"the vehicle headed toward at least 17 police vehicles..."

Righteous shooting.

Little snotnose farktard will won't steal and commit mayhem with heavy equipment any time soon.

That shows TREMENDOUS resolve on the part of the police. They could have easily gone over the line and just had EVERY cop light him up. Sincerely, nice job on their part.

Not that his mother won't sue the crap out of them, though.

least it wasnt like that guy outwest who built a wrecking machine from a bulldozer. I think it was called Killdozer or something like that. Wound up taking out half of the town untill police finally got one.

you also cant forget about the tank that drove through LA a few years back. Only if he didnt try to jump the middle divider he would have gotten away.

..parents will probably sue CNN for broadcasting the story about crazy guy that did the same thing last year.

Clearly this is just a confused teenager copying what he sees on the news.

Dude, if I had stolen an earth scraper, driven it into a telephone pole, and then got shot by cops, I would have prayed for death, because when my mom got done with me death would have been kinder.

Did the cops even consider if the kid knew how to stop the thing? Its evident from the video I've seen on TV today that it was a kid driving and not an adult.

Its not known where the boy got the earthmover, but police are checking with nearby construction sites.

As opposed to local pool supply stores perhaps? Whereinthehell else would he get it?

Better to not assume anything, and shoot him, than watch him roll over a family in their car and go "we weren't sure if he knew how to stop".

An uncle of mine is a cop in Long Beach. He once told me "it's better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6".

Wasnt this actually a lost scene from the movie A Christmas Story.

"Hey kid, your gonna put your eye out with that thing"
"Screw you copper, Your never gonna take me alive!!!"

Annnndd cut.

Oh, and umm, Bob the builder has no comment about his involvment.

DUMBASS? Au contrair - other than the fact that he didn't really benefit from his crime, and that he endangered innocent people, and that he got caught and shot in the process - other than those minor details, I'd say he commited the perfect crime - THE PERFECT CRIME...

The kid was in communication with the police, he just wouldn't stop.

Also, the cops wanted to try and hop aboard the CAT but permission was denied.

They thought he was going to go over the vehicles, with the officers in them, said assistant police chief Kermit Miller. They felt threatened so they shot.

Miller said the officers fired at the driver and were not trying to disable the vehicle.

Not defending the little bastid but how exactly were the police threatened if they were driving alongside and there is no mention of the kid attempting to ram cars. The cars are mobile and have doors, move or get out. Were they shooting from inside the cars?

Also, interesting is that they shot at the driver, who they knew to be a kid, yet when a driver is shot the vehicle continues to ramble, just uncontrolled. Disabling would stop the vehicle.

Serves the kid right, but odd choice for the cops to shoot first, think later.

I was operating one of those (Cat 613) about 10 years ago when a hydraulic hose busted, sprayed fluid into the engine compartment, and started a major fire. I managed to jump off without personal damage, but by the time the fire department got there, the machine was totally destroyed.

According to the video (first one) they shot him when he turned the earthmover onto the cops. It was quite obvious he was doing it intentionally.

Those things actually drive like cars...4-speed selective transmission. Running in 4th on an open road it'll do about 35mph.

Did the cops even consider if the kid knew how to stop the this? Puleeze, get real. The kid knew full well what he was doing, he had to at least have known where the brakes were if he found the gas, they really arent that much harder to stop and start than a car, only diff really is size and how to stick it in gear, which if he could figure that part out on his own he sure as HELL knew where the brakes were since you cant stick it in gear without having your foot on the brakes....

Have you ever seen what things things can do? if it wasnt an open cab he could have driving thru the police station if he wanted withou a scratch. What else did you want them try try? Stop sticks? Hahahaha, yeah that'll work..

Or maybe they should have just offered him a nice piece of apple pie?

guice,

only 40ish? Didn't look like it was going that fast in the second video.

I haven't watched the videos cuz bittorrent is killing my machine, but I doubt you watched the entire event as it unfolded, so at some point it may have gotten up to 40 but you didn't see it.

An officer should have just jumped onto it and yanked the brat out of the seat.

If you rtfa you would have seen that they considered it but that it was too risky because it was weaving from side to side. You make it sound like this is an every-day event that the police should be used to and know exactly how to respond.

Pull him out of the multi-ton truck, cause him to lose control and send the earth-mover careening through a neighborhood full of houses? Great idea.

/just sayin'

My first thought was, "Why did they shoot him rather than stop the thing some other way?" (I am sure about half the people here think that. The other half are just mad that THEY PERSONALLY didn't get to shoot the kid.)

But then I remembered that any time a cop fires a gun, he has to go explain it. Given the publicity, I think he'll be explaining it to many many people, and the explanations will be carried on the news media, etc. I am also absolutely certain that the cop in question, and his chain of command, were and are painfully aware of this fact, and had time to consider their alternatives.

It's therefore very likely that they will have one hell of a good reason, because if they don't, they'll be unemployed quite soon, and the city will be liable for a lot of money.

So I'm not that worried about the whole thing. I realize it's far less entertaining than getting all amped up on vitriol, but.

I also can't understand why you people are defending him, asking why the police chose to shoot him rather than the vehicle.

Look at that picture and tell me where you see a weak spot that, if shot, would disable the vehicle (and have it slowly expend all it's inertia in a safe way).

The only one I see would be driver. May have been a failed attempt at 'suicide-by-cop.'
