(ABC)   Saudis outraged at proposal to let women drive. "Driving by women leads to evil," a man wrote in a letter to the editor. "Can you imagine what it will be like if her car broke down? She would have to seek help from men"   (abcnews.go.com) divider line 469

Good point about the school uniforms. I think that the French have different ideas than we do regarding freedom of expression. They feel that freedom is gained by not feeling the oppression of someone else's expression. (If that makes sense.) Americans, on the other hand, don't mind if your expression slightly offends someone else. Also, I think that the French wanted to make a firm statement about the separation of church and state, a line that has been thoroughly blurred by conservative christian politics and liberal idealism here in the states. On one hand, we say that there is no religion in our state, and on the other hand, our president openly prays about national decisions.

At a school my kids attended in Florida they had items of clothing they could choose from (polo shirts, dress shirts, and different pants/shorts/skirt oprions) and a handful of colors.

My school was so strick they wouldn't let you wear skirts. Unless you were female.

I went from a TFer to a Liter just a few weeks ago. I blew $40 on a one-month subscription to a porn site that I immediately regretted, so decided to punish my finiancial foolishness by cancelling my TF subscription for 40/5 = 8 months.

Wow that takes SERIOUS balls to admit to. It almost cancels out your paying for internet porn. Almost.

I don't think this has ever happened before, but I agree with you 100%.

Why the outrage over a "thing"? Flag, Bible, whatever...

jst3p: Lighten up and remember everything is funny, just maybe not to you.

Again (not) sorry, but I don't find it funny. I don't find the perpetuating of completely BS stereotypes in the least bit funny, and that includes something racist or sexist. I mean, I guess I could understand if that is a cretinous way to express a certain uncomfortability with the subject matter...

So, yeah I see your point Omega Ohm, but to be fair anyone making a tasteless joke is Asshole of the Moment, so it's all good...;)

Medina and Mecca may be in Saudi Arabia this doesn't however mean all Moslems are thrilled with the fact Wahabis, a small minority of all Moslems, are running them. A Suffi or Suni is not exactly liking it. Nevemrind were Mohammed to show up, he be grabbing a sword and beheading a few people. Like the crown prince.

Personally, yes. But as the driving article brings out, the resistance of temptation to sin incumbent upon women, too. They believe that allowing them to drive will potentially expose them to temptation.

Maybe it's just the infidel Catholic in me, but in regards to temptation, it exists everywhere, that's the nature of life. It's up to me to resist it, not drape a cloth or hide away anything that can cause it. That's like admitting you can't deal with it or control yourself, or blaming someone else for tempting you after you succumb to it.

Actually a couple guys in my HS wore dresses the last month of school. I don't think it was a homosexual thing as they seemed pretty hetero and it was a liberal school, we had several "out" students and they never got hasseled or anything.

these two guys ust wanted to see what would happen. The administration didn't like it but couldn't do anything since the dress code didn't say anything about it.... until next year anyway.

At the time I admired their courage, but looking back they were part of the "in" crowd and I realize that anything they would have done would have been "cool".

As for the going ape shiat over a thing, I just don't get it.

Destroy a piece of art, I'll be pissed. Destroy a copy of a piece of anything, so what. I might even sell you your next copy.

The only religious text I can see worth getting pissed over would be the Tora, since each copy has a long history and was hand written, etc. I'd guess a multigenerational family bible would be treated the same way.

Omega Ohm: I'm tempted.

Sexist and proud of it, apparently.

There's a huge difference between saying, 'I'm temped.' and 'She tempted me.' Societies where the latter is more prevalent are dangerous places for woman to live.

jst3p: I'd be in line with dress standards. But enforcement is always a chore. You don't want to regulate down to the level of socks, but the minute a kid finds a loophole in the standard, they will try to exploit it.

cyberlost: Like I said, I can completely understand why the French went that route. I'm not crazy about the precedent it sets. But yes, separation of church and state is never a simple matter. I suppose we should consider ourselves lucky to live in societies where the debate is still relevant and -- most of all -- allowed.

Very well put - I couldn't agree more. When my friend explained the prayer thing to me, that was my first reaction. What sort of test of the soul or piety is it if you remove the very possiblity of temptation?

I check out girls in church. Tell me you've never scoped out who's on line for communion while kneeling and praying after you've recieved it, and you're a liar.

Could be, it was pretty simple in the example I gave. In violation and you go hom. But you don't ust get to leave, a parent has to pick you up. I bet it didn't happen twice very often.

Then again, like I said, it wasn't a uniform, it was a dress code. I thought it was a fair balance, and in my opnion it helped the kids focus on school even if it only helped a little.

Of course I can't back that up with any statistcs, so take it for what it is worth.

I will also add that being parents on a budget it was nice to send our kids to school and not worry about them getting teased because we couldn't buy them $60 jeans. But I guess thats a selfish motivation.

321keyturn:

When the Arabs run out of oil, they'll sink back into the obscurity they so richly deserve.

Actually they already are sinking. There is a pretty strong thesis that the reason violence is on the upswing is the Arabs, as a society, are turning their back on the western world.

After all we threaten to free their women, teach their women, allow their women to travel, and in general make the situation worse for men. Or at least different, I don't like my women denegrated and I would guess some Arab men would feel the same if they had experience with the option. So you take a bunch of men, who have seen the west, or at least HBO, give them nothing to do (high unemployment) no career, you're going to have trouble.

A similar thing will be happening in China, particularly as there is now a growing shortage of women. Turns out one couple one child, and a cultural desire for son's means, somehow, a lot of girls never made it to their first birthday. A lot of young, single, frustrated men are going to cause trouble.

Technically no, the stipulation was that you'd recieved communion and where in a spot where you could keep an eye on the line.

But I'm sure gay Catholics do it too.

But, but Saudi Arabia is our friend. Not terrorists. No way. Nu-uh. They're certainly not a brutal dictatorship that oppresses their population in any way. Not like Saddam did. And they don't support terrorism, no way. Not like Saddam did. It's a good thing we're making all those evil Iraqi citzens pay with their lives. Wow, I'm so proud to be an American. We torture the evil right out of those terrorists in Gitmo and Abu Ghraib. But no not Saudi Arabia. We love them. They're prince holds hands with our President. Not as far as my schlong is concerned. It doesn't care if it's the former or the latter and I don't either. My wallet cares though. If it's her tempting me, it'll be that much easier and a shorter chase to the goods.

Then we can ignore them just like we do Africa.

Isn't that the same arguement given against the anti-gay marraige ammendment?

For the record I am in favor of gay marriage, I just thought it was interesting to see considering the thread started with:

Wow, you could almost say that changing the way things have always been is an attack on the sanctity of driving.

If that was your intent, touche`

Real reason Saudi men don't want women driving. They are afaid all their women will jump in a car & drive to a country where the men will eat pussy. Saudi men do not eat pussy. Both are missing out big time. Saudi women should hold out on sex. [can't believe I suggested that one.] Buzzy.

What a mindset: living in extreme paranoia that every male over age 8 in the whole frigging country is trying to fark your woman and she's looking for any possible opportunity to let them.

I believe these are the same people cut the clitorises off baby girls so that when they grow up they don't get too much pleasure from sex, which I guess would make them so sex-crazed they would have to be locked in a cage to keep from farking every guy in the world.

Well, they ARE segregated by gender from able.to.walk until wedding.day.
