A measure of their wealth can be gleaned from an anecdote that Mrs Wildenstein told her lawyers: during a cruise in the West Indies, the family's yacht was caught up in a storm. The crew tried to enter ports in Haiti and the Dominican Republic but they were too small. Finally, they struggled into a bay in one of the Virgin Islands. To mark their lucky survival, Daniel bought the island.

Hello Widow Wildenstein!

Surely the price of a painting is based on the ability or desire of the market to pay for it. I wonder whether there's 10 billion euros out there ready to be blown on this shiate?

Oh, there is. You split the collection up and museums around the world would be bidding for pieces of it.

That being said, death to all neo-fascist art nazi's that hoard shiat like this away from public view. Do a GIS for Wildenstien. That's the woman who tried to turn her face into a cats, and failed.

Museums?

You'd need 100 museums willing to spank 10 million on a painting. That gets you only 10% of the way.

I don't disagree that it's possible, especially with individuals wading in, just saying that the more 'rare' paintings on the market, the less rare, and expensive, they become.

/Qualified by virtue of my one-time relationship with an auctioneer. Once kissed her hard against the side of a Bueller ferrari, arms pinned along the roof. 250 GTO. Went for $5 million if I recall. The car, not the girl. She was priceless.

Not quite sure why you would want to lock your art up in a vault, where even you could not enjoy it. Don't owners often permanently loan them out to museums, or hang them in their own homes or offices?

It seems really selfish and perverse to buy an expensive, artistically acclaimed, historically significant masterpiece and then consciously hide it from the world.

/where have you gone, Andrew Carnegie?

From article...
will challenge a French court ruling in favour of their 71-year-old stepmother Sylvia to break up the huge private collection, believed to include Renoirs, Monets and Manets

While you can never get enough pics of Jocelyn, it is a DIFFERENT angry Wildenstein from the article.

I think Jocelyn became a cat woman when she was a cuckold by her husband. She lost her marbles because he left her for a younger woman, so now she is blowing all his cash on turning into Cheetarah (sp?)

The Wildensteins are arguably the most powerful art dealers in the world. It's like a brokerage house keeping their stocks and bonds in a vault.
