Was it yellowstone or Yosemite that blew all the way to Nebraska (don't worry, this happened a looong time ago)?

2005-05-09 06:23:15 PM
"Threat" = "Impact" x "Probability"

Probability of Yellowstone eruption? Verrrry low.
Impact of Yellowstone Eruption? Extreeeemely high.

Threat ends up being significant and must be planned for, even though it's not likely to happen any time soon.

Yes it was Yellowstone.

Yellowstone and it was all the way to Missouri. but that was about 640,000 years ago, or last week if you're a creationist ;P

2005-05-09 06:45:19 PM
There was a movie called Super-Volcano about what is going to happen during the next eruption. The laughability factor was rather high due to shiatty acting.

That's the second time they raised it to high this week!

I want it to blow so the repeat submissions and approvals will stop. Well, that and the pretty sunsets. And the end of the whining about "global warming". Put on your nuclear volcanic winter parka, Mr. Environmentalist, and help me shovel the ash so I can move my car.

but that was about 640,000 years ago

[picky detail] Actually, its more like 64, 000[/picky detail]. This thing has been slated to blow for ages, and is long overdue. However, I think right now the trick is figuring out which millenia or century it'll erupt in

Isn't it interesting how we haven't had a single terror alert change since Bush was re-elected? Fear is the thing that keeps us in line.

In this case, they must be trying to scare the bears who steal those baskets with sandwiches in them.

Can I get a Yellowstone alert thingy to put on my desktop next to my Homeland Security alert thingy so I can keep an eye on all the things I should be frightened of?

/ Don't actually have the Homeland Security thingy
// Do have the Abe Vigoda extension

Okay, which one of you asshats tried to summon Bevets?
That was not a smart idea, now he will control your body and make you spew out-of context quotes for a long time. Thanks, really thanks!!

If I have any more Taco Bell today, there'll be a supervolcano in my bathroom.

Isn't this basically the same article from about 3 days ago.
I'm getting impatient.... come on asplode already

If and when the Yellowstone Big Band threatens to play Eruption, I intend to panic.

whoa. I read that as Yellow-stoner rated 'high' for eruption threat - EVERYBODY PANIC

2005-05-10 12:27:21 AM
Fark Volcanoes, I dont even believe in them, Who here has actually seen a volcano in real life? and not on T.V. or at a science fair, thats right NOBODY! They dont scare me. And if your scared by something you havent even seen your:

1. Totally brainwashed by the liberal media OR!
B. Not the brightest bulb in the kictchen drawer.

Out of the Sky no out of the Sea, faster than a speeding motorist, ITS SUPERVOLCANO!!!!

2005-05-10 12:31:17 AM
I love how the overdue crap is based on 2 intervals which isn't enough to set a pattern. Will there be some volcanic activity in Yellowstone yes, there is some there everyday is what causes the hot springs for example and an eruption, not a super eruption but a normal one is likely in the next couple hundred years. Will a supervolcano happen? Maybe. Some geologists and volcanolist think it won't but more agree that someday one will. Basicly its wait and see but I really doubt there will be one anytime in the next few thousand years.

2005-05-10 12:31:38 AM
Maybe the lava will pour down into Utah and give those pesky Mormons their long-awaited apocolypse. Then we can put a big fence around the place and use it as the United States prison.. George Carlin style.

2005-05-10 12:32:10 AM
Well, I said it the first time this was posted, and I'll say it again:

WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!

2005-05-10 12:34:54 AM
Yeah we're all gonna die if that thing blows. Oh well such is life.

2005-05-10 12:35:07 AM
Wyoming is a red state, right?

Heh.

2005-05-10 12:36:21 AM
tinrobot: Wyoming is a red state, right?

According to that badly-acted TV movie, the only part of the country unaffected would be the northeast. Woot!

2005-05-10 12:36:30 AM
Shadow_weaveR, I've actually had creationsts try to use that line on me. "The only way we know anything is through faith." So we can't teach about volcanos in southern schools? Tornados? Snow?

/ Only because someone mentioned Bevets

Rage Against the Repeat Loving Admins!

/whos with me?

Its not a question of "if", but a question of "when". According to GPS measurements the area has been rising and falling in the last few decades and it is quite seismically active. Although the last thing I read on the subject said that the analysis of the reflections from the minor earthquakes in the area show that the caldera lacks the fluidic magma necessary for an immediate eruption. Its got lots of the thick plastic-like stuff though. When it does go up it will mean the end of The United States as we know it now.

/on second thought... GO YELLOWSTONE!

2005-05-10 12:37:07 AM
And when Mt Rainier goes... man, Seattle will be so phucked!

2005-05-10 12:40:16 AM
I got your pyroclastic flow, right here.

/recycled too

Shouldn't it be called "Orangestone" with the elevated risk?

/i know, weak

2005-05-10 12:44:53 AM
This super-volcano business has been known about for ages, its strange how all these shows come out at once. It was just as likely that yellowstone would blow 10 years ago, why all the hype?

so far i've seen the Super volcano dramatisation, the scientific explanation of the dramatisation and another documentary on another network on the same topic.

/possible explanation: the US of A keeping up with its disaster stricken indo neighbours.

NBAcrazey: Shouldn't it be called "Orangestone"

Well played.
I nearly smirked a bit.

/that's a lot for me.

2005-05-10 12:47:47 AM
A volcano needs a 50% amount of "melt" in it in order to erupt, and according to geologists who study Yellowstone, this caldera doesn't have even 10%. So, it's REALLY not anytime soon. But I swear, there are more shows on for this stupid volcano than there were shows about tsunamis (and those were all the time for a while).

2005-05-10 12:48:12 AM

more of in "we're living a nightmare we can't wake up from" sense.

oh, wait. That's everyday for me...hmph

2005-05-10 12:49:29 AM
they (people at yellowstone) closed down certain areas of the park last summer as ground temps were reaching 200 degrees in areas that were never hotspots. art bell and george norry are normally total crackpots, but i believe their experts in reference to the probability of a massive eruption.

2005-05-10 12:53:49 AM
Would someone please tell the Associated Press that it's spelled "Rainier," not "Rainer"!

NBAcrazey: Shouldn't it be called "Orangestone" with the elevated risk?

Guffaw, guffaw, guffaw.

/golf clap

2005-05-10 12:55:14 AM
The only reason this is comming out now is because of that "european wet dream" of a movie that was out awile ago showing the US getting wiped out by a caldera eruption. The only "eruption" was by the europeons dreaming that we were gone.

University of Utah geology professor Robert Smith, who monitors earthquakes and volcanic activity...

Boys don't cry when Yellowstone asplodes.

Here are some great pictures of current lava flows at Kilauea. Check out the image archive too. One of the coolest places on earth, everyone should go there at least once in their life.

You see Killer Volcano.

I see Geothermo Energy Source for the next several deacades.

I mean, hey, how hard can it be to harnass it?

2005-05-10 01:16:27 AM
Step 1 - Create panic about Yellowstone supervolcano
Step 2 - ???
Step 3 - Profit?

2005-05-10 01:19:12 AM
I live by Mount Hood sort of and it's really pointy and I'm afraid that maybe if it asplode the sharp pointy top will fly off and stab me!
