text message spam on my cell phone. The person leaving has an email address in Japan.

Gwinny: The NYS law has worked wonders for me. I only get charity calls now, which I now avoid thanks to caller ID.

As for those 'ghost calls', I get those too, often saying that they come from 'Ontario' or 'Colorado'. I tried calling them back and got their information number.

So the only theory I have on them now is this, brought to you by the marvelous Straight Dope:

What causes ghost rings?

Interesting, regardless of whether or not it is the case.

2002-04-09 02:59:22 PM
no cable available for me yet..but I will probably make the switch once it is..

2002-04-09 02:59:34 PM

What causes ghost rings?

Hello, this is Homer Simpson, a.k.a. Happy Dude. The court has ordered me to call every person in town to apologize for my telemarketing scam. I'm sorry. If you can find it in your heart to forgive me, send one dollar to Sorry Dude, 742 Evergreen Terrace, Springfield. You have the power.

Ben Schroeter, a Magnolia paralegal and live music Webmaster

wow this guy just screams of success

Hasn't anyone noticed how the telemarketing company just got themselves national exposure for $500? The story even included the URL for their web site.

Who really made out like a bandit here?

2002-04-09 03:26:47 PM
unlisted unpublished numbers work real well for getting rid of telemarketers, nasty reletives, and other arseholes...

2002-04-09 03:48:36 PM
Yeah Areaman, but how many folks do you think they are going to have to send a $500 check to? I'm sending them an email today.

2002-04-09 03:49:12 PM
So basically, I should sit at home and wait for the phone to ring and possibly make money for every call.....

2002-04-09 03:57:09 PM
I keep getting automated messages on my answering machine, but they get cut off before I can get the number to call them. That and roofers/siding places/mortgage companies. I think that I'll just pay my rent and have the apartment taken care of by the people who own it, thank you.

And in a streak of journalistic marvel:

"Woo hoo!" he wrote.

Thats amazing. I'm glad reporters have such a keen eye for the important.
