The tax stuff that arrived here was out of date, it had his info from his first stay with Ukiah, this is his second, and I know he didn't go back to the old apartment or address.

By straight, I mean straight. He's not homophobic, but he is pretty certain where his interests lie, and has never mentioned to me that he might be interested in anything different. Of course, I could be wrong, but even if I am, that's okay with me. The important thing is that I find him. There was a TF thread just yesterday about the tricks debt collectors will use, including calling up your neighbors to have them deliver "pay up" messages to you. And I know several people on Fark (myself included), who have cracked-out relatives that they do not want contact with, where the relatives go behind their backs to try to establish contact.

A few years ago I received a message from an unknown email addy that had a spam subject heading (selling flowers or something), with a regular email in the message body; it turned out to be one of my relatives using spam to email me, since I had her emails on ignore (she'd been on ignore by the rest of the family for a while before that).

I recently had a farker's parent contact me, from finding my email on their friends list; this parent was on /ignore by the rest of their family, too. The parent did not know anything about me except that I was listed as a friend, and wanted to talk to me, since the farker (who is alive, employed, healthy, not in any danger) won't talk to them anymore. The parent has a history of mental illness. That's why I've removed or masked some of the contact details in my various online profiles, BTW.

About 30 years ago my dad moved from Kentucky to the U.K., not least to get away from his overbearing mother, and for a year or so he didn't have a phone... his mother managed to sweet-talk an operator into finding a neighbor in Wales (a couple of miles from my dad's mailing address), whom he'd never met before, to trudge over and tell my dad that his mother wanted to hear from him. He was in his late 20s. She didn't have any emergency. She just was frustrated that he wasn't talking to her much.

I'm not a big blind-faith kinda guy, but this thread is an occasion where I do trust the admins to exercise good judgment about greenlighting, so I'm willing to assume it's safe. I don't think the guy who asked "how do we know it's legit" was trying to shiat on people for doing a good deed, though; his question was entirely reasonable.
