Am sick and tired of watching a master chest open and seeing raid people who didn't get a class appropriate drop say "oh that sucks, that's crap, that loot stinks". Here's a novel concept, be fired up that SOMEONE other than you had something nice happen to them. Kinda scary thought ain't it?

Good attitude. Too bad everyone cant be that way.

Before rehab I used to be into EQ quite a bit. Curt Shilling is given as all evidence to support all, proof of any EQ-theory is "but look, Curt Shillng plays EQ and he...." (has money/gets laid/isn't terrifying lonely, etc.)

Thank God I have WoW now instead

From ESPN:

As Glanville remembers this poignant tale, he and Schilling were playing a computer game called "EverQuest" -- an online version of Dungeons and Dragons.

"One day," Glanville told Week in Review, "Schill was playing his character, Cylc" -- whom Glanville described as "a dwarven Cleric," whatever that is -- "and he asked me to team up with him in Faydwer, in the zone of the Butcherblock Mountains, to kill Aviaks, which are basically walking birds."

Hang with us here, friends. There will be a baseball point coming.

"My good-natured character, Bingbong," -- whom Glanville described as "a dwarven Paladin," whatever that is -- "was at a little lower level (in status) than his," Glanville said. "So Cylc was better able to withstand the return attacks. Nevertheless, we attack."

So there they were, battling away against those dastardly Aviaks. Suddenly, Glanville began to hear the sound of bones breaking. He quickly deduced those bones belonged to his beloved Bingbong. He looked around for Schilling's guy, Cylc, for assistance.

Oops. No Cylc anywhere in the neighborhood.

"Somewhere in there," Glanville recalled, "he had sent a message to me, saying, 'RUN!.' But he typed this as he was already a mile away from danger and standing next to the guards that protect him. Needless to say, my lifeless character was now chicken feed."

Little did Schilling know this would some day lead to him giving up two home runs to Glanville in a giant airplane hanger in Arizona. But it's true.

"I vowed revenge on the soul of Bingbong," Glanville said, "for the negligent actions of Cylc."

And boy, did Schilling ever pay for Cylc's crimes.

But how do we know this was just an isolated occurrence? Suppose many a big game on the diamond can be explained by isolated acts of violence on a computer screen? This is stuff you never hear about from Miller and Morgan. But it happens, Glanville said.

"Not enough attention is paid to the off-the-field motivators that create nasty on-field grudges," Glanville revealed. "I believe video atrocities top the list. Curt Schilling assassinated my lovable Dwarf Paladin in EverQuest, happily smiling as his character stood in the safety of the town guards. That can create serious internal friction.

"I believe we need to analyze some of the video atrocities committed on PlayStation2 or Dreamcasts, or even the Commodore 64, if we need to go back that far. Teammates play each other all the time on these platforms in baseball simulations, football and other head-to-head games. This creates all kinds of bad blood when the winner is not as gracious as he could be."

Until now, those games may have seemed like just innocent diversions. Now, however, we know different.

"I'm of the theory," Glanville said, "that this could be a key explanation as to why some players have tremendous success against certain other players. Like Todd Helton against Bobby Jones (10-for-16, 3 HR). Or Mike Redmond against Tom Glavine (16-for-25).

"Maybe Glavine beat Redmond in Madden Football, 73-0, and poured Gatorade over himself after the victory. Maybe when Bobby Jones was losing to Helton in NBA Live, he 'accidentally' knocked the cord out of the wall, claiming it was a 'power-surge problem.' We don't know these things, do we?"

No, we have no idea, because until now, we've foolishly confined our baseball analysis to things that happened only in real life. Now we understand that on those computer and video screens, there exists a world within a world. And we'd better investigate that world, too, if we want to continue providing incisive baseball commentary.

And we know this because of one baseball game in Arizona last weekend and one honest, incisive ballplayer named Doug Glanville.

We've been unable to get a comment from Schilling on these events. But at this point, Glanville says, that doesn't matter, anyway. All that matters is the on-field ramifications.

"Schill has to live with what he has done," Glanville said. "He can tell whatever story he wants, but the facts are the facts. Bingbong was set up, led to an untimely death in the prime of his life for no other reason than pure malice. Things like that do not go unavenged. Sometimes it spills out onto the field of play."

And if it ever does again, you know you can count on Week in Review to be right on the scene -- to thoroughly confuse you more than we already have.

No way

2005-06-15 07:05:34 PM
World of Warcraft, with no doubt, is the best MMO I have played in.

Guild Wars was supposed to set them on their ear with the no-monthly-fee-but-still-maintained strategy. GW has the hot look. It's probably the 2nd best MMO, a close second, to WoW.

Notice how both require less than ten hour time chunks to get meaningful game play out of them. The fact that they both play like 1 player games with online components speaks volumes about the fatal flaws of MMOs

I am not a professional baseball player, and I don't have time for games like this (and believe me, I used to play Dragonrealms and it sucked up my entire life). So my question is, how does Curt Schilling have time for a game as complex and time-intensive as EQ? I would like to know the secret.

I got to know him a bit online back when we both frequented GEnie (anyone remember that?) bulletin boards in the early '90s. Not only is he an RPG geek, the guy is a nutty serious wargamer with an encyclopedic knowledge of WWII armor. Do not get in an argument with him over WWII tanks unless you really, really know what the hell you're talking about.

Basically a good, down to earth guy whose attitude was that being a star in baseball was only relevant on the field, and off the field he's just a guy who loves tanks and roleplaying games.

2005-06-15 08:19:08 PM
Sorry WoW is for mmorpg lightweights. Unless you are a pvp'er then it's more hardcore then most any game out there. WoW like EQ has it's game slowing technical defects that the mother ship chooses to ignore and the playerbase tolerates. It will make wow players jump to anything better. EQ 1 is the much richer game in terms of play and content. SWG had a bad play system. I hear it has been revamped. EQ II , well if I was two years old and bored i would play it again. I applaud Schilling for playing and talking now if just more playmate and pornstars would play

So to get the Amulet of Yendor you have to drink a potion of confusion, then read a scroll of Teleport BUT you need a ring of teleport control. Then it'll ask you what level you want to teleport to (see, LEVEL because you're confused, right? And it asks 'cause of the ring! not random! Woot!) and you say "25" and that takes you to Hell, which is where the Wizard of Yendor is, but you'd better either have a ring of Fire Resistance or have FR as an intrinsic (eat a red dragon, right?) otherwise you'll burn up. And a ring of Conflict is good 'cause then you can get the wizard's hellhounds to kill each other instead of munching on you so much but FIRST you have to levitate over the castle moat (ring or spell) and then DIG into the wall (wand or spell/item)...

*sigh*
It used to be so simple. And with ASCII graphics yet.

2005-06-15 08:30:46 PM
WoW is easy to solo from 1-60. There's no challenge to getting to high levels.

Dungeons are difficult in the game, however, especially if you try to go in with anti-social soloist players who don't know that solo tactics = wipe. Well, yeah, you could solo Ragefire Chasm with a level 45 Whatever, but you'd totally be bottom feeding... and you couldn't do that to Maraudon, Sunken Temple, Stratholme, etc.

So there are challenges to WoW, but they are mostly in managing relationships with good players and keeping a shiatlist of the bad ones very handy. The rest of the game is so trivial, it makes the community stand out a little more (as crappy as MMOG communities can be).

/hopefully Brad McQuaid's next effort will be better than this generation of MMOGs

Any Twins fans out there might know that OF Lew Ford is a Doom aficionado. (link to the news item reproduced below)

ANAHEIM, CALIF. -- ... Gardenhire was eating dinner with his wife in an Anaheim restaurant Saturday night when he saw outfielder Lew Ford dining with two guys.

Gardenhire assumed they were former teammates, but Ford introduced them as "guys I met on the Internet."

Gardenhire quickly left.

Sunday, Gardenhire brought Ford into the coaches' room to explain. Ford said he met the guys playing the video game "Doom" on the Internet.

"Lew's always entertaining," Gardenhire said.

Wiping = restarting your character from stratch.

wiping all your statitisics and starting new

nope. It refers to the mass destruction of your entire raid group. It's another way of saying 'wipeout'. A typical scenario is spending two hours organizing and transporting a group of 20-40 people to try and kill 'Monstro Uber X', except Monstro keeps his phat lewts and plays slip-and-slide on his floor with your party's spilt blood.

Scape,

Been playing SWG For two years.

Depending on which server you get started on, it can be quite fun. Basically you get to live life in the Star Wars Universe.

The combat system was entirely re-vamped about a month ago, and for the better since before you could complete your character template in a few days (comparable to making "master level")

Tons of quests, and if you are a big X-Wing VS. TIE Fighter fan, the space based content plays quite a bit like it.

As a matter of fact, there are tons of people I know who are a "Level 1" noobie on the ground, but have earned their Imperial ACE status in space, and pretty much tear into any player rebels with ease.

Yeah, I still play uo on a freeshard - along with about a dozen other active farkers. :)

Read this in an ESPN the Mag article a few years ago. Thought it would be cool to run into him online.

But the real news is how he looks like Adam Sessler of TechTV XPlay "fame."

star_topology ... again, that was an article about the original EverQuest, not EQ2.

ZaxTrax:

You think that's geeky? The guys also owns the company that makes Advanced Squad Leader...which is probably the most complicated geeky WW2 reenactment game out there

//This guys my hero.

Preach on, brother!

Curt, stop wanking with everquest and start pitching. My fantasy baseball team needs you on the mound

And yes, I am well aware that I am engaging in a similar activity to Mssr Shilling.

WoW is the best game I've played since Quest for Glory 1.
what more can I say?

2005-06-15 11:40:50 PM
Yes, there's nothing I would rather do with my millions than EQ.

Except maybe recreating hack-and-slash scenes in my mansion's sub-basement with kidnapped hoboes.

2005-06-15 11:58:12 PM
scumbucket!!!
You loved Quest for Glory, too? I absolutely loved that game... I wish they'd make more games like the ones in that series.

AC Darktide in the old days when the server had under a thousand playing on it was the shiat!... I loved the pk 24/7 and the ability to loot dead bodies made it the best game I have ever played. Too bad it got the crap hacked out of it..

Schilling has long been known as Everquest player, so that was no big surprise.

Sorry, Wow just did not do it for me. Didn't like the cartoony graphics (purposefully done i know). Gameplay was easy, too easy I would say. The hardcore players that I know(not one myself anymore) have left WoW for EQ2 or even gone back to EQ.

Then again 1.5 million WoW players show that there is plenty of room for casual oriented pay MMORPG.

I'm playing WoW completely for free. The internet helped me learn how...

Farker_Taint:

Just got WOW tonight (I know, Im behind).

Any of you fellow farkers have a guild set up or something? I would love to get in to a good group to make the game a little more interesting. (I don't expect hand outs or other such nonsense, just good company).

Windrunner server, Horde guild "Souls of the Damned"

Talk to Frank, Slickshoos, Sludig, or me (Jyudas). We're all farkers. We sure could use a Druid.

now, I knew Curt Schilling was an EQ player, Glanville too, but he also said Todd Pratt plays, which is hillarious. For most of the people here that aren't Phillies fans, Pratt is their backup catcher who was also there when Schilling pitched for them. The guy is basically a big dopey looking goof, so imagining him playing EQ for hours just makes me laugh

I left WoW in april. Fan base is akin to "Lord of The Flies" with down syndrome and keyboards.

Had sex with the wife during a vox raid (she won a Tobrin's Mystical eyepatch!). She did not believe in the "good luck" penis theory I tried to share with her, and she never won phat lewtz again.

2005-06-16 09:31:55 AM
Actually, considering how much time they spend on the road, EQ/EQ2/WoW/etc... are a good way to blow time if you enjoy playing them. It isn't like their hotels don't have internet access and they cannot afford a laptop computer.

2005-06-16 10:14:27 AM
I love how Schill calls EQ2 players lootwhores and whiners. Haha! My girlfriend (EQ2 player, Yankees fan) will be less than amused.

Bah, this shiat is gay. Everyone should play online poker.

I hear he went to SOE fan faire this past week and was letting people wear his World Series ring.

Nepherym

Not a raid goes by that someone in my EQ2 guild doesn't scream out "LEEEEERRRROOOOYYYYYYYYY!!!" in teamspeak when engaging an epic mob.

We can all thank that retard in WoW for that.

2005-06-16 12:42:29 PM
Quest for Glory 1? I thought it was called Hero's Quest, and yea, great game.

2005-06-16 12:58:57 PM
Bah, never been into the whole wizards/elves stuff like WoW/EQ. Now City of Heroes on the other hand...

Triumph Server for life!

/totally addicted

Oh good, we were really worried about your life for a second there.

2005-06-16 02:40:06 PM
Schilling also plays the old Avalon Hill game 'Advanced Squad Leader' (ASL) - a board wargame with little cardboard pieces and everything. He digs THAT game so much he bought the rights to the game from AH when they went bankrupt and started a company just to keep ASL going. Cool guy in my book.

2005-06-16 02:58:36 PM
It's worth pointing out that Curt is the one with world series rings, cy young awards, and a family of 4 kids that happens to play EQ2. Curt is not the one that plays EQ2 and happens to have world series rings, cy young awards, and a family with 4 kids. The MMORPG addicted nerd that works as a blue collar IT staff and has nothing going on with his life other than the video game is going to see the latter.

Holy crap,

I wish i got paid $$million$$ to sit around on my broken leg. And work 3h/day, 1day/week as well when healthy...

i'd play eq2 also...lol

i'd rather play Annihilation X
