On the plus side, the people in Texas are much better off than they would be had they stayed in Mexico.

Proctor: All right, here's your last question. What was the cause of the Civil War?

Apu: Actually, there were numerous causes. Aside from the obvious schism between the abolitionists and the anti-abolitionists, there were economic factors, both domestic and inter--

Proctor: Wait, wait... just say slavery.

Apu: Slavery it is, sir.

Honig the Apothecary: A little fact checking could have done wonders for that 50 second piece of tripe.

Perhaps, but the controversy that now exists is probably a force for that, no? It may have been "140 degrees off" but that still yields 40 degress that the more commonly known version of things omit.

2005-05-10 01:32:04 PM
"Better" force for.... After all, with only fifty seconds to say something, they could either water it down the way it has always been, go for the controversial 140 degree spin, or hire that guy who talks really fast so they can get the whole truth crammed in before the next commercial.

when refering to slave owners, you're mostly talking about people of english ancestory, if you're german or irish, most likely your ancestors came over after this crap was done with and through.(but not definetly)

2005-05-10 03:51:40 PM
Imagine what would happen if Nickelodeon said something like that against blacks.

For example "The cause of slavery was that the black tribal leaders in Africa made money selling their prisoners into slavery to the white traders."

But, once again, if is ok because it is casting whites in America in a negative light...

2005-05-10 03:52:27 PM

Aint right

2005-05-10 03:52:49 PM
Ridiculous. The Alamo was fought because Billy Bob Thornton needed money for a recent divorce settlement. I saw it on Fox News.

2005-05-10 03:53:24 PM
So I assume the Texans are taking this well?

ArcadianRefugee

the guy from nick say there were several key issues and slavery was one of them.

farker says he must have failed american history.

you ask how so and then say that it was an issue, but it probably wasn't a main issue.

huh?

i'm focusing on the word key

"On the plus side, the people in Texas are much better off than they would be had they stayed in Mexico."

I don't see why the REST of us have to suffer for that.

The battle of the Alamo was fought on Deep Space Nine, lead by Chief Miles O'Brian and Doctor Julian Bashier on their off time when they weren't fighting in any of the battles durring the Dominion War.

There, that is the truth!

2005-05-10 03:56:03 PM
I'm trying to find out why this warranted the 'Stupid' tag, submitter.

Is it the Texans protesting it who are stupid, or the fact that Nickelodeon put it on TV in the first place?

/history major
//loves Nickelodeon
///not a huge fan of Texas

2005-05-10 03:57:28 PM
Being from Texas, I do know one thing, don't piss Texans off. All they want is a reason to take over. Don't give it to them just yet.

2005-05-10 03:57:33 PM
Maybe Ozzy should pay the Alamo a "little visit" again ...

/just sayin'

2005-05-10 03:58:18 PM
Stupid Nickelodeon. Everyone knows Karl Rove tricked the Mexicans into attacking so we could steal their oil.

2005-05-10 03:58:36 PM
Battle of the Alamo The American Civil War was fought so white farmers could keep their slaves

There, that's better. (and the South would have slaves again in a jiffy, if it was legal)

But later on, United America enlisted cheaper Mexican labor anyway.

...Texas...

2005-05-10 04:01:02 PM
and every soldier in the union army during the war of northern oppression woke up each morning singing 'the battle hymn of the republic' and then went off on a god driven mission to free the black man because all men were created equal and they would rather die than allow one more black man to spend one more day subject to slavery!

...or, possibly, just as those who fought and died at the alamo, each man had his own personal reason for why he fought and it was only aftr the fact that historians decided they knew what each man was actually thinking.

i can't wait until 160 years from now when some historian decides all of us actually went to work today because we were all working to support our government in its quest for truth, justice and the american way! (for the record, the real reason i went to work today was to finish up a project and because i want a paycheck on friday).

2005-05-10 04:01:10 PM
The Alamo was actually fought over beer - loser had to drink Pearl. When they saw that they could not prevail, the brave defenders rightly chose death.

I'm a white Texan and I have no problem admitting that there was some aspects to the rebellion against Mexico that are not morally acceptable today.

Anybody who thinks they're ancestors were all angels, just step right up and let's take a look at them.

2005-05-10 04:04:13 PM
...and it's true....so why not have a "hero" tag on this one?

/or at least an interesting tag

I wish I had the lyrics of the Davey Crockett song from MAD TV where he is talkngi about chasing Davey around and kissin him under a tree while the manly fires burn hot at the Alamo

or something like that.

No, most likely, your ancestors were taken and put in a uniform as soon as they stepped off the boat.

A lot of immigrants were forced to fight in that war. It doesn't make the history books too often that Lincoln enslaved immigrants to fight a war to keep the country together... not to abolish slavery.

2005-05-10 04:07:38 PM
Ah yes, the ole "The Civil War wasn't about slavery" spiel.

The constitution, it is true, secured every essential guarantee to the institution while it should last, and hence no argument can be justly urged against the constitutional guarantees thus secured, because of the common sentiment of the day. Those ideas, however, were fundamentally wrong. They rested upon the assumption of the equality of races. This was an error. It was a sandy foundation, and the government built upon it fell when the "storm came and the wind blew."

Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner- stone rests upon the great truth, that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery -- subordination to the superior race -- is his natural and normal condition. [Applause.] This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth. This truth has been slow in the process of its development, like all other truths in the various departments of science. It has been so even amongst us. Many who hear me, perhaps, can recollect well, that this truth was not generally admitted, even within their day. The errors of the past generation still clung to many as late as twenty years ago. Those at the North, who still cling to these errors, with a zeal above knowledge, we justly denominate fanatics. All fanaticism springs from an aberration of the mind -- from a defect in reasoning. It is a species of insanity. One of the most striking characteristics of insanity, in many instances, is forming correct conclusions from fancied or erroneous premises; so with the anti-slavery fanatics; their conclusions are right if their premises were. They assume that the negro is equal, and hence conclude that he is entitled to equal privileges and rights with the white man. If their premises were correct, their conclusions would be logical and just -- but their premise being wrong, their whole argument fails. I recollect once of having heard a gentleman from one of the northern States, of great power and ability, announce in the House of Representatives, with imposing effect, that we of the South would be compelled, ultimately, to yield upon this subject of slavery, that it was as impossible to war successfully against a principle in politics, as it was in physics or mechanics. That the principle would ultimately prevail. That we, in maintaining slavery as it exists with us, were warring against a principle, a principle founded in nature, the principle of the equality of men. The reply I made to him was, that upon his own grounds, we should, ultimately, succeed, and that he and his associates, in this crusade against our institutions, would ultimately fail. The truth announced, that it was as impossible to war successfully against a principle in politics as it was in physics and mechanics, I admitted; but told him that it was he, and those acting with him, who were warring against a principle. They were attempting to make things equal which the Creator had made unequal.

-- Alexander H. Stephens (Vice President of the Confederate States) Cornerstone Speach

I believe the Germans bombing Pearl Harbor was the reason for the invasion of Texas, and the mass suicide of the Heaven's Gaters in the former mission. Anyone else receive a public education?

2005-05-10 04:08:00 PM
since southerners have always produced a fair and balanced account of slavery, I will just accept whatever their spokespeople offer.

2005-05-10 04:08:23 PM
With the exception of Col. Travis, I doubt very few if any of the defenders of the Alamo actually owned slaves, or could even afford to own slaves. That's not why the battle of the Alamo was fought, and I doubt the Mexican Tejanos who died defending the Alamo alongside the Americans were doing so to defend the institution of slavery.

Yeah there's one thing you will realize if you study any history at all:

No matter what region or time period you choose to look at, you will always find assholes.

It's just a timeless universal truth.

This man obviously failed American History in High School. He probably thinks the Civil War was fought because of slavery too.

The Civil War WAS fought because of slavery, just not initially. Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclimation after Antietam because keeping the South in the Union was not a strong enough cause to justify the bloodshead of the war.

Nickelodeon is a Liberalist Paradise anyway. Ren and Stimpy introduced Homosexual relationships into our culture. "You can't do that on television" made kid's the boss and got everyone addicted to green slime. "Pinwheel" was a post hypnotic suggestion to watch more Nickelodeon, got to get them when they are young. "Rugrats" is filled with AntiSemitism. "SpongeBob Squarepants" not only promotes homosexuality (SpongeBob and Patrick) but is AntiChristian in its nature going against Christian Morals and Ethics.

Nickelodeon is responsible for the dumbing down of our children, and introducing them to Liberal ideas. Now they are trying to re-write history to fit the Liberal idea of history.

Yea, not about slavery...

"My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause."
-- August 22, 1862 - Letter to Horace Greeley

Abraham Lincoln

why would anyone want to own slaves today? You have to feed them, make sure they have someplace to live, clothe them, take care of their health care, protect them from harm, and not to mention buy them in the first place. the South has learned from the North that it is much cheaper and morally superior to take recent immigrants and pay them almost nothing and when they wear out, well you just hire a new one.

why buy a slave, illegal, I mean un-documented aliens, I mean workers are almost free.

2005-05-10 04:17:13 PM
Incovenient fact: One of the reasons the Texans were so determined to win independence from Mexico in the first place was that the Mexican constitution outlawed slavery, which the Texans favored.
