next up, executions at New Lifer churches...

One bill restricts abortion; a second calls for a ban on same-sex marriage.

Ahhh, the blurring of the line between church and state. Where restrictions on personal liberty and hate-centered legislation take seed and flourish.

Hooray for thick skulled rednecks!

2005-06-05 10:22:02 AM
Perrys signature of that bill is merely ceremonial; proposed constitutional amendments are sent directly to voters by the legislature and do not require the governors involvement.

Dubya's only political experience prior to being President was as Governor of Texas.

It shows.

So, he is putting on a dog and pony show? If I was a member of that church I would be mad that the asshat is using my church as a stage prop.

Style over substance wins. Common sense shrugs shoulders, leaves Texas.

Wow, I picked a great time to move to Texas.

The critics are generally those who object to people of faith participating in government or in the electoral process, Walt said.

And another way to put is that is that the non conservative Christian people of this country don't like having fundamentalist crap forced down our throats. Since the conservative Christians have decided to rename their selves 'people of faith', does that mean one can only be a Christian if one is a Bush worshipper?

Charlie Prior, Calvarys business administrator, said the churchs tax status would not be affected because the event is being held at the church school, not inside the sanctuary.

Well I have to say that the moral clarity crowd sure knows how to indulge in situational ethics when it suits their purpose. What a bunch of phony bolognas.

I don't think Fark makes a big enough asinine tag for this story.

The more I see s*it like this, the more I'm not going to be surprised to see a civil war over all this coming.

2005-06-05 10:44:44 AM
There are so many things wrong with this it's sad.

'People of Faith' is a ridiculous title. Every person alive on Earth has faith of some kind.

You know what I can't figure out? Why are there so many people who call themselves libertarian and support this current administration? Can a little lower taxes actually trump anything in some people's minds?

2005-06-05 10:54:46 AM
This is just Governor Perry pandering to religous folks.
His poll numbers are pretty bad and the elections are coming up.

mutilato: Can a little lower taxes actually trump anything in some people's minds?

For some people (and even here on Fark I've seen this) they don't give a shiat about anything other than how much of their money the government is taking.

The whole farking country could go to hell as far as they are concerned, as long as they have what they earned.

So, yeah, some people are that selfish.

Sucks to actually care about humanity these days when so many people are hell bent on destroying it.

2005-06-05 11:07:30 AM
The second, subject to approval of voters in the fall, would amend the state Constitution to ban same-sex marriage and civil unions.

Hmm, wonder which way that vote's gonna go?

If liberals can keep their noses out of Texas' business, the country can survive a meaningless ceremony.

mutilato:

i think the entrance requirement for being a type 14b Libertarian is twofold:

1) agree with everything the bush administration has ever done, no matter how un-libertarian it is.
2) smoke pot.

The guy is a complete tool. But I do admit I would go and cheer him on if he signed the bill while handling poisonous snakes, because that's a brand of evangelical fervor that we have to look for to sate our that's farked up entertainment factor now that circus geeks aren't pulling into town anymore.

Most Libertarians are basically transitional Republicans that tent when they think of "Atlas Shrugged." You know the type, the guy that wouldn't give a drowning man a hand unless they figured the guy would thank them by emptying his wallet in their lap or putting them in his will.

They also tend to be they in self-denial in that they still want to smoke a little weed every now and then and don't want anyone to fark with their last vestiges of "intensity" before they finally just kick it in. It's like the former hippie with the rat-tail or the former lard-ass body builder that rocks the Jams, they just haven't fully signed on yet but give them a few years.

What if you're a liberal in Texas?

Try a prisoner exchange program with conservatives in Massachusetts.

I tool "civil war" to mean an interstate conflict, like the Civil War.

I am so glad that I got out of there.

Completely embarrassed that Rick Perry graduated from my beloved Texas A&M.

Texas has officially become an easily misled, third world country.

I hate to think of myself as a single-issue voter, lumping myself in with the abortion-nuts or the save-the-whale-voters, but taxes really are the single-most important thing to me when I go to the polls, and yes, I'll even admit it on Fark.

After income taxes, sales taxes, property taxes, capital gains taxes, taxes on interest and dividends, taxes on individual items like gasoline, car registration which is a form of tax, what do I have left over from MY money? Probably less than 50%.

People seem to easily get used to taxes, especially when they don't see them being levied. I say we make people actually WRITE A CHECK for that 25% or so of their income they are forced to hand over every year, rather than sneakily "witholding" it bit by bit every paycheck. Only when they're done writing all those digits into their checkbook will they fully appreciate the reaming they are getting by their government.

I also think we should all get a tax statement at the end of the year which lists in excruciating detail every item of income, property, and sales tax we paid that year, with a grand total in big red numbers at the bottom. This might motivate more people to pay attention to taxes.

Until then, I'll count myself among those who cringe at the evil, dishonest, dangerous, and antisocial things the Republicans do, but vote for them (or preferably Libertarians) over Democrats every election.

Dems: If you want my vote, take less of my money each year. I'm with you on almost every other issue, and I'm sure there are many more like me.

2005-06-05 12:55:34 PM
If churches are going to be involved in government, it's time to start taxing them.

Not to start a flame war, but how many spending bills has Bush vetoed? Republicans aren't raising your taxes yet, to be sure, but they spend like Democrats, and that's going to cost you in the long run. Look where I live in Minnesota. T-Paw has found that his no-new-taxes pledge hasn't really worked out so well, and to make up for lack of income, he is trying every zany scheme he can possibly come up with, including trying to come up with what he calls "user fees". The rest of us realise that the fees are really taxes.

"no new taxes" is bullshiat everywhere. Ask New Jersyians why their property taxes are so insane. Ask New Yorkers why you can get a huge refund from the Feds, but wind up owing much more after state and local taxes slam you. Sorry, whenever I hear a candidate say they will lower/not raise taxes, I immediately wonder where they will put the hidden (or not-so-hidden) revenue generators that screw us regardless.

At least folks who say they will raise your taxes are up front about how you will get bent over.

MrBeefy: What if you're a liberal in Texas?

Well, then you are less than human. So you don't matter. If you hadn't noticed, you've been dehumanized by the rednecks. They've done the same thing to blacks, jews, and gay people. Once you aren't human anymore, then your opinion and life no longer matter to them. See how easy that is? All it takes is the right hate filled agenda, put a good beat to it, and the uneducated bigots will fall over themselves to support your fake cause.

stilletto you cannot count yourselfs among the people who cringe - since you voted for him

and thinking his 'tax cuts' helped you shows you don't understand basic economics - deficit what? shrinking economy what? outsourced jobs what? morons who don't understand complex economics interactions what?

I have an idea. Everyone that doesn't want to pay taxes can move to a tiny island and support themselves without any roads or mail service or police or fire fighters or military to protect them from the crazy ass-hat the next island over.

And also, to remain threadically topical, the governor signing bills at a church is idiotic.

Thank you.

people of faith

I have yards and yards of faith. Don't think it's in the right thing, though, because I'm Pagan.

So I get the sneaking feeling that I am not invited to the "faith" party by these here Texans.

yep, the governor farked up. all he had to do was switch from a church to a mosque and he would be labeled a hero.

It's Machiavellian politics at it's finest. As Dubya has demonstrated, you only need 51% of the vote to ram your agenda down the the throat of the other 49%.

In Texas, you get that 51% by pretending to love Jesus.

It's not good and it's not smart, but that's the way it is.

That's fine, man. But I don't want to hear you moaning about poorly funded schools or crappy roadways, okay? A disproportionate amount of the tax money is probably lining the bank accounts of our politicians, but at least some of it DOES go towards making sure our public services and streets are up to snuff.

Let's just give them Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky and South Carolina. All the fundies can move there and the rest of the country can simply go about our lives.

Here in California our governor uses the whole state for a stage. Then he goes to other states for campaign money while calling the teachers, nurses, firefighters, and cops "Special Interests".. Basically, anybody that doesnt agree with him (or doesnt give him buttloads of cash) is a "special interest"

Perry spokeswoman Kathy Walt said: "There are a number of critics who would object to this bill-signing whether it were in a private school, a public school or a Wal-Mart parking lot, because they are opposed to pro-life and pro-family legislative issues."

Deflect attention from the real issue much?

I can't wait for the Dems to jump on the bandwagon and start running fundamentalists too, seeing how it's the only way to electoral success in America.
