I have an idea! How about BOTH! Take away the phone and ground them. That will accomplish what grounding alone used to do - isolating the kid.

This article will indeed be useful for us TFers that have teenagers that live in South Korea!

I've always preferred a good healthy beating myself. It makes them fear you and burns calories.

nm: Wait, why do kid's need cell phones again?

Well, I hear they're taking payphones out of a lot of places, so the days where you could walk to practically any corner and find a payphone in the event of an emergency are gone. I think it's asinine that they've removed so many of them, but then again, since most of them are probably losing money now, they're probably gone for good unless the government decides to get into the payphone business.

Given that, and the fact that since Columbine most parents are really paranoid about not having a way to contact their kids in the event such a thing were to happen at their school, and it's easy to see why so many parents view cellphones for their kids as a necessity.

Having said that, I plan to require my kids to get jobs and pay for their own damn phones if they want them.

I've used a payphone maybe 3 times in my life, none of which were emergencies.
Parents are either far too damn paranoid and/or children are far too spoiled.

That is the exact plan my wife and I have for when we're parents. Same goes for a car; they pay for it, the gas, and the insurance.

shove the phone up their damn asses! thats what I say - this country's gone straight down the crapper ever since we started getting away from forcible anal sodomy as an effective punishment of those bratty ass kids

/its not queer, its just good, common sense parenting

From what I know, all cell phones are enabled to dial 911 whether or not they have a calling plan.

That being said, the correct question is:
Why do kids need cell phones with every imaginable extra service attached to them? Picture mail, video mail, IM programs, text messaging, 40 different ringtones, 20 different screen savers....damn kids.

2005-05-07 05:10:33 PM
Here's a top ten list of things you can do to punish your kid:
1) threaten them with a night at the neverland ranch,
2) fry up thier pet rabbit and serve it to them, only tell them what they've eaten when thier finished,
3) sign them up to the Marines without thier knowledge,
4) play hip-hop until thier ears bleed,
5) Macy Gray, do I need to say more?
6) drop the little wiggers off in Compton, yell "negro" while driving away,
7) Laxative in thier slurpees,
8) Lose thier dog, permanently;
9) Show them pictures of their mommy naked, when she was a crack-whore,
10) Get them hooked on heroin, then withhold the drug.

If I were a parent:

House rule, no phones except rotary dial. When I was your age we had to yell at the CO with a megaphone to signal the operator, because the magneto was broken and the phone man didn't like us...but finally the operator got sick of us too. Then we got an "I Love Lucy" phone after Mr. Strowger's big novel idea of pulse dialing by dial caught on...AND WE LIKED IT.

/Born in the Touchtone Age, but well before the commoditization of cellular.

yes i am on of the hs kids who cannot live w.o a cell. as a matter of fact im on it right now, while sitting in front of the computer and the TV. that said, if my parents took away my phone id prob quit school or something.

kids don't need cell phones, or bikes, or rides to their friends' houses, or nice looking clothes or a computer, or many other things. but why shouldn't they have them? who pays for it is something to work out with the kid, but as long as someone isn't abusing something let them have it. if it can enrich their activity, fun, social lives, schoolwork, etc. i see no reason why they shouldn't have it. too many of you think your kids should grow up exactly as you did, but the world is different now.

that said, why do so many high school kids look like complete tools on the phone when i see them out in public? quit being tools!

What a coincidence, I'm one of those parents that give kids things like cell-phones so I can take them away. My kid was failing three classes, so I bought her a puppy. Now, if she doesn't do her homework, she looses puppy-time. Grounding her for an entire evening is horrible to her, and quite fun for me. I may give her a cell-phone also, just for kicks. Then I'll be able to audit her phone calls, and even track her little ass with the built-in gps!

You would think that would work well in teaching your kids to be responsible with money; however, in my experience when parents refuse to pay for gas, car, phone, clothes, everything to force their kids to get a job, they end up valuing the money more than they do their school work. In the long run that doesn't help them.

i think cell phones are amazing. I dont know what i would do without it. Im 19 and im in college, the real reason why i like it is taht it keeps my numbers. the thinig i dont get is why do 13-15 year olds need cells? i didnt really start using my cell untell i got to college where im not near a phone often. It is good to keep in touch with projects and stuff. But i can live without it. Kids should not have cell phones untell they at least have a car. This is when they will be away from a house more often. before they get a car, if the parents cant get ahold of the kid, they are crappy parents and need to pull the leash tighter.

I saw a car full of high school girls at a red light last night. One in the front seat with a camera phone taking pictures of two in the back. The two in the back looked at the picture and giggled incessantly. One of the girls in the backseat took a picure of one in the front. She giggled incessantly. This went on and on until the light turned green, and I presume it continued long after that. I would love to see one of these girls throw a teary eyed shiatfit as her father smashed that thing.

What is wrong with limiting communications between people? I can't believe how many people here say,"I haven't found a use for a cell phone yet ha ha ha". Just because you can't possibly fathom how nice it is to get in touch with people while on the run and out of the house, or spontaneously changing plans etc doesn't mean people shouldn't have them. We grow more social it seems with each passing generation. Don't like to be in touch with people? Fine, unplug and hangup, you neoluddites.

if her grades continue to slip just send me the puppy and i will email her pictures of me eating it. that should teach her and satisfy my puppy-hunger.

Kids should not have cell phones until they at least have a car.

This I agree with. I didn't have my own cell, but whenever I was driving I would take my mom's. Pretty much all of the calls I made were of the "My alternator belt's gone" or "Do you want anything else while I'm at the store?". Cells have their place, but that young I don't see too much reason for them to have their own.

// What was the topic again?

Keep in mind, this article is about Korea. They (and most of the Asian countries) never really had good land lines, especially outside of major cities, so adding very robust and widespread wireless networks was a comparatively easy option, once it became available. The penetration of cellphones, pagers, and the like is astonishingly widespread compared to the US.

Not that this has anything to do with grounding kids, but it does give some context as to why it'd actually be considered a real punishment.

Can you spank me now?

2005-05-07 06:10:50 PM
There's only three words for real punishment:

"Cayenne Pepper" "Underwear"

2005-05-07 06:16:35 PM
Yeah... you want your kids that WALK TO SCHOOL to not have a cellphone?

lets see, 30 minutes to school, 30 minutes to home plus most of the year. . . equals rape/kidnapping/assault/accdent/stroke I mean come on?

I'd argue they need them less once they have a car.

/Simple solution, buy a cheepass 711 phone with 30 minutes or something, if they want more minutes they can buy it, whether activated or not they can call 911. K.I.S.S.

2005-05-07 06:22:06 PM
In the 7th and 8th grade video editing class I teach, I gave a quiz. Some of the kids whipped out their cellphones and started texting other classmates for answers.
....However, none of them were smart enough to set the ringer or keypad to silent.

See? They're dumb. And *really* fun to punish.

2005-05-07 06:22:43 PM
My child will have a cell phone when she turns 30 and decides to buy one on her own. Or... maybe she won't, since I will have thoroughly brainwashed her by then.

2005-05-07 06:23:42 PM

i bet youre the type who went and bought duct tape and plastic sheeting after 9/11 also...

You friggin moron, I live in a city.

I bet your the type that voted repuglican after 9/11.

/Can't believe people would let their kids walk home alone with no form of protection.
//Assuming there's at least some distance between the school and the home.

I think in a way it's good that a kid has a cell phone. It means he or she has friends.

2005-05-07 06:45:02 PM
wait, they allow cell phones in high school now?

when i was in highschool 'beepers' were all the rage, and they were confiscated on sight by the teachers & principals...

/starting to feel old

2005-05-07 06:45:25 PM
"I'm ganna give you something to really cry about."

That was my mom's favorite saying.

Survived many beatings and grew up just fine.
