(Some Guy) The FCC fined CBS millions for inadverdently showing Janet J's boobie. Yesterday, several stations broadcast a man shot to death by the police, live. How much will the FCC fine that station? Submitter predicts $0. What say you? (tinyurl.com) divider line 510

Here's a radical thought: TURN OFF THE TV.

It's mostly crap on there anyway and the good shows are available on DVD and BT...

At least they used to be until the MPAA shut down all of the good sites I knew of yesterday.

Anyone got any reccomendations of good sites?
Hook a brutha up?

Without it there would be no super bowl. Hope you were being sarcastic. That's what football is.

Wow they really shot the fark out of that guy.

2005-05-13 04:04:13 PM
1. The cops seem to be shooting the guy in the back, which I am assuming is in violation of some firearm protocol in LA.

2. The guy had a gun, but wasn't pointing it at the cops, probaly another violation of firearm protocol.

3. If the dude was of a darker skin tone there would be some rioting and minor looting, cause LA is just a shiathole anyways.

4. Why the hell do you think news helicopters follow these chases the head of the news department WANTS it to end violently. DUH!!!!

5. I am supprised that one of the cops didn't give the now dead suspect a good nightstick in the chops for making him chase him.

6. Did I mention LA sucks?

Mr.Man

i wouldn't be very pleased if my 9yr daughter saw Janet during halftime.

Why? Honestly? your 9 years old daughter has never seen a boob before?

I am unaware of a single unscripted live event resulting in an FCC fine. For example, I've seen the F-bomb dropped in several circumstances, such as in the background of a televised boxing match (back when they did those on TV) or in the tape recording of a downed pilot on Nightline shortly after the Gulf War, and neither, to my knowledge, resulted in fines.

Submitter=Troll.

2005-05-13 04:05:57 PM
Doesn't making a stink about this seem like a bad idea to anyone else? I'd rather keep our violence while the FCC attacks the sex than have the FCC censure both.

Mark my words. The truth will come out that this poor white epileptic deaf-mute cabana boy was unaware of what was going on as the stobe lights sent him into seizures. Whe he tried to gather what motor skills he was still able to command, he ran away. As most people can tell from the video, his pencil/donation can was shot out of his hands and as he tried to reach for his little card that explains his speaking impediment, the ruthless, handicap hating jack-booted gestapo squad took his life in a hail of bullets to the back!
It'll read just like that!

Its called time delay. Raido has been doing it for years. What the fark is wrong with TV stations getting up on technology? Its to the point that the dump button is a cliche in most radio shows, and yet TV is stuck like a dinosaur.

My guess is that they believe the gov't will eventually buy it for them.

flamingboard:

in one of the articles they claimed that there was no way to know that is was going to end in a shooting so they are not responsible for showing it.

This is exactly why it is so unbelievably irresponsible for the tv station to have shown it live -- they don't know how it's going to end. They could have prevented the shooting from being aired by showing it with a 30-second delay. Readily available technology, they just didn't bother to use it and instead aired an incredibly unpredictable and dangerous situation live. They should be fined so hard they walk funny after.

I watched that chase live...the scary part was not him getting shot (in fact, there was no "official" confirmation that he had been...other than the guy just lying there for a few minutes).

No, the scary part was watching him risk the lives of those around him. For example, the heavy set older guy with a cane that pulled a young girl out of the cars path, with both of them falling to the ground. Or maybe when he was driving 70 miles an hour, often in the oncoming lanes, and through red lights during L.A. rush hour. Or maybe when he was doing the same speed down residential streets?

Hmmm...maybe it was when he jumped out of the wrecked car and attempted to get into a busy diner with a gun in his hand?

Sorry...got on a rant...anyway, my point was that if you were watching the events unfold, there was no confirmation of his condition...they didn't confirm that he'd been killed until later in the day. So you couldn't say "hey, I just watched a guy die on live TV".

Frankly, I didn't care what happened to him. I was just relieved that the chase didn't result in an innocent person being killed.

So, the news should be fined for showing the news? In order to prove a point or something?

The only outcome I want to see from this is the FCC being disbanded and a mob of citizens storming the building with pitchforks and torches.

Obscenity rules govern only crapping, swearing, and nudity. It also only covers broadcast TV, and I only saw the shooting on cable channels.

Regardless, the shooting doesn't fall into any of those categories. You're free to file a complaint though, and maybe they'll change the rules to include such things.

I suspect the submittor would rather have a free for all than restrict police chases. I may be wrong though.

You see the geezer throw the gun on the floor!! He was unarmed when they shot him! and then he goes to reach into his pocket - probably for a hanky to wipe up the blood or a white flag - and they shoot him some more!!! And then when he's lying on the floor they shoot him a little bit more!!

Maybe I'm just an evil person, but I'd rather see police load tons of shots in a guy that pulled a gun on them and was fleeing instead of that person shooting my family or driving them off of the road. You call that rubbish, I call it the price a person pays for pulling guns on cops. Maybe he was pulling out a hanky...or a gun... If it were the latter and they didn't shoot, then I'd be pretty pissed off that the guy was able to harm more people when he could've been instantly stopped. We aren't talking about police shooting some random person with his hands in his pocket. And if you saw him THROW the gun, then we were watching a different chase.

What we clearly need is people like you who know when someone is unarmed. If the police had such intuition, we would be much safer.

/realizes there are some asshat cops

CBS didn't "inadvertently" show a boobie. It deliberately showed Janet Jackson's yecchy, sagging boobie at a time when over half the audience was guaranteed to have their mouths stuffed with beer and hotwings. Beer and hotwings which would all go to waste, thanks to a nationwide spit-take.

As it says in the Good Book (right where I pencilled it in in the margins): Thou shalt never make another spit beer and hotwings in vain, so I say it's only fair that CBS had to pay up. Would have been solidly kicked in the happysacks too, if I'd had a say in the ruling.

As for showing people get shot to death on the news, hey, stop handing out awards and ratings to CSI and its dozens of ultragory spinoffs, and then you can act all outraged and pissy about violence and blood on TV. Until then, you don't have much of an argument. And start broadcasting better breasts, you stupid network boobs. It isn't that we don't want to see them. We just don't want to see Janet's, fer crying out loud. Betcha you wouldn't have gotten sued for flashing Beyonce's.

RTFA, didn't R[all of]TFT, so these may be repeated sentiments...

1. This wasn't nationally televised primetime.
2. I don't think CBS should have been fined either.
3. Moral of the story: One less scumbag on the streets. Now maybe someone will think twice about stealing cars or comitting home-invasion robberies. Rejoice.

For all of you biatching about biatching about breasts on TV.

This was shown on primetime national television. No, breasts weren't used to sell anything. No, they weren't used to excite sexually. No, they weren't used to depict the violation of a woman.

There were no fines involved as far as I know.

most live car chases are stupid. except one about 2 years ago in cali that lasted about 2 hours before the dumbass drove onto a runaway truck ramp. i laughed my ass off when he hit the gravel and half the car was swallowed up.

/for the uninformed
//runaway truck ramps are long, gravel filled pits meant to stop semi's on steep roadways that can't slow down by just braking
