Holy Christ. I'm starting to think China is doing some funny little genetic tinkering. Undoubtedly part of some Red plot to undermine our freedom.

I'll willing to bet they sewed a little guy onto another little guy's shoulders, Wong-on-Dong style.

Tribe Called Quest is unimpressed. Q-Tip left his wallet with him.

He cannot be any good if China let him walk away without a fuss.

Big motherf*cker, long arms, can dunk without taking a foot off the ground.

But no proven skills.

In other words, Manute Bol vol. 2.

two words: Shawn Badley

Sun Ming Ming? Should we call him Sun Ming²? He's like Yao Ming, but Mingier.

The only problem is 2 hours after you see him play, you're ready to watch another game.

He must have an enormous swanstucker.

I hope nobody wheels out the tiresome old joke about "cream of sum young guy".

Only a compl33t l4m3r would do that.

There's lots of really tall Chinese people in China, once you get up north of the Yangtze and closer towards Mongolia. The Chinese could put together a basketball team of all 7 footers, easily. And Sun, given his place of origin and size, Yao Ming just about the same height but much more slightly built, is almost certainly part Mongolian.

Could he be a good player? Probaly, thing is for someone to give him a shot and be patient enough to let him develop.

I for one welcome our new giant Chinese masters.

Just don't offer him a Coke!

it would be real interesting if the rockets picked him up, then we would have both chinese giants.

2005-05-11 06:47:08 AM
Anyone notice a little detail in the article? Namely that his growth plates haven't closed up yet? That's just farkin scary, guy is 7'8" and still growing.

"hopeful second rounder" != "high draft pick"

So is this like G.I. Joe's where they decided to go back to the normal size after years of midgety ones?

vossiewulf Since he's a freakishly large Chinese guy he's probably got a normal sized swanstucker.

Finally someone tall enough to see over that bloody wall, think of all the frisbees and tennis balls they'll be able to get back.

Just because he's tall doesn't mean he'll be a good basketball player. Look at Yao Ming, Houston expected him to be the second coming of Akeem Olajuwon...and he's an okay player, but no superstar.

All it takes is one knee injury. And you can count on the thugs in the American professional leagues to give him one.

2005-05-11 07:44:22 AM
They better do a physical on this guy and make sure it's not actually two grown Chinese men, one standing on the other's shoulders.

/panda dunk

2005-05-11 07:50:17 AM
No growth plate closure = no estrogen.

You could simulate his growth in a teenager by giving a estrogen blocker combined with growth hormone shots.

Man, can you imagine the poor little chinese girl who tries to take on this guy?

how's that yao thing workin out for ya houston?

medically:
looking at his chin, nose, and ear structure, he looks a little acromegalic... i hope that's been cleared up, it's not a benign condition!

basketbally:
If he's like Shawn Bradley without the skill or conditioning, ouch!

Are you kidding me? Yao is getting better every year. He's the only center that can contain Shaq.

Yao is a great player.. you're off your rocker.

2005-05-11 08:29:22 AM
Yao's FG% has gone up, but his rebounds are down, his assists are down, and his FT% are down. It's not clear that he's getting better every year. Yao is pretty good, not great. And Sun Ming Ming is, as someone noted, perhaps a second rounder. In the NBA, a second round pick is a borderline NBA player.

WTF, yao sucks, he is the softest center ive ever seen, he gets dunked on almost every game. And what happened to them in these playoff's??? oh yeah, they are already out. yao sucks plain and simple

Ok America, here is my take.

This guy has upside potential that is off the charts... but I don't think he can be a player in the NBA. Just because you have size doesn't make you a star. I've never liked Shaq as a person (too dumb, too full of himself, and is always getting help from the refs/league) but he is a very agile and strong player. This guy aside from his size doesn't seem to bring too much else. When a scout is commenting on the shooter's touch for a guy who can only be projected as a center, then there might be problems. If we're making comparisons to Chinese players (a la Yao Ming) then this guy is probably going to be very soft, and therefore unable to use his size effectively. If I were a team, I'd save the money and try drafting a college player for once.

/knows the NBA is fixed... do you?

After the initial misunderstanding, the Liliputions let him go to follow his NBA dreams....

I'd like for you to cite some examples where NBA players have deliberately injured opposing team members.

'Cause I can't think of any.

You don't know but two things right now; Jack and Sh*t. And Jack t left town.

2005-05-11 08:55:21 AM
Doesn't matter if he's good, China's more than willing to let any incredibly tall players out of the country who can bring them attention. "Wow, the Chinese are so tall!"

(They're actually not that short on average, people shouldn't confuse them with the Japanese.)

Man, can you imagine the poor little chinese girl who tries to take on this guy?

The factors that make you grow tall and/or large don't really have a major impact on the size of the dong. At his extreme size it may not matter as much, but it holds true for most everyone else including NBA players in the mid-to-high six foot range.

2005-05-11 09:12:20 AM
Manute Bol and Shawn Bradley actually had some skills. Manute Bol was a blocking legend and Bradley has been around for over a decade now.

Yes, but does he know Shaq-Fu?

I bet the Chinese gov't is deliberately manipulating genes to make a taller Chinese! I'm sure they have the tech, I KNOW they have the gall, and they most certainly have the desire to impress the world.

What's with the quote about him being 'possibly' the tallest person on earth because Guinness only recognizes a 7'8" person as the tallest right now? How about the enormous Ukrainian guy that is something like 8'6"?

USA Today article

I always kinda thought that Guinness kept up better than that.

Now we know why Godzilla attacks Japan. Those huge @55ed chinamen would whoop his scaly behind.

Wonder if he can play? Even if he can't, he will be a biatch to move.

SlickBomb...

Don't know for sure that the NBA's fixed, but the most compelling argument in the case AGAINST it being fixed would be the fact that LeBron and the North Coasters did not make the playoffs again...

If it was fixed he would have been playing Shaq and the Heat in the first round...you tellin me that's not a TV and NBA exec dream playoff matchup?

2005-05-11 10:21:06 AM
The NBA is not fixed, it's scripted.

2005-05-11 10:42:13 AM
360? that's kind of skinny for someone that tall. He's gonna get knocked around something fierce.

2005-05-11 10:44:16 AM
What are the odds of an 8 foot guy from China?

About 1 in 4 billion.

2005-05-11 10:52:04 AM
the fact that china has all these tall guys probably has more to do with the immense size of their population than anything else. makes total sense, when you're a billion strong you're going to have more 7 footers than any other population.

Yao's rebounds have gone down because Mutombo comes in to relieve him when the Rockets need to play more defensively. Mutumbo does the rebounding for the Rockets. Yao's game has gotten much better. It took Hakeem a long time to get the Dream Shake consitant enough to make him MVP quality. His first years where just like Yao's.

Yao just need to learn to be more aggressive and keep his eye on passes from T-Mac.

By two years, Yao will be wearing a championship ring along with all the Rockets as long as the team keeps playing like they did.
