Everquest is lame. Progress Quest is much more fun.

Damnit, no stores in Edinburgh participating...
I remember last year, Forbidden Planet took part but didn't advertise anything about it, I had to ask at the counter...

2005-05-07 11:02:49 AM
EQ old and busted
WoW new hotness

Bad timing, May is National Masturbation Month.

*fap fap fap*

2005-05-07 11:11:31 AM
I dunno, I play WoW. EQ sucks.

2005-05-07 11:24:21 AM
And Im stuck at work all day. Oh well, maybe next year...

WoW = wow!

WoW sucks. If I want PvP, there's a hell of a lot better games out there. If I want to kill monsters and do quests, there are a hell of a lot better games out there.

Sure it's a nice mix of the two, but it does neither play style much justice.

2005-05-07 11:34:39 AM
My store is participating, but I somehow got the day off, go me.

2005-05-07 11:35:03 AM
WoW sucks bad, same stuff except less of it and a different shiny exterior.

Not that I play EQ or anything!

I work at a small comic book store in Charlotte NC. (Rebel Base Comics and Toys) The free books (the retailer actually pays for them) are really good and the majority of the kids who come in would never read a comic / book any other way. the program has been a huge success (in my area anyway). any Charlotte area farkers are more than welcome to stop by.

did someone say free comic book day?

2005-05-07 11:39:13 AM
Comics = waste of time and money.

2005-05-07 11:41:23 AM
Too bad I'm 200 miles or so away from the nearest good comic store.

2005-05-07 11:44:22 AM
I always feel bad taking advantage of FCBD. I don't have the time nor the money to take on a hobby like comics, so I feel like they could serve someone else better. I had a decent pile last year and actually read through most of them but now they're all rotting in the trash somewhere. I don't imagine the creators of said books would take too kindly to their work fertilizing a dump somewhere in southeast Wisconsin. Though maybe they take enough pleasure in knowing that someone actually took the time to read their work to make up for the fact that it's in the trash now? Anyone have some insights that will help me decide whether or not it's worth it to take advantage of this?

Lunchbox-eB, that's fine, then the next civilization can enjoy them too.

The way the place I work at is doing it, is pretty cool actually. We're giving away 2 of the new books, and 2 random back issue books.

FREE COMIC BOOKS?!?!

I don't even read comics, but if it's free, I'm there!

2005-05-07 11:58:12 AM
It's the perfect last minute Mother's Day gift.

2005-05-07 12:01:07 PM
okay, seriously, what's the deal? are these stores giving out some sort of pre-approved package or whatever they throw together?

/nearest shop's an hour away, I'm only forcing my shatty car there if it's worth it

2005-05-07 12:01:44 PM
The point of handing out free comics... okay, well there's multiple ones.

--people get exposure to comics, for free. Kid friendly and not kid friendly. A good store will make the place welcoming and try to make it a fun day for people. It's, at its best, a PR day to make the role of a comic shop in a community BETTER instead of the famed cliche.

--A chance to try out something from a genre or a company you've never read. If you find something interesting, maybe you'll come back for more things like it. If you don't, hey, at least we try to reach out to you.

--If you come and get something and throw it out later... that's fine. At least you came and looked, and hopefully read it. If you got some enjoyment out of it, awesome. Otherwise, the stuff's recyclable so nobody is gonna weep.

As for the guy that said comics are a waste of time and money: MAUS, Road to Perdition, Barefoot Gen, Rex Mundi, Strangers in Paradise, Supreme Power, Sin City, 300 (also Frank Miller; a retelling of the battle at Thermopyle), Batman: The Long Halloween, Sandman, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, From Hell, Global Frequency.

This is just a sample of things I recommend to people who come into the store I work at and want something meaty, something they can enjoy, something fun or classic, something well-written, something they could learn from.

Not all comics are trash. A lot can be.

Come by a store and at least pick up Owly and the Flight freebies.

2005-05-07 12:03:54 PM
m053486 - Each comic publishing company that participates sends out boxes of free comics, almost always specifically printed for FCBD, to participating stores. The stores have the option to pick and choose which free comics they'll be handing out. Not all stores will have every free comic that's listed on the Diamond website.

Everquest is so five minutes ago, now its World of Warcraft.

2005-05-07 12:30:04 PM
Wait, can we talk about WOW some more? I think I am addicted.

2005-05-07 12:45:47 PM
as a Nerd, I feel insulted to be lumped in with the Everquest crowd.

2005-05-07 12:49:21 PM
City of Heroes is better!

don't give in to the hype of WoW!

(who wants to be a farking miner for five hours a day anyways? what a waste of my time!)

2005-05-07 12:52:05 PM
Apparently there's a bonus for those of us who are comic book and CMG(collectible miniature game) nerds.

Every store that's participating in FCBD is giving away one Icons Batman Heroclix to each customer. Not that it matters to the WoW and everquest crowd.

2005-05-07 12:56:15 PM
already got mine, as well as 20 dollars worth of my monthly comics

2005-05-07 12:56:17 PM
Really, if you've never read Watchmen and/or the Dark Knight Returns, I honestly don't care HOW big a waste you feel my comic hobby is.

/I've said it before and I'll say it again: "I read comics. It's a hobby. You spend years of your life memorizing sports stats, painting your face different colors to go out into public, and wearing foam cheese on your head. You're a bigger geek than I am."

We at the Lineage 2 MMO are still laughing at all the hype given to WoW over the years building up to its release, and it turns out to be a real PoS.

2005-05-07 01:08:08 PM
I need to hit the comic store before I go to work today...hmmm...

Bagu

We at the Lineage 2 MMO are still laughing at all the hype given to WoW over the years building up to its release, and it turns out to be a real PoS.

When you say "we" that implies that there are actually more than 2 people that play.....

Tribs

Wait, this is happening in the UK too?

shiat. It's already 6.15. And I don't think there are any comic book shops in Wakefield either.

Oh well...maybe next year.

2005-05-07 01:17:51 PM
I was actually gonna go today, but the store I was gonna go to isn't having it til Wednesday. So now I'm not sure I'm gonna get a chance, bah.

2005-05-07 01:22:57 PM
they were giving only one per customer.

I picked up Roninhood .. I should have gotten something else.

2005-05-07 01:27:03 PM
Yar. Each store does it differently. Some stores only let you have one, others have buckets. We're going to be letting people take one each of whatever ones they want.

(Not in to work for another couple of hours)

2005-05-07 01:27:50 PM
It's Everquest II, Dork.

2005-05-07 01:41:27 PM
Heh...WoW is doing better than any MMOG in the past few years, and with good reason, it is currently the best game on the market...
