D'oh! Yes, you are correct.

their jerseys were originally blue due to the otago team, which is where alot of the originals were from. it's not certain that the name 'all blacks' came from 'all backs' but thats the most common theory

Carlos when on fire is the shiat. However he is a little bit 2 inconsistent for an International test match.

Oh yeah this rugby channel thing to I will check that out Anson as I am planning on moving to the states in 6 months. Guess I will have to pluck a BS address and the good old 90210 zip code.

It will be good to see the British and Irish lions whipped so hard they go running for their saucers of milk.

That's eye sockets. And I'd like to have a chat with you. Outside. With a few of my other forward mates.

Yvonne: the name 'all blacks' came from 'all backs'

Hah! That's a good one. Our forwards thumped NZ in '04, and I thought our pack was a bit soft.

But Howlett, Muliaina, and Rokococo kicked have been kicking our ass for years (not to mention Lomu).

Dancin_In_Anson: Trying to get a HS Union started out here!

I hope you do... we had a HS Union start up when I was in high school, and it was some of the most fun I've ever had. And there seems to be plenty of competetion throughout Texas... we played a couple of tournaments around the state, like in College Station, the Jesuit tournament, etc... they always had pretty big turnouts. We would sometimes have 2-3 days of playing w/ 2-3 games played per team per day. kinda rough but always fun.

Cavemankiwi: Carlos when on fire is the shiat

Yeah, but he is past his prime now, well and truly. Makes too many mistakes, poor judgements, and is just slow around the park. He was great, and slapped us on many occasion, but he is out to pasture now.

Another anecdote - a mate of a mate of mine got stopped in Vegas by an angry, belligerent african american bouncer, because he was wearing an All-Blacks jersey. Said bouncer took it as a slight upon african-americans that anyone would *dare* to wear anything with the label "All Blacks" on it, and NOT BE BLACK (his exact words).

My mate's mate tried to explain that there was this thing called the Rugby World Cup, the third-biggest sporting event in the world after the Olympics and Soccer World Cup, and that he was being patriotic to a team that might well win said world cup. Bouncer tried to assault him, bouncer's mum intervened, mate's mate added another cross to the "Ignorant/Dumbass American " page in his diary. Never seen a page so full of crosses.

Last March I went to Vegas for a Batchelor Party Weekend Bash, Second week of March Madness, Also the weekend Ireland played Scotland to clinch the Triple Crown last year, Friday night, Steak Dinner at Prime, Spearmint Rhino till 3:00 a.m. Blackjack at Bally's to 4:30 a.m., pass out in room, buddy wakes me up at 5:30 to go see the Wales/Italy game, I tell him to Fark off, wake me up in an hour to go see the Irish. We hit the Breakfast Buffet, stumble into a cab, tell the cab driver the name of the British ex-pat pub, THe Crown and Anchor, and 15 minutes and two wrong turns later we walk into the pub, pay 20 bucks and are told it is upstairs. Upstairs turns out to be a small balcony over the main bar with a black curtain and a 21 inch color tv. My buddy and I proceed to sit with 14 other Rugby fans all from Ireland, all over 50, and proceed to watch the Irish win the Triple Crown. I think I drank three pots of cofee that morning, alternating between Guiness and water. Vegas Baby, Vegas.

That would be tough... unfortunately, you're right in the middle of the state. I wish you could get to the DFW area to play, there would be plenty of teams to play against. Luckily rugby is picking up in our area. My city had 2 different high school teams, but we did have to travel once a month to play some matches. We didn't mind at all though, b/c the roadtrips were a lot of fun.

Went to a test at Lancaster Park when Spencer first took Merts' place in the AB's. Was part of the crowd who kept the Meeeeeerrrrrrthannnnnnnss chant going the whole game.

Kinda feel ashamed of that these days. Great player, mis understood south of the Bombays.

Well, I do like sports, just have never had a huge amount of exposure to or interest in rugby. And I went into the thread to see what people we're saying as my reaction was "What is this all about?". Also, I really am confused sometimes about what gets greenlighted, not a slight to rugby, but it would seem to me that an article that 99% of users would find amusing regardless of background would be listed before a story about rugby (or any sport for that matter) that only a small percentage of users would want to read.

delau: Since when was King Los called the jackal?

Long time. From the famous terrorist/assasin of the same name (actually Iliyich Sanchez Ramirez, commonly known as Carlos The Jackal).

whos more likely to make an all blacks come back? los or lomu?

Lomu is playing club rugby again in NZ, and wants to get back up to form. It is great to see. But I think Carlos has done hs dash, and we won't see him outside UK club rugby again.

Actually, I agree - it is a rare thing to see rugby on Fark. But it does happen, and I am happy about that. Maybe one of the admins is a fan? Or maybe they are just looking for diversity and international appeal?

It sure seems to have worked - Farkers have clicked on the link 1488 times, and made 122 comments. Not the most popular on today's listings, but ahead of plenty of others.

England =/= "Lions"
The Lions is an invitational team made up of players from Britain and Ireland.

Check out the official Lions site.

We only get one match a week now from the POS Fox Soccer Channel (bastards!) but it is soooo much better than watching the NFL. Watching gridiron is akin to watching paint dry...with commercials.

I didn't get them at Tesco's OK: HS Rugby's pretty big in DFW..

Hopefully we can get some interest from kids that whose parents are stationed at Dyess AFB and have had some exposure. I am planning on running an ad in the paper to see if there might be enough interest to get a side or two up.

My headline will be :

"Rugby: A game of hooligans played by gentlemen"

Good thing this team name isn't in the US. Hell, the braintrust at Marquette University went the guttless route and decided on "Gold" rather than the "Warriors" or "Golden Eagles". What a chicken shiat way out you hosers.

Ah,.. I was there a few weeks ago for the Chelsea v. Arsenal game. Bunch o' drunk chelsea headhunters wanting to break my neck as I had on the arsenal shirt.

On another note: anyone try the EA Sports Rugby game?
Been wanting to buy it, just not sure if it is playable.

ImaJerk: anyone try the EA Sports Rugby game

Yeah, I had it for PS2 a couple of years ago. It's no bad, worth the cost second-hand, but the engine did not match up to the NFL titles even then. Maybe a more recent version would be better.

ImaJerk

EA Rugby 2005 is easily the best EA rugby game out yet. While its still not perfect, its way better than the previous titles.

My flat has been playing it straight for about a month now.

There is only one rugby game that is better. Jonah Lomu Rugby for the PS1 which came out in 95 or 96.

YEAH!

"Spencer was on his way out anyway. He is older and slower, and everyone has figured out that if you pressure the pack, he is just not effective. He scrambles, doesn't have time to operate, and can't execute. He was overcome by the Wallabies in the last test series when they put pressure on the forwards (NZ lost 18-23 in the last test he played in)."

by the time i got to the end of that paragraph i was 100% sure you were an aussie ;)

p.s. the 'tahs season is gonna all come to nothing.

Carlos is inconsistent. This is not a new development, it's just been more apparent in recent years. Every time he gets a run in a Black jersey, he duffs it. I won't miss him. I'll miss Mehrts though, but Carter looks like a more than capable (if unnecessarily pretty) replacement.

Canes or Crusaders to win the Super 12. Preferably Canes :)

Goddamn it! I missed a rugby disscussion thread!

And-1:

Oh, yes. The World Cup win was close, and I am not sure whether they deserved it or not. I was at the game, and the whole stadium knew it was coming, but no-one could stop it. So from that perspective, well, they played their game and beat us. Meh.

Hey, I was there too! You'd probably be somewhere in the crowd in some pictures of mine. It's a small world....

2005-05-10 09:04:33 AM
A lot of complaits about this article appearing I see - but what you have to realise is that this is an international site (not just American) and a rugby article is a hell of a lot more interesting internationally than ANY US college sport and indeed the majority of US pro sports.

2005-05-10 12:29:37 PM
How come the rest of the world doesn't feel the need to make stupid comments anytime an article is green lit about something pointless happening in a stupid american sport? No else plays your silly little games but we have the decency to remain polite about them or at least not comment at all.
