Uh, sounds like the magistrate was a perv. The gay community up there must be really desperate for heroes if a man who abused his power so as to feel up teenagers is given that honor.

That'd be kinda like straight men putting up a statue of this guy.

A woman reported a rape, noting she had scratched the attacker on his genitals. Wood took matters into his own hands, lining up the suspects and demanding that they drop their pants so he could "inspect" them.

And how exactly does this classify someone as a pervert??? He was looking for evidence to back her claim. Sounds reasonable to me.

Ang6666: And how exactly does this classify someone as a pervert???

Uhhh.... It kinda looks like he's getting down on his knees to give a bj, like it's the first picture in the series on some 1800's gay porn website.

Let me also say, that's a nice shiny metal ass!

As the article points out, what's more important is that it's emblematic of the pre-modern tendency (in Christian nations*) to assume that anything vaguely relating to two males and anything sexual was a clear indicator of an active "sodomite" who was therefore the worst of all possible sinners.

* The first known society to execute people for homosexuality was, I believe, the Byzantine Empire. From there, institutionalized homophobia has been primarily contained to European nations and their colonies. In the modern world, the spread of institutionalized homophobia has largely followed the spread of Christianity and Islam. Furthermore, the first major religion to contain homophobic teachings is, of course, Judaism, through passages in Leviticus. Ancient Judaism's contemporaries were, more or less, accepting of homosexuality. Note that I include the US in this use of the phrase "Christian nations," for while the government is not explicitly Christian, all of its shepherds are.

That's bollocks.

2005-06-15 01:49:55 AM
I thought the statue was of one guy giving another a bj, until I read the article and learned that he was only "inspecting" his genitals. That's much better.

2005-06-15 01:52:34 AM
I found a photo of the actual statue. The dude standing up has a slogan on his t-shirt that reads, "It is not going to suck itself."

I'm confused. The airbrushed billboard for the movie "Brown Bunny" gets taken down, but the City of Toronto puts up a BRONZE PLAQUE? Okay whatever.

2005-06-15 02:02:39 AM
If I was there on vacation, this would definitely be one photo op I wouldn't miss!

It's about time that they erected something to commemorate maltreating Wood.

/obvious

"(the statue)shows a dapper young man wearing a long coat and holding a top hat and cane."

holding a lot more than a top hat and cane....

"'Let's get something straight: Alexander Wood wasn't a hero, he was a pervert,' columnist Rachel Marsden wrote in the conservative National Post newspaper, noting that the bronze plaque was 'something that could pass for a scene out of the Michael Jackson trial.'"

okay, so Godwinned means you've accused someone of being a Nazi so you lose the thread discussion...does Jacksonned mean you've accused someone of being a homosexual pedophile so you lose the thread??

I have this Canadian friend and he's suspiciously effeminate.

2005-06-15 02:12:34 AM
I think they should make a bronze plaque depicting Michael Jackson in bed with some young boys. Let's put it at Neverland so we can remember it forever. Yeah, that would really send a message to the NAMBLA community. Let's see some more of that.

Could it be these guys???

2005-06-15 02:23:17 AM
Ummm... to me it dosent seem to me like this guy was either gay or a pervert. He just got it into his head (sorry) that he could do whatever he wanted to bring an alleged sex offender to justice... kinda sounds like today actually... some woman makes accusations of sexual assault and all and any guys in three blocks of the place get thier lives and pants turned inside out.

2005-06-15 02:23:31 AM
I think the word "irreverent" nails it.

It's just funny, and nobody seems to care about seeing Michelangelo's DAVID's ass; so should we wait a couple hundred years before it turns into Classical Art?

/fundie freaks get upset about the darndest things...since it's in an area of town they'd never go anyhoo

So we can't have the 10 Commandments on goverment property, but we can have a bronzed image of a pantless man getting a "medical exam" by another man.

America is turning into Bizzarro world.

2005-06-15 02:27:59 AM
This isn't exactly burning up the airwaves and papers around these parts, as far as I can tell. There was some flutter when it first appeared, but I guess some people would prefer graphic violence or half-naked women on billboards.

Also, love this bit:

Rae said a quick glance at the text on the statue will explain the context to passersby.

"That's the problem with people who don't read," he said.

Such as Rachel Marsden of the National Post, Canada's answer to the Washington Times, except without the religiously-inspired megalomaniac publisher.

Final notes: Rae is out and proud, and this is being posted on MSNBC about a week prior to Toronto's own Pride celebrations.

2005-06-15 02:28:49 AM
Wow... public funds were spent on this piece of poo? What the hell? Wasn't there at least one homeless dude(tte) that could have used some help? Some ancient textbooks that could have been replaced? A single pothole to fill? Another cop to be hired? Does this fall under "Having solved all other problems..."? Wow... what a monstrous load of crap.

2005-06-15 02:29:05 AM
since when did Toronto migrate to America?

2005-06-15 02:30:42 AM
America is turning into Bizzarro world.

Toronto is in the US?

Rae's comment about people not being able to read just took on a whole new dimension thanks to... THE POWER OF FARK!

Dorothy,

Did I miss the part of the "David" statue where he is fondling another man?

2005-06-15 02:32:10 AM
Splixx, this is happening in Canada. Sure, it's part of North America...but, it's in a different part from the one that bans religious imagery on public property.

PlatinumDragon, technically, you're right... Toronto is in America, Jr. :-)

2005-06-15 02:40:35 AM
I would say its pretty tacky, at the very least. The town will be a laughingstock to most folks.

The could have made the monument without depicting a scene that could be taken so many different ways. But that was not their intention, IMO.

2005-06-15 02:56:00 AM
so, how does inspecting another mans genitals for evidence of scratches qualify one as either A)homosexual and/or champion thereof or B)perv? i mean, by those standards any modern police officer/crime scene tech would qualify. canada is dumb.

Oh, groan. I lived in T.O. for five years, and this isn't going to even raise eyebrows, much less...um...other parts.

Living in Alberta now. Bible-belt-is-us. I do a lot of smile-and-nodding, let the sermons roll off. If that plaque had been shown here it wouldn't have lasted a day.

If you want to see jaw-dropping ads/pics, check out Toronto's free weekly paper (the name of which flew out of my head the moment I tried to type it). Personally, I STILL say that even with the Crisco, St. Bernard and rope-and-pully, "Mr. Fun Time" could NEVER pull off what his latest ad promises!

/laughs back at Drunken Chud....see you in 5 weeks!

In some Muslim countries, the punishment for being homosexual is being thrown off a roof at least three stories high. Clerics actually hold meetings to debate details like the height the offending gay person should be dropped from.

So it's interesting to me that while you mention Islam almost as a footnote, you immediately mischaracterize most Christian viewpoints on homosexuality and pretty much lay the blame on Christians.

You bring up some executions of homosexuals that supposedly happened more than 1,000 years ago, then you try to fashion some superficial link to the present-day United States, even though the article is about a *Canadian* city.

All this in a thread about a quasi-pornographic plaque that's pretty damn inappropriate in a public space.

The bottom line: You are not persecuted in this country at all, and in fact except for a few idiots (the kind of people who exist in every society) almost no one will bother you because of your sexuality.

This image is in rather poor taste.

I don't particularly see how he's a hero, either. I don't necessarily think he was a pervert, but his decision isn't worthy of commemoration.

Stupid overzealous gay pride activists ruining it for the rest of us.

Rachel Marsden is the dumb biatch who made up allegations of sexual harrasment against her swim coach, getting him fired and ruining his reputation. It was then revealed that she was in fact stalking him, and he had scads of proof of this. Anything she says should be scrutinized VERY carefully...

2005-06-15 06:10:01 AM
For those who don't follow Canadian politics - yep, that's pretty much everyone - a couple of background stories.

=====
No regrets hiring Marsden: Grewal

She's smart and she's a people person. Those are two reasons MP Gurmant Grewal gave for hiring Rachel Marsden, a U.S. Republican party calendar girl and self-styled political pundit who has been at the centre of two high-profile stalking and harassment controversies, to work as a consultant in his Surrey constituency office.
...
Grewal admits he was fully aware of Marsden's past before he hired her to write press releases and help him prepare power-point presentations for public meetings. Although she faces a court date in connection with charges of harassing former radio personality Michael Morgan between Oct. 1 and Nov. 14, 2002, Grewal notes Marsden hasn't been convicted.

...

Marsden's first brush with controversy came in 1996 after she alleged Simon Fraser University swim coach Liam Donnelly raped her. Donnelly was fired but later reinstated after he produced evidence that Marsden was stalking him and sent him sexually explicit e-mails.
...

=============

Ottawa Air Canada is investigating an incident at Vancouver airport involving a Tory MP embroiled in a taping scandal.

Gurmant Grewal was spotted in a waiting area Saturday trying to get passengers to transport a package to Ottawa.

Airport sources won't confirm if there was a tape in the envelope the B.C. MP was trying to pass along.

"We can confirm that we are currently investigating an incident involving Mr. Grewal," said Air Canada spokeswoman Laura Cooke.
....

A source says Mr. Grewal was booked on a flight to Ottawa and passed through security to a waiting area, where he was overheard asking "a number of" passengers to transport the package.

Mr. Grewal turned over tapes last week to the RCMP from secret recordings he made in meetings with two top Liberals.

Several audio experts have agreed the tapes were altered, prompting the Conservatives to issue a statement admitting that small changes had been made to the recordings.

On the tapes, Mr. Grewal is overheard negotiating possible job opportunities with the Liberal party in exchange for his vote in a crucial confidence showdown last month.
