That's a perfectly cromulent headline.

none of those kids is getting laid until the spell wears off

Spellbound (not the Hitchcock one, smartypants) is one of my favorite movies ever.

Spelling bees suck. Let's say you have 50 children, and have a spelling bee. You just created 49 losers who are going to go home and cry. Way to encourage them to learn.

2005-06-01 07:42:09 PM
Great headline submitter

2005-06-01 07:44:20 PM
nice headline indeed.

2005-06-01 07:45:20 PM
Couldn't we call it the NSB so it'll work with the previous two headlines? C'mon Admins, abbreviate it!

2005-06-01 07:45:40 PM
Ya gotta love when the little bastards use shiat like "please use it in a sintance" or "defintison please" to stall.

/Either yu can spell or you carent.

Dimethyltryptamine

Or it could encourage them to go home and try harder for next time, nice defeatist attitude though.

We should also stop grading students altogether because a teacher could possibly hurt a student's feelings...way to encourage them to learn.

[And if we don't stop grading, we at least have to stop using angry colors to write with.]

exellent improv submitter.

you laugh, but wasn't there an issue in the UK recently about how teachers can't use red pens because it hurts kids feelings.

Spelling Bee stories? Noooooo! Damn you, submitter, why must you remind me of traumatic memories?

2005-06-01 07:57:03 PM
Can't we stop calling them 'losers' and call them 'the kids who didn't win'?

We are now creating a brand new color at which kids will now panic when they see: purple is the new red. Switching colors for errors doesn't make a lot of sense.

That has to be one of the most idiotic statements I've ever seen on Fark...and that's saying allot...

Congratulations!

I love a good spelling bee. But even better are the scrabble competitions.

Diabolic

I'll see your dimethyltriptamine and raise you some dextromethorphan hydrobromide. 8)

Which is why I said it. This is actually happening in the US, but no doubt it's happening elsewhere as well. link to story

Diabolic and Dafodude

Neither of those words are actually hard to spell... they're just long. Antidisestablishmentarianism is easy to spell because you can sound it out. Same thing with dimethyltryptamine.

Now fuchsia... that's a tough one. And what about a few years ago when they asked the kid to spell the letter "h"? Who knew it was aitch? Aitch sounds like something you'd get from a hooker.

2005-06-01 08:09:28 PM
Excellent headline, submittar...submiter...submittor.

Dan Quayle and his potatoes surrender!

Props to submitter.

it says in the article that every participant gets $50. try reading the article.

and yeah, other spelling bees aren't quite like that, with everyone getting something, but we're not talking about all spelling bees...just this one.

I'll see your dextromethorphan hydrobromide and raise you some Tetrahydronapthalene.

M-O-O-N, that spells Tetrahydronapthalene.

Fabian and Dancin_In_Anson obviously aren't qualified to even compete.

2005-06-01 08:17:56 PM
Those kids, they think they brain so big.

2005-06-01 08:18:31 PM

You just created 49 losers who are going to go home and cry. Way to encourage them to learn.

You just gave 49 students, who had enough interest to enter the competition in the first place, a reason to go home and study harder.

Coronation, submitter? ....This is bad comedy.

2005-06-01 08:28:38 PM
A sentence using every word I misspelled in the spelling bee:

The report showed that the faulse pretences among the people of the villiage were decieving.

/Dork
//Still remembers those damn words
///Is it just me or has this been the best week ever for headlines?

2005-06-01 08:28:55 PM
The problem with spelling bees is the difficulty of the words changes for each kid, always pissed me the hell off that I would get the hard ones.

Kids should all be given the same words and write down the spelling.

2005-06-01 08:29:29 PM
"If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball." Funniest movie line in ages. PC sucks.

Ya gotta love when the little bastards use shiat like "please use it in a sintance" or "defintison please" to stall.

Hardly a stall tactic. Knowing the roots and origins of word helps a lot in figuring out how a word is spelt even if you've never heard of it before and especially if there are silent letters. Same deal with the analogy section in the SAT, having even a little knowledge of latin helped me answer more than one question when I never heard of the words before until then.

2005-06-01 08:37:11 PM
A few words from round four:

scaberulous, tonitruous, diphthongize, obmutescence, suffrutescent, lederhosen (Check 'em all out...)

The only one I come remotely close to understanding is lederhosen. The rest just make me feel dumb.

Ye gads... thanks for the audio reminder of that orgasmic "Beckster" chick...

Rebecca: E.... U.... OOOHHHHHHHHHHHH.... N... Y, M ... EUONYM (ohmyi'mclimaxingrightnowooooohhhhhi!!!!)

Proctor, sounding slightly pissed: That's correct...

Farking loser.

So no, not obscure.
