I betcha some drunk college studends would die to party in that house.

2002-04-09 04:15:06 PM
Unspecified "personal and family health considerations" led to the installation of the elevator, he said.

I think that's doublespeak for "too lazy to WALK" . . .

"The entertainment system should be characterized as a ''multimedia center'' used to show educational technology, he said."

Nice try princess. Teaching classes in the den are we? Retard.

Now, if you were the next university president, you'd probably be moving into a really sweet place.

I knew someone with an elevator in their house. My grandparents in Mississippi lived next door to this crazy old Southern belle, and her house literally had two spiral staircases going up to the FRONT DOOR. Madness.

''I can only say to you, with all my heart, that I made decisions that I thought were in the best interests of the university,'' Perkins said in the letter.

an elevator was in the "best interests of the university? sounds like he's got "FatAss Syndrome"

''I can only say to you, with all my heart, that I made decisions that I thought were in the best interests of the university,'' Perkins said in the letter.

"Can't you see, I got the elevator, entertainment center, and albino tiger cubs for YOU Towson University!"

If I were a Towson alum, I'd seriously reconsider next year's donation.

Why wasn't this spotted sooner? Wasn't anyone overseeing the renovation project? That's a pretty big cost overrun.

Maryland's second-largest public university.

Pardon my ignorance (or not), but by "public" are we talking tax money? Because if there's tax money involved, so help me, I'll....I'll....

I always wondered why the hell my tution costs are high. Maybe our president planning a new cruise.

University prez = farkwad. Oh well, at least a bunch of hippies didn't go dance on his lawn, like here at Queen's. *sigh* Our school newspaper appears to have removed the link to the article.

This is not news. College presidents everywhere grab every dollar they can--before the football coach takes it.

$79,000 elevator and $25,000 entertainment center

$79K + $25K = $104K. I could pay off my house with that.

2002-04-09 04:20:38 PM
The man has an ELEVATOR in his house!!!

What does he live in? A mall!
People in wheel chairs don't have elevators. They have to crawl upstairs.
Why stop at the elevator? I would have got a gold toilet too.

I dated a girl from Towson once - dumb as a board, but real cute.........

2002-04-09 04:22:54 PM
University money is better spent on elevators and stereo equipment than on salaries for bullshiat postmodern/feminist/revisionist [insert adjective of your choice] faculty. You've got to kill that shiat at the source -- stop its funding at colleges, b/c it can't live anywhere else.

2002-04-09 04:23:12 PM
Casper - so does Dean Kamen (have an elevator, that is) though he invented a wheelchair that goes up stairs.

Gold hopper - probably - nice and cold on a winter morning.

2002-04-09 04:23:12 PM
He's probably got a gold seat on the crapper too. Greedy bastard.

2002-04-09 04:23:35 PM
Casper - You are a dumbass. Many disabled Americans have elevators in their homes, especially those living in those suburban style homes that have stairs going up and down as soon as you enter the front door; sometimes they are built into the garage.

2002-04-09 04:24:32 PM
Casper: You haven't lived until you've experienced the gold toilet.

2002-04-09 04:24:43 PM
Hytes Xian: yep, that's what public means. Your taxes at work!

2002-04-09 04:25:21 PM
"beggar that I am I am even poorer in thanks."

The last paragraph of his letter. I'm not sure what he means but I think it is funny.

2002-04-09 04:26:02 PM
Money well wasted. I would love to have a gold toilet myself. Heck, I'd even make a PMS Room (a la Panic Room) like the one on Leno last night.

2002-04-09 04:26:25 PM
Diogenes: Right on. Towson's Alum Assoc. hasn't gotten 1 cent from me in 5 years. This is the school I was ashamed to attend when they spent an arm and a leg to get the Jerky Boys to come perform a 'concert'. What a farkin' waste of good money.

Hytes Xian: Yep - part of the University of Maryland System (receives state funds)along with The main U. of MD and U of MD Baltimore Campus. Your taxdollars @work, I fear.

The thing about crwaling was scarcasm. Too bad it didn't get through.

I failed to realize that some people on fark are just not that smart to get it. It won't happen again. I'll point it out next time.

This is nothing compared to how state and municipal governments have raped the idea of "emminent domain" into begin able to take land from anyone to build a strip mall, tire factory or NASCAR speedway AND offer the corporations tax breaks to bring them into the community. Few new jobs are created and property value gets farked up majorly. If you want some good examples, look at Michigan and Kansas City, KS.

Seriously, the quality of most arts courses offered at University sucks nowadays. Here, most of the history courses are lame-ass social history. I'm going to have to take transfer credits from Royal Military College (just across the bay from Queen's) just so I can get any good military history courses, or courses that aren't taught by Marxists.

2002-04-09 04:28:52 PM
This kind of stuff happens at colleges and universities everywhere. A small local college in our area had the same thing happpen, new president, presidents residence gets $100K makeover. College has to sell land at it's equestrian center to stay afloat. College can't keep decent maintenace help because they pay shait wages, yet president gets big bux$ and lives in mansion. It cost around $28K a year to attend this college.

2002-04-09 04:29:17 PM
The sarcasm seemed obvious to me.
I haven't been here long but i love this place already because of the razor sharp wit (seriously)

here is his letter to the students:

http://www.towson.edu/tu/events/perkinsresignation.html

its a long read, but there are hilarious quotes in there!

"For understandable reasons, the media made much of this. They poked fun at the "entertainment center," which in fact was a multimedia, not "entertainment" center. This was not to be used for personal movie viewing by my family, but instead, was explicitly designed to demonstrate the effective use of technology in an instructional setting."

2002-04-09 04:29:30 PM
From his resignation letter:

"In our earliest view of the Greenway property ultimately acquired, we knew that for it to function effectively, both for our family and the University, at least one bedroom on the first floor or an elevator would be important. It was determined that it would be less costly to install an elevator than to add a bedroom, an installation that, in fact, would allow the house to function much better for University purposes."

I don't get it - can you sleep in an elevator?

2002-04-09 04:29:45 PM
Casper - Thank you for the clarification. Sometimes it's hard to tell when someone is being funny (as in your case) and when someone is just plain idiotic.

Ah the news from my home town. On a related note, the Maryland government wants to cut the amount of money going to state Universities. I work at one. I better not be told they can't afford to give me a raise this year.

No, they missed the best part of this story. This dude spent $25,000 on a gold commemorative medallion that he wore at graduation.

What an ass...

I stopped giving to that arsemunch excuse of a college when they went from Towson State to just plain Towson....

Glad he's getting his come-uppance, would have much rather perferred it was via a Choclate Eclaire w/ 1 pound of butter per sqr. inch and filled to the brim w/ poison.

I was serious about the toilet of solid gold though. Dead Serious.

Oh, to live the american dream.

From the local article:

Perkins also defended his decision to commission a mace and gold medallion for his $56,000 weeklong inauguration festivities. Both were meant to be symbols of the school's 135-year history, he wrote. "A first-rate university needs to perceive itself as first-rate, and have symbols reflecting its excellence," he said.

Loyola College - Just Down York Rd. in Baltimore - is a fine alternative to the free wheeling, high spending, Tax dollar wasting example set by Towson.

And in twenty-seven years when I pay off the student loans for the for the farkin 18 large a year the place cost me I will start supporting my alma mater.

The entertainment system should be characterized as a ''multimedia center'' used to show educational technology, he said.
And the blow up doll, S&M bondage materials, 3 cases of KY Jelly, and well over 3,000 XL Trojan condoms were for a Human Sexuality course he was teaching
