Just what type of images are we going to be seeing up there?

Seems you all need to got to BK, get a Double Bacon Burger, and chill out with your minature Vader toy. I think it would help give you perspective.

What's your point?

Mine was that editing someone elses work and charging people to see it is wrong. Moran, indeed.

And to what cave are you referring? And how were you involved in that particular discussion?

(and for you younglings, they used to show Oz once a year and it was a Big Deal cuz if you didn't watch it on TV you had to wait till the next year, since we only had four channels to pick from and NO VCR/DVD/DVR/Whatever)

That was the only time I was allowed to stay up past my bedtime on a school night. :)

I saw that movie...there is NO WAY that is appropriate for a 5 year old..The kid probably hasn't slept a wink since...

making an edited version would make everyone happy

Like the version they'll eventually show on airplanes? Kinda Readers Digest with just the major plot points.

(do they do that anymore? Been a long time)

SPOILERS

Scene 1: Anakin saves somebody by breaking the rules

Scene 2: Anakin hugs Padme, says "I love you" but has his fingers crossed behind his back

Scene 3: Padme surprises Anakin on Jerry Springer with "These are not the droids you are looking for, and oh by the way, Obi-Wan is the father of the younglings, but I really like Mace -- he's Hott, and has a big purple Saber!"

Scene 4: "NOOOOOOOooooo!"

Scene 5: 'Operators are standing by for your order. Please have credit card ready. Limited Time Only: With the purchase of a purple Buick LightSaber, we'll send you green oven mitts that try and convince you to be patient, dinner isn't ready yet!'

They could make the whole dang thing last about as long as Weird Al's song about Ep I.

But who decides what to take out? A lot of the violence shows the depth of Anakin's descent into evil. Even the implied slaughter of the young 'uns. And besides, that was only implied, and not graphic. Even the crispy Vader scene wasn't terribly graphic, but could be somewhat unsettling.

The editing might make some people happy, but at what expense? Artistic and intellectual integrity are more important than some 8 year old not being able to handle a 5-minute scene and covering his eyes.

Wrong for who? The only people that would watch an edited/tamer version would be kids and their parents. Everyone else would still be able to see the regular version. The original piece would remain intact.

The kids will never know what pieces of art violence they are missing...

2005-05-24 04:20:21 PM
Cyber_Junk On the whole, the violence is more graphic than EP I or EP II.

I don't deny there is more in ROTS but it is still on the same level as the other movies.

Beheading Jango Fett is OK since he had a helmet on but we cut away when it's *deleted due to spoiler* ?

Anakin becoming a crispy critter
Agreed, this is the only scene that takes a step above the other movies

The massacre of helpless kids
Not much different than the slaughter of Women and Children Sand People. But, hey, they didn't LOOK human so it's OK

Ridiculous windbags like this were their to trample my fun when I was a child, too. I remember my strange, paedophile-like grey-hushpuppy-wearing neighbours and how they'd be twitching at the net curtains every time my front door opened and I trundled off to play and how they'd moan at every opportunity they got. They weren't trying to take on Burger King but it's the same profile: retired, white-haired gimps with way too much time on their hands and nothing else to do but poke their unwanted noses into other peoples' businesses. Usually, their own kids and grandkids don't even want to know them which, of course, results in bitterness and revenge for every grandchild of everyone else in the country. I've got to squeeze politics into this somehow: in my experience in the UK, they're usually liberal democrats. Conservatives tend to have more of a live-and-let-live, boys will be boys attitude.

2005-05-24 04:25:26 PM
On a different note, I predict that this movie is going to break a billion in sales and go on to be the "biggest grossing movie of all time".

Aside from the artistic and intellectual integrity of the piece being ruined, as I have stated earlier, this opens up a huge can of worms financially. Lawsuitarity will ensue because the producers, writers, and directors will demand restitution for their work being altered by those who have no right to do so. I'd rather there be fewer lawsuits, not more, and that people either experience a piece as it was intended or not experience it at all, and either way not biatch about it.

MadAfro: It was "Watership Down" for me.

Watership Down messed me up for life (and the only movie to have done so, saw it when I was about 6-8). I had nightmares of bunnies caught in barbed wire for years.

Of course, none of the flaming contributors (nor the asker who started the whole mess) responded to the elephant in the room or my comment. People are more interested in hearing themselves argue, and to belittle others.

PG means 'Parental Guidance', not guidance by the Dove Foundation.

If he were here, Jesus would have certainly stopped worrying about war, hunger, and disease to make sure no ten year olds saw a star wars movie.

The burger king toys are for STAR WARS, not just ROTS. It is timed to go along with the movie because that is common sense. Every time I eat at BK, I see at least a dozen older folks (upper teens and adults) asking for the toys...and in fact I think just as many adult star wars collector types will be going for these as kids.

Also, no parent has the right to judge what is appropriate for another parent's child. You know your child, not your neighbors'. If your kid can't handle Anakin becoming a quadrapalegic...then don't let him see it(of course he'll just watch an evil downloaded interweb version at a friend's house anyway). If your neighbor's think their kid(s) can handle the movie then it's their perrogative. I'm certain we'll see a news story about some big brother slicing off his little sis' arms and legs, then lighting her on fire very soon. Really.

I believe Batman Begins is PG 13 and there are a LOT of toys for it out already...and I guarantee you we'll see Batmobiles in happy meals once the star wars furor dies down. Shall we campaign against that too? Wouldn't want the little ones to see a grown man in a rubber suit fighting a grown man dressed like a scarecrow!

I don't see these people protesting CNN's footage of the slaughtered Iraqi women and children our country HEROICALLY defeated, however. Odd thing, that.

It's not the people willing to let their children see the movie who are bad parents....it is the group who think they can parent the entire world via their own beliefs.

F42 -

She needs a visit from the What Not to Wear folks. And apparently Anakin needs a call from Supernanny. ("no, no, no, you don't just kill them, you send them to the naughty spot")

No, reality TV hasn't altered my perception of things, why do you ask?

Susan Linn, a Harvard psychologist and author of "Consuming Kids: The Hostile Takeover of Childhood."

The hostile...what...?

Why is the bar mitzvah at age 13 again? Oh, right, it's because adolescence is a fixed length of development, not a percentage of lifespan. Just because we're living twice as long does not mean we're children twice as long. This American coddling of our grubs needs to stop or they'll never develop into healthy insects.

Why not? Someone has different morals and ethics and this causes you to have personal issues?
It makes you seem like you're not terribly secure in your own.

Wow, this completely blows my mind.

Just . . . wow. Let the kids keep the toys. Hell, take them to see Star Wars. Good flick. Appropriate for most children (because most children can control themselves and won't go out, buy a lightsaber, and cut up their friends.)

What blows my mind even more was this turned into a liberal/conservative debate. Good ol' Fark.

/not conservative

There's only one thing I'm keeping my child away from until he's a teenager is the Bible. I don't want his ability to discern reality from fantasy to be buggered up.

I actually think this is a huge relief. I am so glad that all other problems have been discussed intelligently and solved like World hunger, political corruption, global warming, Cures for cancer, aids, heart disease, affordable housing, prison overcrowding, religious fanaticism, obesity, access to education, Pollution, dwindling oil supplies, biased media, illiteracy, addictions, American Idol obsession, stem cell research, ..........

2005-05-24 06:47:14 PM
Perhaps this has already been touched on, but I think that it warrants repetition:

Last time I checked, Burger King was a privately owned and operated business. They do not have to answer to the public when it comes to things like this - they simply are not required to. If their business practices apppall you so much, EAT SOMEWHERE ELSE.

Fark these whiners and the whiners here who agree with them.

Since when is the farking mpaa rating the universal law? So what if the rating says PG13, it's up to each individual parent to decide if their kids can watch the movie. I don't see anything in ROTS that isn't appropriate for kids. Even the scene where Anakin kills the kids is hilarious.

My parents took me to see lots of awesome movies as a kid - Predator, Scarface, Nightmare On Elm Street, Friday The 13th, Terminator, Alein, Aliens, etc. I feel sorry for the pussified kids these days who can't see some nice T&A or someone getting their head chopped off.

2005-05-24 07:14:32 PM
mykie:
If I recall correctly, not all Star Wars movies were rated PG-13.

You would be incorrect. ROTS is the only one. In fact, to keep the Ep. 4 from getting a G rating, Lucas wound up adding the burned bodies of Owen & Beru Lars.

RodeoFrog

"Here's what's wrong with the argument: Every toy aisle in America has countless guns, knives, tanks, motorcycles, hand grenades, Barbies, ovens, and elephants. Many toys are sold to children without question of the message sent."

And what exactly is wrong with motorcycles RodeoFrog? You got a problem with Ovens, Elephants, and Barbie too? Man, I guess you think kids shouldn't go to the zoo, they might see an Elephant.. and they should be able to live in an Oven-Free house too right?

Hahahahaha.

BULLSHIAT!!! It's fiction for Christ's sake. You see much worse on Farking cable TV. I saw it today and think it's a hell of a good story. I took my kids to the first ones when they premiered almost 30 years ago, and their not preverted killing machines. Get a farking life...
