(Some Guy)   The FCC fined CBS millions for inadverdently showing Janet J's boobie. Yesterday, several stations broadcast a man shot to death by the police, live. How much will the FCC fine that station? Submitter predicts $0. What say you?   (tinyurl.com) divider line 509

Why does the FCC think a boobie is worse than death?

2005-05-13 02:47:24 PM
Because Americans have screwy morals and think the human body is dirty and unclean.

Thanks, religion!

I dunno, seeing a bad guy get it in the end isn't so far off of what we've been watching on TV for decades.

Besides, flappy titties should be banned from all forms of media.

If the suspect had been female and her shirt ripped off and her boobs exposed, there wouldn't be a fine either. Its not that a boob was exposed, it was that the Super Bowl was supposed to be a planned event and there were people to actually hold accountable for the incident.

I think the fact that people are regularly killed on tv is the problem in question, not the cause.

I say: who gives a damn?

2005-05-13 02:55:24 PM
Yup, the fine will be $0.00.

Fortunately, my local nbc station stopped the tape before he was shot.

These televised chases are stupid.

2005-05-13 03:01:52 PM
Because nipples are far more deadly that a hail of gunfire

They couldn't do that here. S. Cal saw it live.

Anyone got a torrent of this?

2005-05-13 03:06:54 PM
Seeing that crime doesn't pay is just good tv.

2005-05-13 03:11:51 PM

I think the fact that people are regularly killed on tv is the problem in question, not the cause.

People are unjustly murdered to create a conflict and then the bad guys are brought to justice to resolve said conflict in most cases. Perhaps you hadn't noticed.

You have to have bad guys for the audience to despise before the hero can make it all better by catching them. If said bad guys get offed in the process, so much the better.

We need villains to make the good guys look....well...good. If there were no wrongs, there would be nothing to make right and we'd have very boring TV. Kinda like reality TV is now.

The "What Say You" part of the headline reminded me of League Of Gentlemen.

"What know you sir, of Eight Man Down?"

When boobies are outlawed, only outlaws will have boobies.

Killing someone is not sexually obscene

2005-05-13 03:33:40 PM
A two dollar bill.

2005-05-13 03:33:43 PM
I think the fine should be 0$ for the news. If the police shoot a citizen to death, that is news.

Of course, I also think the fine should be 0$ for Janet's boob.

So what you're saying is that we need hideously ugly boobies to make the nice boobies look...well....yummy?

2005-05-13 03:34:01 PM
Christianity has absolutely no problems with violence, and christian = family, so therefore, violence is family-friendly. Easy.

2005-05-13 03:34:08 PM
If it was a family show on at prime time and they showed an actual dead guy without warning, I'd bet they'd be fined.

2005-05-13 03:34:16 PM
If it had been a white girl's tit it would have been acceptable.

2005-05-13 03:34:47 PM
personally i believe stations should be fined for not showing boobies

2005-05-13 03:34:54 PM
Because in our ever-emerging theocracy, we allow people to die, and seeing a boobie is not for you!

2005-05-13 03:35:01 PM
i don't think there's anything technically illegal about seeing someone shot to death, boobies on the other hand....

2005-05-13 03:35:18 PM
gotta see the dude die, Must Have Link

2005-05-13 03:35:40 PM
i say we need more chases and more people being shot and killed on teevee.

I get great satisfaction out of watching COPS. It has to be best television show ever put on. I just wish more people got shot or beaten.

who cares about boobs when you can have blood!

/snicker

2005-05-13 03:35:59 PM
People getting shot is a common sight on non-premium televison, real or fake.

Are exposed boobies? Nope, and thus no fine.

2005-05-13 03:36:01 PM
This is retarded

I saw instructions on German television on how to do Kama Sutra positions with two people naked.

Just for the record, violence isn't "indecent". Just thought I would clear that up before any flaemwar broke out. (Although there is an NOI out on violence and I think the Rockefeller bill before the House includes fines for violent content.)

2005-05-13 03:36:57 PM
Jackson should be fined. Period.

2005-05-13 03:37:18 PM
This thread is useless without video.

2005-05-13 03:37:35 PM
Its not that a boob was exposed, it was that the Super Bowl was supposed to be a planned event and there were people to actually hold accountable for the incident.

That would make sense if the FCC was required to show that CBS knew that the boob would be exposed. There's never been any indication that CBS did know, but that's irrelevant because it doesn't matter to the FCC. All that matters is what is broadcast, not the context or the motives behind it. In this case it doesn't matter that they couldn't forsee the results of the chase, they broadcast the shooting and therefore could be fined by the FCC.

Both situations could be avoided with a delay, which I'm certain we'll see more of in the future.

2005-05-13 03:37:36 PM
"Obviously, no one knew shots were going to be fired," William Burton, a station spokesman, told the Los Angeles Times.

"We were hoping he'd just crash into a brick wall, y'know, or run down some pedestrians. We had no idea that it might turn VIOLENT."

Asshat.

2005-05-13 03:37:55 PM
Hmmm...you can show someone getting killed but you can't show a boobie. Sounds just like Saudi Arabia.

Best part of the video being the reporter screaming:

"Pull out! Pull out, Mike!"

Sounds kinda...well...it is California after all.

There's no sex in our violence.
//Rather see a nasty boob than a gun-down

2005-05-13 03:38:24 PM
But if children see a woman's breast, it will forever scar them! I mean, what next, are we going to place naked breasts inside the mouths of infant babies?!?! Won't anybody think of the children? Would you let your child see a woman's breast?

2005-05-13 03:38:26 PM
For what ever farking reason, Europe is complete prudes about violence, and America is complete prudes about sex. I don't know why the fark it is, it just is. Either try and change it or try and live with it, don't biatch.

2005-05-13 03:38:30 PM
Punishment? I bet the people responsible for showing it live are getting promotions.
Was't there a saying like "Democrats hate violence, Republicans hate sex"?

The FCC doesn't really have a say. They're the PTC's biatch.

2005-05-13 03:39:52 PM
I'd just like to state for the record that I love COPS. I like it especially when the camera man out runs the cop, cracks the perp upside the head with the camera and then waits for the cop, who is huffing and puffing, to catch up.
