They wouldn't have any power to run them anyway.

2002-04-07 05:52:04 PM
yet another arguement for privatizing the public school system

2002-04-07 05:52:47 PM
For $19.3 million they could move the students to canada when it got hot.

2002-04-07 05:56:15 PM
Dude, I would sell them TWICE as many air conditioers for half that.

^_^

2002-04-07 06:00:06 PM
I thought maybe 'zero' was a brand name at first, i guess not.

$19.3 million as a contract buyout to grease the wheels to a $155 million contract. Not at all unusual in the bureaucratic cesspool that is the school system.

to Quote Jimmy Buffet from Fruitcakes

"out in California I hear they got it all,

I don't get the problem. Isn't this the Californian thing to do? No A/C means no CFCs to destroy the ozone layer, no electricity means no CO2 "pollution". And best of all, the middle-class kids get a first-hand experience of what it's like to be poor. That alone should encourage them to get an education.

2002-04-07 06:27:09 PM
Ah... my former city government at work. Just makes you want to pound some bureaucrat heads, doesn't it?

2002-04-07 06:27:41 PM
The liberal's solution: Send more money!

2002-04-07 06:29:06 PM
Typical California. And they still won't have decent books in the classrooms or enough schools to hold the children of the illegals.

By the way, "perked the interest?" Maybe "piqued?" The writer was apparently edu-ma-cated in the LA school system.

Those who can, do.
Those who can't do, teach.
Those who can't do and can't teach, run for the school board.

I spent 5 bucks on no air conditioners today. But at least I got lunch for it.

2002-04-07 07:25:28 PM
I love how all you idiots are using northern California's prejudices against southern California. Where did you get the idea the socal is mostly liberals? The Army, Navy and Air Force bases making up a significant portion of the population? The defense contractors who at one point employed 60% of socal's population?

Or is it that you actually don't know anything about California yet still want to make sweeping prejudicial statements about it?

Quick1: I take offense to that(having two teachers in my family, my father AND his brother. I don't want to go into the field for that very reason, I've seen what that looks like on the inside.).

It SHOULD read,
"Those who can, do."
"Those who can, AND explain it to someone else, teach." admittably, this is not always true. there ARE a lot of totally incompetent teachers. Eh, there's a lot of completely incompetent "doers" as well, so that's moot.
"Those who can't do and can't teach, become politicians."

You all DID notice the heavy political maneuvering mentioned in this story, right? Everybody trying to jockey for some glory and some porkbarreling, instead of the sensible solution that Nutdip noted. The School Board didn't manage to do a damn thing, in fact, they were overridden by politicians at every level. Politicians who, I'm sure, never had to sit a day in the overheated classrooms that were the center of the entire debate, and whose first concern was their own personal benefit.

Eventually, schools went, "The hell with this. We're gonna do it locally, like we're supposed to, instead of throwing more good money after bad while baking in classrooms with no aircon." Which, of course, happens to be Nutdip's way.

End result: 19 million bucks spent chasing a politically embroiled crapfest, and schools go without aircon for two years. Two years of the schools being miserably hot, and the frontline teachers being the ones standing in it trying to teach overheated, cranky youngsters.

And you just said WHAT?

No, here's the lesson: Politicians are worthless, and teachers get shafted.

Please don't take my name in Vane Nutdip.

2002-04-07 07:33:45 PM
Hey Nespone, did you even read the article? This was a debacle by the Los Angeles school board (most of whom are Democrats, by the way), not George W. And dragging Enron into the discussion??? Puhleeze. Go back to your Young Communists League meeting, or burn some synagoges or whatever it is you do for amusement and leave the discussion to the adults.

Whatever Dad... Psh.

California is going to have the largest bond issues in the state's history on the next two ballots. Yeah, let's give these wazoos more money.

LA School Exam:

You have an AK-47 with 30 rounds in the clip. You bust off 13 caps and some biatches who looked at you funny, how many more caps you got?

2002-04-07 07:52:26 PM
not so funny if you're a teacher, now is it? Lessee, what do you do for a living again?

Oh, band geek. Guess you get your share, then. But the point remains: stop blaming the teachers for crapfests that occur WAY above their levels, and just happen to leave them screwed. It's like blaming the waiter if the general manager of a restaurant allows his napkin supply to run out: the waiter can't do a damn thing about it, not even cuss out the dummy that got him into this fix. But it's the waiter that can't do his job right anymore, and the waiter that gets to explain it to everybody. And you're gonna pin the blame on who, again?

I'm a firm believer in taking the personal possessions of those who had a fudiciary interest in this matter and auctioning the possessions off until the debt has been repaid.
Goes for Enron also.
And the S&L scandals.

This country doesn't have a just system of justice. In this case, only the taxpayers will be screwed.

2002-04-07 08:09:36 PM
Sounds like something the crime-ridden Philadelphia school district would manage to pull off

2002-04-07 09:22:09 PM
Privatization comes to mind. I have heard that in many cases, the people who are elected to school boards are generally busy-body rich housewives with who knows what kind of agenda as opposed to people with actual business experience.

Hey - this ain't funny -- my kid may get stuck going to an LA school...

BTW this district also paid over $150,000,000 to build the world's most expensive high school in history. Then they remembered it was on a highly volatile, toxic oil field and may scrap the whole thing...

we are currently paying something like $8,000 per year per kid to barely educate them....there is a big move afoot to breakup the district but the political hacks don't want to let go of any power...

No air conditioning - you know its gets like 110 degrees her in the summer...

2002-04-07 10:02:11 PM
But it's a dry heat.
