This is not national news and I'm really getting sick and tired of this "we can't talk about real issues so lets report on a random missing pretty white girl" garbage.

Insta-green!

Very sad. Unfortunately it was expected.

Very sad too for all the other children who don't make the headlines but meet an equally grim fate.

You'd think after the Jennifer Wilbanks fiasco, the media would take more than a month off from these sorts of stories.

2005-06-11 03:31:21 PM
Just an all-around sad story.

2005-06-11 03:31:51 PM
Sad... sad...

I wonder if the flamewar going on in the other thread is going to come here..

This wouldn't be a story she was black

I blame violent video games and Hollywood.

Gee, what a shock! Who didn't see this result coming? Duh!

Please, can we get to some REAL news and leave stuff like this to the local media where this girl is from? Geez!

2005-06-11 03:32:29 PM
I promise, in lu of her death, I will not kill kittens today. :(

looks like you're trying to start a whole new flamewar in here.

so many news flashes, so little relevance to our daily lives.

2005-06-11 03:32:46 PM
Whatever. Let's get back to talking about Michael Jackson now instead of real news.

People can relate to and connect with these stories. That's all.

who

2005-06-11 03:33:21 PM
Jeff, please put something on the Fark front page like "The Alabama/Aruba girl has been confirmed dead. Don't bother submitting any more headlines/links"

2005-06-11 03:33:22 PM
Who? (reads article) Ah, another young teen girl here in America.

Sad for her and her family, but why is this news?

2005-06-11 03:33:27 PM
may she rest in peace.

for all schools to learn better than to let rich kids to off islands for senior trips, get a friggin brain.

Who?

/reads article

OK. ... Who?

2005-06-11 03:33:49 PM
It is very very sad.

All I can say is, I have an alibi.

2005-06-11 03:34:13 PM
Face facts, the news isn't about news anymore. It's about money, endorsements, and lots and lots of money. They choose the stories they do to get money, not to be responsible reporters.

2005-06-11 03:34:14 PM
I want to feel bad and I guess I do. I have a daughter and I can't imagine what the mom and dad were going through, but then I think, "Why in the world did she go drinking in a strange country and then go away with 3 strange men?" My 8 year old knows better.
She knows not to drink with strangers anyway.

2005-06-11 03:34:53 PM
how did this story grab the news for the last week? it's sad, sure, but we lost like 10 soliders in the last week yet we care about a former hottie

i say former cuz i guess she's less attractive now

//one ticket please

2005-06-11 03:35:08 PM
People can relate to and connect with these stories. That's all.

Strangely enough, people only seem to connect when the stories are about attractive young white women with well-to-do families.

So very sad. No big surprise. Stories like this rarely have a happy ending.

2005-06-11 03:36:08 PM
I think this is truly sad.

Because a girl is dead.

And because there are people beyond her immediate family and community who actually think this qualifies as a story of national interest.

wildsilverfox:

In my eyes, she's only gotten hotter.

Personally, the war doesn't affect me at all. Neither does this girl's death.

I've learned that no matter what you put on the TV screen, a lot of people are gonna biatch that it's newsworthy and wish something else was on the headlines. But biatching is a First Amendment right, so you can't argue with that either.

2005-06-11 03:38:27 PM
And Tom Cruise says that Katy Holmes "digs" Scientology.

2005-06-11 03:38:35 PM

Now boarding for all who are heading straight there...

2005-06-11 03:38:54 PM
Man, there are a lot of pissy people in this thread.

2005-06-11 03:39:06 PM
Just wondering, but what other important stories could be looked at instead of this?

FYI, I agree that this isn't news and we should focus on more important issues...I just don't know what those issues are.

Never! It's all about the ratings!
Hey! Where da white women at?!

ha, a guy using the name "Ron_Mexico_" says WE'RE asshats. :-)

I love the image. You design it?

2005-06-11 03:39:53 PM
I'll give my theory on why this is news.

Aruba relies heavily on tourism - a young dead girl is going to possible damage their economy, severely.

On the other side, who cares what color she is; she's dead. Stfu.

2005-06-11 03:40:00 PM
C'mon, folks. This became irritating only because it dragged on so long. It serves fine as a cautionary tale. What we DON'T need is the obligatory funeral coverage this coming week.

/sad, no matter her color or whether you think she was hot

2005-06-11 03:40:07 PM
I would like to know what the fark happened.

2005-06-11 03:40:25 PM
So 1 dead American in Aruba, 1500 dead Americans in Iraq, which is more newsworthy

2005-06-11 03:40:49 PM
everyone biatches and complains about this not being news until it is their child that they need help finding. Then suddenly the media is the greatests evar invention since the wheel.

Yes media is shiat now, yes all complaints are valid. But you are not going to change it by biatching. Change it by not paying attention to the articles so you can biatch about them. Things magically go away when people dont pay attention to them.

Personally, i think these type of stories might be reported more often, if they not only report on cute/white/females going lost, but they should do it for everyone else. People of other ethnicities especialy. The way it is not gives off this aura of bulshiat about the lives of white chicks being more important in the grand scheme of things than anything else. That is utter bullshiat.

nick4753: naw, wish I could take credit for that. most any image I post is something i've found in a thread on here somewhere already...

Sigh...

Ok... next story...

\sorry for being jaded

2005-06-11 03:41:33 PM
Ok, I'll be the one:

Alphax:

Sad for her and her family, but why is this news?

It's not news. It's Fark.

And although I agree if she weren't a pretty blonde white girl this wouldn't be Front Page news, I disagree with getting on to Fark (or anywhere else) and badmouthing the situation because you don't view the story important enough.
Just because YOU don't care doesn't mean others don't.

I also think there should be a channel where all they do is tell stories of missing people.
Or maybe just post missing peoples pictures, 24/7 with phone numbers under each one.
If ONE person gets recognized and found, isn't it worth it.

/yah, but only if they're pretty blonde and white, right?

2005-06-11 03:41:38 PM
Well, that's what happens to sluts who's idea of a fun time is getting krunked up and going with strange men. Frankly, it's probably better this way.

2005-06-11 03:42:00 PM
Actually, I like this story, I hope it would make parents realize that there's no viable reason teenagers should be running around out and about with complete freedom. School? Okay. Work? Okay. Occasional night out? Okay. But running around everywhere and anywhere, going to foreign countries to get drunk and have illicit sex? Going clubbing when you're not even legal age to drink? It doesn't make sense.

2005-06-11 03:42:00 PM
I don't mean to be disrespectful but should I know who this person is?
