Still pretty damned cool. And very real looking (though a bit glossy, comparitively.)

They kinda look like action figures, which is what I first thought of when I saw them. Totally real looking, just kind of plasticky. Never would have guessed it was computer generated. And this is just some dude with a home computer (and some expensive software, but still, it's not ILM).

I think what ILM uses is probably comprable to what you can buy on the street nowadays. Hardware wise, anyways. Software is probably a totally different story. But I'm rather sure I could run what ILM has for software with a bit more RAM.

Besides, those pics have been around for months. He simply used a mettalic sphere set in the image to generate a lighting map for the figures, giving them the same lighting as the scene.

Those are digital characters.

The lighting method is called HDRI, High Dynamic Range Imaging.

They basically use that chrome sphere you see in the shots to map the lighting of the environment. So instead of setting up individual little lights, they can actually very effectivly extract real light information by making a few snapshots with a digital camera. They use software to "unwrap" the color from the sphere and create image maps from it.

Awesome stuff isn't it? It's been used for a few years now, in case you're wondering.

Yep, anybody can do this with a modern computer, a copy of HL2, renderman, and a metal sphere.

V8 reffers to the half-life 2 mod, called Garry's Mod. It's a neat little app that lets you play around with objects in the half-life 2 environment. You can make canons and catapaults out of scrap.

So is high dynamic range lighting similar to what the Nvidia GPU is supposed to be able to accomplish in the PS3...which is basically it can reproduce more subtle colors to make things look more naturally lit?
