yet another example of how government policy does NOT cater to public opinion. Throughout American history, public opinion has ALWAYS been for less immigration. But the only time the elite in control of the govt ever heeded it was in the 1920s, when there were so many European immigrants that were in favor of socialism. THEN they slowed it down.

And there are many other points on which govt policy goes against public opinion--taxation of the rich and corporations, universal healthcare, etc.

THere is an easy way to check illegal immigration--mandate checking of SSNs via a computer system. A pilot program to do that was so successful that the business lobbies got it shut down.

When are Americans going to wake up and realize that the elite are NOT on their side? And that it is our Constitution and electoral/governmental system that helps them do this to us?

i found no mention of government policy in the article, let alone any mention of anyone in the article having a desire to reduce immigration. they're taking the jobs because they're available and they apply for them. employers are hiring them based on need. what were you saying?

Reserved for students??? WTF does that mean? Let's remind businesses that they are obliged to set aside some jobs for the laziest, stupidest, most apathetic segment of the population. What company wouldn't love to lose money training a part-timer to work for 3 months just so thay can save up for an iPod?

Yeah, I am painfully aware of your inability to comprehend at different levels of abstraction. No problem. I can bring this discussion down to your level:
Immigration, both legal and illegal, can be stopped and slowed greatly. The govt can do this. But they do not. If they did, then those jobs would have gone to American citizens, and not to immigrants because the immigrants would not be in America. Therefore, if they HAD done so, IAW the wishes of the American majority, then this article would not have said that immgrants were getting a lot of the new jobs, because there would not be as many immigrants.

See, now you understand, don't you?

let alone any mention of anyone in the article having a desire to reduce immigration.

If you were able to read at different levels of abstraction, you would have caught my implication that a solid supermajority of Americans want less immigration. You may google up said polls to your heart's desire....

they're taking the jobs because they're available and they apply for them.

And if the govt had heeded the wishes of the supermajority of Americans, then these immigrants would not be in America. Which would pose a difficulty in taking those jobs. See?

No need for a generation war. This is just what happens when we lose 3 million jobs under a republican administration. The great thing is that for the jobs that can't be outsouced people will fight over and wages can be cut becuase people are desperate for ANYTHING as long as they can pay the bills... Welcome to the new america. As long as the stock market is OK everything is great. Rest assured that everyone at the top is making a boat load.

Yeah, lets just go tear down that statue in New York Harbor, while we're at it.

Many immigrants are American citizens. And you do realize that immigrating to the US is generally not an easy task, right? Now illegal immigration is another thing altogether. However, most illegal immigrants are, IIRC, from Mexico, and hopefully the NAFTA will have the effect of slowly boosting Mexico's economy to the point that it's no longer profitable enough for Mexicans to illegally cross the border.

Besides, I'm less concerned about illegals taking jobs than I am bout them being exploited by shady companies and individuals.

Let's start our crusade to ban immigration by building a time machine and sending the ancestors of the anti-immigration crew back to their own damn country. We don't want any of their kind here. Then let's take the lead of their home countries and impose religion on our population.

Oh wait. That's already started. My fault.

Absolutely! Over 70% of Americans want less immigration. And guess what? It has ALWAYS been that way! The elite hardly ever do what the American people want unless it favors the elite. And when they need to, they manufacture consent using the media, and "outrage incidents" such as the sinking of the Lusitania, Pearl Harbor, Tonkin Gulf, WTC911, etc.

So please, let's do tear down that stupid statue!

If they did, then those jobs would have gone to American citizens, and not to immigrants because the immigrants would not be in America.

Many immigrants are American citizens.

No kidding! I had NO idea!

And you do realize that immigrating to the US is generally not an easy task, right?

Oh, it was easy as pie for my wife. It only took 3 years and thousands of dollars. And she still can't vote. Gee, I wonder why? She gets taxed, but doesn't get represented....

However, most illegal immigrants are, IIRC, from Mexico,

No kidding!

Nothing wrong with that, except it would be the rich elite who get "trampled on". We really need to "trample on" the rich a bit. Well, more than a bit. We actually need to do a Marie Antoinette on most of them.

DO you own a house? Was there ever a time when you did not own that house? Was there ever a time when there was no house in that location?

So, by your logic (your logic being: if you or your ancestors at some point emigrated to this country, then you cannot be against immigration today), you cannot stop ME from moving into YOUR house today. Because in the past you did not live in your house, and so therefore you should not be expected to stop someone else from moving into your house.

cryofan, I generally enjoy reading your posts because you are intelligent and well informed. However, I have an issue with you. You seem to think that it's a crime to be rich. This is a capitalist society and most millionaires in America are self made (read the book "The Millionaire Next Door). Granted, there are some wealthy members of special interest groups who throw tons of money at their legislators to get favors done. So vote the legislators out. The fact is, the majority of rich Americans are hard working small and medium sized business owners and are usually too busy running their companies to trample the nation's poor. Even though I'm not rich I am self employed and like to keep the dollars I earn and not turn them over in taxes.

Im in charge of hiring at a porn shop in NJ and I cannot believe how hard it is to find employees who are reasonably intelligent and want top work.
All Im looking for is someone to work full time, the 4pm-midnight shift, we pay $10 an hour. Not great but a decent wage and more than Wally or McDs. Out of over 300 applicants I cant find a single one who doesnt moan about working on the weekends or can get here on time. Its truly a sad state of affairs.
By the way if anybody in NJ wants a job.

I have an issue with you. You seem to think that it's a crime to be rich.

Hmm. Well, I do not think that it is a crime to be rich, on its face. But I do think that most superrich are criminals. Traitors, to exact. Same goes for 90% of the elite politicians (pres, congress, govs, etc). And same for CEOs. I think that they should all be tried in a court of law for treason. Call me crazy.....

This is a capitalist society

And I am not advocating a command style socialist economy. We aint ready for it. We need to evolve a bit before we are ready for that.

and most millionaires in America are self made (read the book "The Millionaire Next Door).

I don't see the relevance. I don't really care if they are self made or not. And most of these millionaires are just retired working people with homes inflated in value due to immigration. THat is not what I am talking about.

Granted, there are some wealthy members of special interest groups who throw tons of money at their legislators to get favors done.

That is hardly a worthy description. What we are talking about is the history of America and standard operating procedure.

So vote the legislators out.

Groan. Next to impossible, the way the government is set up with bicameral houses, 3 branches of govt, single member political districts, a president not elected by the people (by electors, not the people, and twice the electors have gone against the vote), with staggered terms, long terms, not subject to recall, etc.

THat is why Madison, Hamilton, et al., set it up this way: a system of checks and balances to keep the majority from doing anything. A deliberately inefficient govt in order to maintain the status quo. And the status quo at the time was a bunch of slaveowners and merchants enslaving whites and blacks and exploiting everyone they could. And a small percent of the population owned the vast majority of wealth in those days. Looks like they did their job right in building a govt to maintain the wealthy in their status quo.
John Quincy Adams was more precise: The Constitution was "calculated to increase the power, power and wealth of those who have any already."

The fact is, the majority of rich Americans are hard working

Who cares how hard they work? Serial killers can work hard, too. Meaningless....

small and medium sized business owners and are usually too busy running their companies to trample the nation's poor.

THat is why they pay dues to business lobbies.

Even though I'm not rich I am self employed and like to keep the dollars I earn and not turn them over in taxes.

Well, maybe if your business takes a bad turn (that has been known to happen, ya know), and then you get cancer, and you have no money to pay for treatment, then maybe on your dying bed you wished you lived in Canada or Denmark where they have universal healthcare, and pay for it by taxation....

Or maybe you cannot see that far into the future. Maybe your CULTURE teaches you not to consider that perspective. Imagine that--a culture that encourage certain perspectives and discourges other perspective. Hmm....that culture would sure be to the benefit of the rich. Gosh, I wonder if the rich would ever exert forces to build such a culture over the longterm....interesting....

Gee, do you think it has anything to do with the fact that it is pretty darn hard to maintain a place to live in NJ AND a car at $10/hr? Hard to catch a bus at midnight....

And the fact that they are probably taking a chance on getting shot during a robbery? Do you know that you have a much better chance at being killed in the line of duty as a retail cashier than you would as a cop?
